Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste Of Honey (1978)
"Boogie Oogie Oogie" is the name of a popular song by disco/R&B; group A Taste Of Honey. Released from their self-titled album in 1978, it became an extremely popular 'crossover' song. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the Hot Soul Singles chart, and the Hot Dance Club Play chart. It would eventually sell over two million copies and has become one of the most recognizable songs from the late 1970s disco era. It would also help the group win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1978. Formed during 1971, A Taste Of Honey hailed from Los Angeles, California. The membership of the band consisted of Janice Marie Johnson (vocals, co-writer, bass), Carlita Dorhan (vocals, guitar), Perry Kibble (keyboards, co-producer, co-writer) and Donald Ray Johnson (drums). Long time friends Kibble and Janice Johnson (no relationship to Donald Ray) were the original members of the band. Each had left a band to join forces and, after going through several drummers, they settled on Johnson, as well as replacing lead singer with Gregory Walker, who left the band just prior to the successful release of "Boogie Oogie Oogie" to join Santana. Carlita Dorhan left the group in early 1976 and Hazel Payne was added. Get Off - Foxy (1978)
"Get Off" was a hit song by Miami-based Latin/disco band Foxy in 1978. Released from their LP of the same name, the song became a crossover hit. It spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart during the fall of that year and also peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Along with the track "Tena's Song", "Get Off" peaked at number eighteen on the disco chart. Foxy was a Latin dance/disco group formed in 1976 in Miami, Florida. The group consisted of Cuban vocalist-guitarist Ish 'Angel' Ledesma, percussionist Richard 'Richie' Puente, keyboardist Charlie Murciano, bass guitarist Arnold Paseiro and drummer Joe Galdo. Carl 'Carlo' Driggs contributed vocals/percussion and shared songwriting credits on their second album, "Get Off". Puente, who died on July 18, 2004 at age 51, was the son of the late, famous bandleader Tito Puente. Their biggest hit was "Get Off" in 1978 (written by Ledesma and Driggs), which was their only single release from the album "Get Off". Brian Avnet managed Foxy at the peak of their success and now manages the career of Josh Groban. Ledesma later formed the groups Oxo in 1983 and Company B in 1986. Driggs, in addition to his involvement and writing credits with Foxy, was the lead singer of Kracker, a group touted by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who released three albums. Driggs was also the lead singer of Paul Revere and The Raiders for over 20 years. Thischannel is dedicated to all the great 'old ...

Georgy Porgy - Toto featuring Cheryl Lynn (1978)
Toto was an American rock band founded in 1977 by some of the most popular and experienced Los Angeles session musicians of the time. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the 1980s, beginning with the band's self-titled debut, released during 1978. Continuing with 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful "Toto IV", Toto became one of the best-selling music groups of their era. They are known for such hit singles as "Hold The Line", "Rosanna", and "Africa". Although their popularity in the United States diminished in the 1990s and 2000s, they continued to tour to sold-out arenas, clubs and theaters internationally. Toto was known for their technical skill in the studio, as well as a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B;, and jazz, and although they were regularly associated with the soft rock genre, this broad array of musical styles helped them appeal to a variety of musicians and non-musician listeners. The band has released 17 albums and have sold over 30 million records to date. "Georgy Porgy" is a David Paich-written song released from Toto's self-titled debut album in 1978. Lynda Cheryl Smith (born March 11, 1957), better known by her stage name Cheryl Lynn is a disco, R&B; and soul singer best known for her 1978 disco classic, "Got To Be Real". During Lynn's debut album's run, the members of Toto were putting together their debut album. During the production, Lynn was asked to provide ...

