Ali & Gipp

Ali & Gipp was a rap duo which consisted of Ali (born Ali Jones in St. Louis, Missouri) of the St. Lunatics, and Big Gipp (born Cameron Gipp in Atlanta, Georgia) of Goodie Mob. They first appeared together on the single Grillz, by Nelly and Paul Wall. They have recently released their collaborative new album Kinfolk which was originally supposed to be released on July 15, but was pushed back to be released on August 14 of 2007.

Ali

Ali ibn Abi Talib (/ˈɑːli, ɑːˈliː/;Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب‎, translit. ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕaliː bɪn ʔabiː t̪ˤaːlɪb]; 13 Rajab, 21 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH; 15 September 601 – 29 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic caliphate from 656 to 661.

Born to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Ali was the only person born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam, as many sources, especially Shia ones say. Ali was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Medina, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatimah. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community. He was appointed caliph by Muhammad's Companions (Sahaba) in 656, after caliph Uthman ibn Affan was assassinated. Ali's reign saw civil unrest and in 661, he was attacked and assassinated by a Kharijite while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, dying two days later.

Big Gipp

Big Gipp (born Cameron Gipp; April 28, 1973) is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known as a member of Goodie Mob, and has also released one solo album and been part of several collaborations, most recently with Ali as Ali & Gipp.

Background

Big Gipp, who is a Southern rapper, hails from the hotbed of the genre, Atlanta, Georgia. Gipp is known for his slow, drawn-out rapping dialect with political and street-life themed lyrics. The public first heard him rap on OutKast's first album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, on the song Git Up, Git Out.

Goodie Mob

He later rose to prominence as one-fourth of the Dungeon Family-affiliated group Goodie Mob along with Cee-Lo, T-Mo, and Khujo. The group released four albums to critical and commercial success. After a brief stint away from Goodie Mob, he rejoined the group along with Cee-Lo to reconstruct the once estranged quartet. They are currently in the studio planning to release a new album.

Ali & Gipp

Big Gipp has released a collaborative effort with one of St. Lunatics's, Ali. The album is called Kinfolk. A single and accompanying music video ("Go Head") were released on July 31, 2007.

Universal Records (defunct record label)

Universal Records was a record label owned by Universal Music Group and operated as part of the Universal Motown Republic Group. The label has been dormant since 2005, due to Universal Motown and Universal Republic Records being formed and taking all of the artists from the label.

History

Founded in 1995 as Rising Tide Records, the label would ultimately begin to thrive the following year when its name was changed to Universal Records to complement the branding overhaul of the Universal Studios structure since MCA Inc. was purchased from Matsushita Electric by The Seagram Company Ltd.. The label, which is actually the second incarnation (the first one was a short-lived underground imprint of MCA Records that existed from 1988 to 1989) was created by former Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris (who now heads Sony Music Entertainment) and Daniel Glass, who became its president.

Universal Records had success in breaking new artists, including the multi-platinum debut of Erykah Badu, Billie Myers, Goldfinger, Akon and the Lost Boyz. Glass formed relationships with independent record labels as Kedar Entertainment and Mojo Records.

Universal Music Group, Inc. (legally known as UMG Recordings, Inc., abbreviated as UMG) is an American-French worldwide music corporation that operates as a subsidiary of Paris-based French media conglomerate Vivendi. It claims to be the largest music corporation in the world. UMG also owns Universal Music Publishing Group, which is cited as the second largest music publishing company in the world. History

Early history

Universal Music was once the music company attached to film studio Universal Pictures. Its origins go back to the formation of the American branch of Decca Records in 1934. The Decca Record Co. Ltd. of England spun American Decca off in 1939.MCA Inc. merged with American Decca in 1962. The present organization was formed when its parent company Seagram purchased PolyGram in May 1998 and merged it with Universal Music Group in early 1999. However, the name had first appeared in 1996 when MCA Music Entertainment Group was renamed Universal Music Group. The PolyGram acquisition included Deutsche Grammophon which traces its ancestry to Berliner Gramophone making Deutsche Grammophon UMG's oldest unit. UMG's Canadian unit traces its ancestry to a Berliner Gramophone breakaway firm the Compo Company.
