Hargus Pig Robbins - Unbreakable Hearts
Hargus Pig Robbins - Unbreakable Hearts
Hargus was mostly a session pianist, rarely cutting his own singles. This was one of the hardest singles I've looked for over the years and one of my favorite country songs from the late 70s

This year, Pig is being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame for his many many years of being a fine session pianist. While he wasn't as well known for being a singer, he did land 2 singles on the country charts in 1979, this being the first and highest, reaching #83.

The Piano Players in Modern Country Music ~ 1959 - 1990 (1/2): Hargus "Pig" Robbins on Piano
The Piano Players in Modern Country Music ~ 1959 - 1990 (1/2) For decades, pianos have been an integral part of the country music sound. When available, pianos were part of rural string bands performing for dances. Its percussive rhythms made the dance beat more definable. One early country piano recording was done in 1927, when Virginia's Shelor Family String Band was recorded by Ralph Peer at the legendary Bristol Sessions. However, many early country performers thought little of using the piano. Charlie Poole was once ejected from a recording session when he wanted to use one; his New York producers felt it wasn't country- sounding. But this was not the case with early Grand Ole Opry star Sam McGee, who learned some of his instrumentals from a player piano roll. When a young Bob Wills was playing fiddle for dances in Texas, pianos were a common part of the accompaniment. After Milton Brown left the Light Crust Doughboys to form his Musical Brownies (1932), he hired a jazz pianist named Fred "Papa" Calhoun, the first pianist in western swing. When Bob Wills started the Playboys (1933), he went through several pianists before he found Al Stricklin. The western swing scene in Texas spawned other pianists, including Moon Mullican, who worked with Cliff Bruner and the crazed, stomping, pot-smoking singer-pianist John, "Smokey" Wood, who worked with The Modern Mountaineers and his own band, Smokey Wood and His Wood Chips. On the West Coast in the 1940s, pianists were a <b>...</b>

Dene-Yensieian Workshop 2012, Kari and Hargus
"Two Topics for Dene-Yeniseian Comparison: Geographic Lexicon and the Incorporate Slot" James Kari (ANLC, UAF) and Sharon Hargus (University of Washington) Dene-Yeniseian Workshop, March 24, 2012 Place names, geographic and directional terms are a rich area for future research on Dene-Yeniseian. Kari will outline some ideas about the distribution of the earliest Athabascan bands in central and Western Alaska. Several hydronyms in Alaska signal the initial spreads of early Athabascan bands. The incorporate slot in Yeniseian and Na-Dene is an intriguing topic for DY comparison. As noted in Vajda 2010 (p. 55, fn 28) it seems likely that an incorporate noun stem 'mind, thought' is cognate in Athabascan-Eyak and in Yeniseian. Hargus will summarize some incorporate slot inventories (Koyukon, Babine-Witsuwit'en). While most Northern Athabascan incorporates are shared, there are some exotic items, perhaps found in only one language: eg Inland Dena'ina ni'ats'ezdu 'we dual sit night bear hunting', where the incorporate 'a appears nowhere else but in a couple of verb themes that refer to night bear hunting.
