Thousands of devotees lined the streets leading to the Hong San Si Temple in Teluk Pulai, awaiting the arrival of the Emperor Gods via the Klang River. This is the eve of the 9 day Vegetarian Festival to celebrate the birthday of the nine Emperor Gods which falls on the 9th day of the 9th Lunar Month of the Chinese Calendar. Earlier, at the temple grounds, there was an elaborate ceremony to raise the Yellow Lantern which signifies the beginning of the Festival. The devotees then proceeded to the Klang River to receive the Gods and to escort the Gods back to the temple to start the Festival. Devotees and visitors will be treated nightly to Taiwanese (Minaan) Opera and various Taoist rituals which include crossing bridges of blades, firewalking , healing and fortune telling sessions, prayers and a grand spread of Vegetarian food. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival ends on the 16th Oct 2010 which coincides with the 9th day of the 9th Lunar month.

This video features the Taoist ritual of walking over a pit of burning charcoal. Generally strict rules and specifications apply as to the materials used, the praying rituals to start the fire and also rules as to who can perform this fire walking. Ladies and minors are not alllowed to perform this ritual. Only those devotees who have followed the nine day vegetarian diet are allowed. Those born in the Year of the Tiger and Monkey have to carry specially prepared amulets or talisman. This video is taken on the 7th day of the 9th Lunar month at the Hong San Si Temple in Teluk Pulai, Klang during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

The Sungai Way Leng Eng Tian Temple sits on top of a hill and commands a grand view of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. On the 5th day of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival 2010, devotees and worshippers are blessed in these Taoist rituals which dates back some thousands of years. The highlight of the evening are crossing the 108 blade bridge by the mediums and the blessing for all those who walk across the heavenly bridge. As usual healing and fortune telling sessions are also held in the later part of the night by the temple mediums.
