5.5 How sample size is determined
5.5 How sample size is determined
The sample size for any study depends on the required precision; the size and nature of the population under study. Procedural aspects such as time, budget and resources available will dictate the size, as will publishing aspects, in terms of importance placed on the results by the audience. The main ways of deciding on sample size are: by calculation; by using accepted industry standards; by budget (time or money available); by building analysis cells. The calculation method takes account of the population size and the expected accuracy of results. In theory, this is the best way to arrive at a sample size; in practice, other methods are used. Many sample sizes for research studies are decided on the basis of what is feasible within time or money available. The sample size is often built up from the minimum numbers expected in each analysis cell. www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk

TEDxDavis-Lloyd Knox-A Sample Size of One
TEDxDavis-Lloyd Knox-A Sample Size of One
In this personal talk, Professor Knox charts his career as a cosmologist. From his early beginnings as a curious child, to his success, disillusionment, and eventual rediscovery of his passion; he uses his story to encourage people to fight the fear of failure, and pursue their dreams despite what others might say. Lloyd Knox is UC Davis Physics Professor who joined the faculty in 2001. In his reseach, Professor Knox uses the cosmos as a laboratory for studying our origins and the fundamental laws of nature. He has motivated significant observational projects (including two satellites), brought to his field now-standard data analysis tools, had the most precise determination of the age of the Universe, contributed to the establishment of the ``Lambda CDM" cosmological paradigm, quantitatively predicted and then detected the clustering properties of the far-infrared background, and advised federal funding agencies how to support research in dark energy via his service on the Dark Energy Task Force. His current work is focused on interpretation of data from the Planck satellite and the South Pole Telescope. AboutTEDx, x=independently organize event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x <b>...</b>

Sample Size Calculator in Excel for Variable and Attribute Data
To calculate a sample size you need to know: 1. The confidence level required (90%, 95%, 99%) 2. The desired width of the confidence interval (+5%) 3. The variability of the characteristic (eg, mean) The QI Macros Sample Size Calculator is designed to work with both variable (measured) and attribute (counted) data. C1: WHAT IS STATISTICS?
C1: WHAT IS STATISTICS?
WHAT IS STATISTICS? o The mathematics of the collection, organization, and interpretation of numerical data, especially the analysis of population characteristics by inference from sampling o The subject of statistics can be divided into descriptive statistics - describing data, and inferential Statistics - drawing conclusions from data (Source: dictionary.com) WHY SHOULD WE STUDY STATISTICS? Descriptive Statistics : To describe a phenomenon o Summary and presentation of data Inferential Statistics: To draw conclusions o Making statements or predictions about the population based on statistical information POPULATION & SAMPLE POPULATION: is the group of all objects or individuals of interest. o All York Students o Canadians SAMPLE: is a subset of the population o 40 York students chosen at random o People interviewed for the latest election poll o We refer to the individual components of a sample as "observations" PARAMETERS AND STATISTICS Very generally we can say that: o Populations are described by PARAMETERS o Samples are described by STATISTICS For example: Parameter: the average hair length of all domestic cats (reflects the true value for the population) Statistic: the average hair length of cats in my sample (it's an estimate) Statistical inference: is the process of drawing a conclusion about the population based on the sample (with certain levels of confidence and significance) FINAL DEFINITIONS A variable is a characteristic of a population or sample. o student <b>...</b>
