He is noted for films like Daag (1952), Patita (1953), and Seema (1955) for which he won the 4th Filmfare Award for Best Story. Chakravarty is also credited along with Devika Rani for discovering Dilip Kumar, whom he gave his first break in 1944 film Jwar Bhata (1944 film).Chakravarty also produced and directed Daag (1952 film) in 1952 for which Dilip Kumar won his first ever Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
He was married to Saraswati Shastri aka Kamala, younger sister of Lakshmi Shankar (née Shastri) wife of Rajendra Shankar, elder brother of Sitar maestro, Ravi Shankar.
Balraj Sahni (1 May 1913 – 13 April 1973), born Yudhishthir Sahni, was a noted Indian film and stage actor, who is best known for Dharti Ke Lal (1946), Do Bigha Zameen (1953), Kabuliwala (1961) and Garam Hawa (1973).
He came from Bhera, now in Punjab, Pakistan, and was the brother of Bhisham Sahni, noted Hindi writer, playwright, and actor.
Sahni went from his native Rawalpindi to study at Lahore University. He completed his Master's degree in English Literature from Lahore and then went back to Rawalpindi and joined his family business. He also held a Bachelor's degree in Hindi, followed by a Masters in English from Punjab University. Soon after, he married Damayanti Sahni.
In the late 1930s, Sahni and his wife left Rawalpindi to join Tagore's Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan in Bengal as an English and Hindi teacher. It is here that their son, Parikshit Sahni was born, when his wife Damayanti was doing her Bachelor's degree. He also went to work with Mahatma Gandhi for a year in 1938. The next year, Sahni, with Gandhi's blessings, went to England to join the BBC-London's Hindi service as a radio announcer. He returned to India in 1943.
Shubha Khote (born 1940) is an Indian film and television actress. She is the older sister of actor Viju Khote.
Shubha Khote studied at St. Teresa's High School, Girgaum, Mumbai and then graduated in English Literature from Wilson College. Her father Nandu Khote was a stage actor, and had also acted in the silent movies. Her aunt, Durga Khote, was also a well-known actress. Her daughter, Bhavana Balsavar is also a TV actress.
She made her stage debut as child actor at age 4. Shubha Khote made her film debut in Seema (1955) as Putli. This role came to her since she was a good cyclist and her cycling attracted the 'Seema's team for her selection. Since then, she has starred in a large number of Hindi and Marathi movies, stage shows and TV serials. She was mostly starred opposite Mehmood and the pair became hit in 'Sasural', 'Bharosa', 'Ziddi', 'Chhoti Behan', 'Sanjh Aur Savera', 'Love in Tokyo', 'Grahasthi', 'Humrahi', 'Beti Bete'. She also played negative roles in 'Paying Guest' and 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye'. In 1962, at the 9th Filmfare Awards, she received two nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for Gharana and Sasural, though lost to Nirupa Roy.
Anita Guha (Bengali; 1932 – 20 June 2007) was an Indian Bengali actress who usually played mythological characters in films. She became known for playing the title role in Jai Santoshi Maa (1975). Previously, she had played Sita in other mythological films Sampoorna Ramayana (1961), Shree Ram Bharat Milap (1965) and, Tulsi Vivah (1971). Besides this, she also played notable roles in films like Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), Purnima (1965), Pyar Ki Rahen (1959), Gateway of India (1957), Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) and Sanjog (1961).
She came to Mumbai in the 1950s as a beauty pageant contestant, when she was 15 years old. She became an actress there and made her film debut in Tangewali (1955). She moved onto hit films like "Dekh Kabira Roya" (1957), Sharada (1957), and, for which she earned her only Filmfare nomination of her career as Best Supporting Actress. In 1961, she appeared as Sita, in Babubhai Mistry's Sampoorna Ramayana, which made her a household name.
But it was her title role in Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) that brought her the most fame. She had never even heard of goddess Santoshi until she was offered the role, as this was a little-known goddess. It was only a guest appearance, and her scenes were shot 10–12 days. She fasted during the shooting. The low-budget pic was a surprise hit, and broke box office records while becoming a cultural phenomenon. The goddess Santoshi now became a famous goddess, and women all over India worshipped her. People treated the movie theatres showing Jai Santoshi Maa as a temple, bringing offerings of food, leaving slippers at the door. Guha claimed that people came to her asking her to bless them, as they perceived her to be a real goddess. However, she never became a devotee of the goddess herself, claiming that she was a devotee of the goddess Kali.