I'll Take You There - The Staple Singers (1972)
I'll Take You There" is a number-one single written by Alvertis Isbell, produced by Al Bell and performed by soul/gospel family band The Staple Singers, released on Stax Records in February of 1972. The song spent a total of fifteen weeks on the Billboard charts and reached number one on the Hot 100. Bolstered by a "feel-good" vibe, "I'll Take You There" peaked at number-one on the Billboard R&B; Singles chart for four weeks in May of 1972. In June, "I'll Take You There" reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for one week. The song, ranked #276 on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, remains the most successful and recognizable single of the Staples' half-century-long career. The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B; singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914-2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (b. 1934), Pervis (b. 1935), Yvonne (b. 1936), and Mavis (b. 1939). This Place Hotel (aka Heartbreak Hotel) - The Jacksons (1980)
Originally named "Heartbreak Hotel", "This Place Hotel" was a hit recording by The Jacksons when it was released in 1980. Written by Michael, the song would precede Jackson's own hit "Billie Jean" in its insecurity-plagued tale of confusion. While his brothers did not sing background vocals, they were credited with playing percussion on the single while brother Tito contributed a guitar solo. The song reached number twenty-two on the Billboard Pop singles chart and number two on the R&B; singles chart when it was released and became the group's second-biggest single off their "Triumph" album, behind "Can You Feel It". The hit single has also become one of the most-sampled songs in hip-hop. The single's title was changed because of the 1956 Elvis Presley hit, "Heartbreak Hotel". In his autobiography, Michael Jackson reveals that he was not a fan of his future wife Lisa Marie's father's music, and it did not enter his mind when writing the song. It also scored five weeks at number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and two weeks as #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Flack produced the record herself under the pseudonym Rubina Flake. Low Rider - War (1975)
"Low Rider" is a song written by the band War and appearing on their 1975 album "Why Can't We Be Friends?". It reached number one on the Billboard R&B; charts and peaked at number seven on the Pop Singles chart. According to the Allmusic review of the song, "the lyric takes the cool image of the lowrider — the Chicano culture practice of hydraulically hot-rodding classic cars — and using innuendo, extends the image to a lifestyle." War, originally called Eric Burdon and War and often typeset as WAR, is an American funk band from California. Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, rhythm and blues, and reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. The band has sold over 50 million records to date. Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. A particular feature of War's sound is the use of harmonica and saxophone playing melody lines in unison, sounding like a single instrument, for example in the melody of "Low Rider". Their music has been sampled and recorded by many singers and groups, ranging from R&B;/pop singers such as Janet Jackson to nu metal band Korn and hip-hop groups like TLC. Jack And Jill - Ray Parker, Jr. & Raydio (1978)
Raydio was a funk and R&B; vocal group formed in 1977 by Ray Parker Jr., with Vincent Bohnam, Jerry Knight, and Arnell Carmichael. The group scored their first big hit in 1978 with "Jack And Jill", which was taken from their debut self-titled album. The song peaked at #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and reached #5 in the R&B; chart, earning a gold record in the process. Ray Erskine Parker, Jr. (born May 1, 1954) is an American guitarist, songwriter, producer and recording artist best known for writing and performing the theme song to the motion picture "Ghostbusters". Parker gained his reputation during the late 1960s as a member of the house band at the 20 Grand Club. This Detroit nightspot often featured Tamla/Motown acts, one of which, The Spinners, was so impressed with the young guitarist's skills that they added him to their touring group. Parker also wrote songs and did session work for The Carpenters, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder (an association which prompted a permanent move to Los Angeles), Deniece Williams, Jean-Luc Ponty, Leon Haywood, The Temptations, The Spinners, Boz Scaggs, David Foster, Rhythm Heritage, Gladys Knight and The Pips, The Honey Cone, Herbie Hancock and Diana Ross. In the mid-1970s he was a sideman in Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, before creating Raydio, in 1977. 19 - Paul Hardcastle (1985)
"19" was a song by English musician Paul Hardcastle released as the first single from his 1985 self-titled third studio album "Paul Hardcastle". The song features dialogue by television narrator Peter Thomas, and a strong anti-war message. The track is about America's involvement in the Vietnam War and the effect it had on the soldiers who served. "19" features sampled dialogue and news reports from "Vietnam Requiem", an ABC television documentary about the post-traumatic stress disorder suffered by veterans. The title "19" comes from the documentary's claim that the average age of an American combat soldier in the war was 19, as compared to the claim of World War II's 26. "19" reached the top twenty of the US pop charts, where it also topped the dance chart. For a while it was the top-selling single in thirteen countries (helped by the fact that versions of the song were recorded in French, Spanish, German and Japanese), and it received the Ivor Novello award for Bestselling Single Of 1985. The song's English language release came in at least three different 12" versions, each with an alternate cover design. Famous record and television producer Simon Fuller of "Britain's Got Talent" and "American Idol" named his management company 19 Entertainment after he signed Paul Hardcastle to Chrysalis Records and the single went to number one in the UK Thischannel is dedicated to all the great 'old school' R&B; music I grew up with, the stuff that originally made me tap my feet ...

Late in 1977, the band decided to switch labels, moving to MCA Records for "Galaxy". The album sold well, and the disco-tinged title track was a hit on the R&B; charts. "Galaxy" proved to be the last time War would hit the Top 40. Atomic Dog [Original Extended Version] - George Clinton (1982)
"Atomic Dog" is a song by George Clinton from his 1982 solo album "Computer Games". The track was released as a single in December of 1982. The single failed to reach the Top 100 of the Pop Chart at all, though it has arguably attained greater popular stature over the years since its release. George Clinton's P-Funk Collective reached its commercial and conceptual height in 1976 with the release of the Parliament album "Mothership Connection" and a series of spectacular concert tours. However, as the band and their concept of funk grew, the organization became entangled in internal dissension, legal disputes, and creative exhaustion. "Atomic Dog" was the P-Funk Collective's last single to reach #1 on the US R&B; chart. According to Clinton, most of the song's lyrics were ad-libbed during the recording process. Although "Atomic Dog" is now regarded a classic in American popular music, and the rhythmic hook from "Atomic Dog" has been widely sampled by other musicians, it was held back from radio stations at first. George Clinton's bad reputation in the industry, his political consciousness (as seen in his previous albums and recordings), and a general move towards more youthful-looking acts, kept his songs from being circulated on radio stations. Only after very strong sales was the song finally put on the air. The single "Atomic Dog" was released in December of 1982 and reached #1 on the R&B; charts, but peaked at #101 on the pop chart. Jungle Fever - The Chakachas (1972)
The Chakachas were a Belgium-based group of Latin Soul studio musicians. Also known as Les Chakachas or Los Chakachas, they started out in the late 1950s. Although they issued numerous recordings, they are best remembered as a one-hit wonder for their hit disco single "Jungle Fever" from 1972, which sold over a million copies in the US and reached #8. The song was also featured in the 1997 movie "Boogie Nights".
