Average Cubans live afraid of trying to protest
The Cuban Criminal Code states that participants in public meetings or demonstrations can be punished with a fine of up to $100 fees or one to three months imprisonent. Instead, people are supposed to file their complaints with relevant government entities. The government says that in order to organize a protest, the government must be notified in advance, but has prevented dissidents from doing so. Cubans live with a great fear of ending up behind bars if they express their dissatisfaction. http://www.HavanaSpring.com The Story of Free Cuba powered by WebStringers [00:00:00,285] Asking average Cubans if they have the right to strike is causing reactions ranging from surprise or denial to frank expressions of fear. One summarizes all: Reforms can not be demanded because, as the following report points out, people live in great fear. The right to strike or public demonstration is a controversial issue in Cuba. In this regard, the population thinks: -To make a strike in Cuba, that is to create discord and... Get surrounded by cops. [00:00:31,281] -Can you go to an office, sign a paper, and protest on the street? -No. -No, protests are not allowed. The Cuban Penal Code stipulates that participants in meetings or protests shall be punished by deprivation of liberty from 1 to 3 months, or a fine up to 100 fees. -The Cuban lives scared. Normally in the island it is established that in case of complaints or dissents of people, they must go to the relevant institutions like Citizen's Advice Service. [00:01:04,454] -If you come out here to demonstrate for example because of water itself, because of a leak, police catches you, they get you inside the car and you disappear. Those who organize a public demonstration may be punished by 1 year in jail. The Camagüey dissident Indomar Gómez said: -We have tried to strike and they always prevent it. They always prevent it. They do not allow that here. [00:01:30,766] - Who did not allow that? -The government, the political police. The authorities have claimed that to hold a protest they must be notified first. -How can the government say that without documents and...? -The government just says it, but that can not be done here. If you do it you are put in jail. In August 1994, people from the Capital came out to the streets to protest because of the economic and political crisis the country was facing. But they were suppressed by government forces. [00:02:00,623] -Do you think that at some point people will got out to protest for something? -I think so. -Yes. -I think so because we have already lived a dictatorship for about 50 years, and I think so. It's not like before, now people talk wherever they want. People have already lost that fear. As you see, it is still alive the hope that, like in almost any other country in the world, in Cuba will also be exercised the right to strike without fear to end up behind bars. Neil Rogers Show (May 10, 1995)
Neil Rogers is getting serious today. The Cuban community is upset because Clinton did not allow 13 rafters rescued by a cruise ship in the Caribbean to enter the U.S. The protesters have been blocking roadways in the Miami area, like traffic is not bad enough. Today starts with a crossover with Rick and Suds. --- Visit http://neilrogers.org to learn more about the NEIL ROGERS Audio restoration project. 1,600+ shows recovered so far.
