Bolshoi Simulation of the Universe [720p]
The Bolshoi simulation is the most accurate cosmological simulation of the evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe yet made ("bolshoi" is the Russian word for "great" or "grand"). The first two of a series of research papers describing Bolshoi and its implications have been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. The first data release of Bolshoi outputs, including output from Bolshoi and also the BigBolshoi or MultiDark simulation of a volume 64 times bigger than Bolshoi, has just been made publicly available to the world's astronomers and astrophysicists. The starting point for Bolshoi was the best ground- and space-based observations, including NASA's long-running and highly successful WMAP Explorer mission that has been mapping the light of the Big Bang in the entire sky. One of the world's fastest supercomputers then calculated the evolution of a typical region of the universe a billion light years across. The Bolshoi simulation took 6 million cpu hours to run on the Pleiades supercomputer—recently ranked as seventh fastest of the world's top 500 supercomputers—at NASA Ames Research Center. From the Bolshoi Theatre 1989. Swan Lake is the very essence of classical ballet and has a rather venerable history of its own. First choreographed in 1877 by the great Marius Petipa for the Bolshoi, this original choreography has since been tweaked by almost every choreographer to get hold of it down through the years. Yuri Grigorovich keeps the general outline of the story of a prince who falls in love with the mythic half-woman, half-swan Odette (only to betray her when she appears to him in disguise as Odile). Grigorovich however added a controversial twist with his inclusion of a psychological dimension to the proceedings: the evil sorcerer cast as the dark twin of the hero-prince. The pearl of this production is undoubtedly Alla Mikhalchenko as Odette-Odile. Her impressive technique and brilliant acting gives the character a new expressive dimension. 3/6 of Yuri Burlaka's staging of the Mazurka des enfants, Grand Pas classique & Pas de trois from "Paquita" for the Bolshoi Ballet. November 17, 2008. Moscow, Russia. Set design by Alyona Pikalova, costumes by Yelena Zaitseva. Performed by Yelena Andrienko, Anastasia Goryacheva & Denis Medvedev. Here, the famous pas de trois has been restored musically to its original form, & although the Bolshoi utilized the choreographic notation of the Sergeyev Collection for this revival I'm not sure how much they followed it for the staging of the pas de trois, though it seems that it is very much authentic. For almost a century, this pas de trois has been known in the west as the "Minkus pas de trois". Thanks to my piano reduction of the complete "Paquita" Grand pas classique, I've learned that the majority of this music is not by Minkus at all, but by Eduard Deldevez, the composer of the score for the original full-length "Paquita" of 1846, with a male variation by Adolphe Adam. Perhaps a more appropriate title is the "Deldevez-Minkus-Adam Pas de trois"!
