Kilukkam (
Jingle) is a
1991 blockbuster
Malayalam film written by
Venu Nagavalli and directed by
Priyadarshan. This movie revolves around Nandini (
Revathi), an orphan who comes to
Ooty in search of her father. This film is considered as the biggest hit in the history of Malayalam film industry, along with
Chithram (1988).
Following the success of this movie, it was remade in
Bollywood as
Muskurahat. In 2006, the sequel to this movie
Kilukkam Kilukilukkam was also released but it could not repeat the success of its predecessor.
Plot synopsis
Nandini (
Revathy), is an illegitimate child who comes to Ooty, in search of her father who is a retired chief justice of supreme court. She finds Joji (
Mohanlal), a tourist guide and acts as though she is mad and takes shelter in his home. Eventually she reveals her true identity and they slowly begin to fall in love. Other parallel threads includes the life of Joji and
Nischal (
Jagathy Sreekumar) and also that of
Kittunni (
Innocent) who leads a miserable and frustrated life as a servant.
Reception
The movie was a huge success at the box office. Now the film is quite widely regarded as one of the greatest comedy films made in Malayalam and as a
comedy classic. Some critics credits
Jagathy Sreekumar for the film's incomparable comedy scenes. The scenes in which Nischal (
Jagathy Sreekumar) lands up in hospital several times and Kittunni's (
Innocent Vincent) farewell to his master (
Thilakan) are still widely sought by audience in television phone-in shows.
Kilukkam made many records in the box-office. This is the first film celebrated 100 days in 10 theaters in Kerala. Kilukkam was the first film to collect more than Rs.2 crore from the releasing centres alone, and when it finished its run, gross collection was more than Rs.5 crores. It is considered as the biggest malayalam hit along with chithram(1988). It is one of the 4 record grossers from Mohanlal-Priyadarsan combo. Other three are thalavattam, chithram and chandralekha.
