Cultural Festivals in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a country having a glorious history of over 2500 years; therefore, a strong cultural and religious influence can be seen in the society. Even Sri Lanka's festivals are based on religion or the culture or astrological things. Both Buddhists and Hindus follow the same calendar. It is the Solar & Lunar calendar while Buddhists alone follow the Buddhist own calendar for the religious events. All Buddhists' religious events are held according to the Buddhist calendar which starts really from the month of 'Bak' which is the month of April. Each month has a full moon poya day in Sri Lanka, which are a public, bank and mercantile holiday. It is better for you to be in the knowledge that all types of Liquor shops, Bars are closed in Sri Lanka. According to the Buddhist calendar the months are named as follows : January -- Duruthu, February-Navam,March-Medin,April-Bak, May-Vesak, June- Poson,July-Esela,August- Nikini, September- Binara, October- Vap,November- Il,December-Uduwap.
Most of Sri Lanka's events and festivals feature the items that represent diversity exist within the society from one area to another area which also bring a dynamic nature to the events and festivals. Those events are normally very colorful and representing the glory of the prestigious history of the Sri Lanka. The following are some of the main events and festivals that are taken place starting from January of the year.
