2. Native Son AKA Sangre negra (1951)
Mount up, move on
May you find the way back home
Down and down we go
Down into bright October
Brothers in arms no more
Now that the war is over
Have you waded in and been to hell
Will you lie upon the sofa
see to the decoration of your shell
Now that the war is over
Mount up, move on
Damn the darkness, speed the dawn
They lost, we won
Try to find your way back home
Native son
Down and down we go
Now that the war is over
Brothers in arms no more
Now that the war is over
Have you waded in and been to hell
Will you lie upon the sofa
see to the decoration of your shell
Now that the war is over
Mount up, move on
Damn the darkness, speed the dawn
They lost, we won
May you find your way back home
Native son
I've seen many moons through these wrinkled eyes
The years have made me old but they've made me wise
Now the white man lives where our rivers run
For now better days have passed
We walk the streets of broken glass
Our people vanished as snow before the summer sun
Like dogs we were driven from this place
Such injustice, time will not erase
All these changes cannot be undone
When you feel the anger inside of you
Hold your head high - let your aim be true
Though your heart beats like a drum
My native son
Once there was a time my little one
Before the wagons - before the soldiers' guns
When this land was ours as far as the eagle flies
No white flag - no broken truce
With few words one can speak the truth - I don't hear it
Time won't heal it now
With each new day that comes to pass
Will the great spirit free us all at last?
He said we were the chosen ones
For all we had there's nothin' left
We won’t forgive - we can't forget
You know that your day will come
My native son
With each new day that comes to pass
Will the great spirit free us all at last?
What has happened can never be undone
When I was young - not yet a man
The sun rose and set upon our land
We were the chosen ones
You finally found the mainstream
In the middle of your life
You tapped into a vein
Of endless gold chains
Now you're locked up tight
Tearing down the middle of it
Splitting it right in half
Bobbing up and down the waves
Like a runaway slave
On a Huck Finn raft
CHORUS:
Take your wife
Take your family
Take your gun
Running through the woods
And the burned out neighborhoods
Looking for someone
A member of your tribe
A Place you can hide
'Til the war has begun
'Cause in the fields before the flood
You'll be spilling blood
Like a native son
Where you gonna run to
There ain't no underground
If only you could fly
You'd cut across the sky
Like a rifle round
Oh, who are your people
And where is your homeland
'Cause they're dying side by side
At the river of pride
Where we tried to take a stand
CHORUS TWICE
In the fields before the flood
You'll be spilling blood
Like a native son
I've seen many moons through these wrinkled eyes
The years have made me old but they've made me wise
Now the white man lives where our rivers run
For now better days have passed
We walk the streets of broken glass
Our people vanished as snow before the summer sun
Like dogs we were driven from this place
Such injustice, time will not erase
All these changes cannot be undone
When you feel the anger inside of you
Hold your head high - let your aim be true
Though your heart beats like a drum
My native son
Once there was a time my little one
Before the wagons - before the soldiers' guns
When this land was ours as far as the eagle flies
No white flag - no broken truce
With few words one can speak the truth - I don't hear it
Time won't heal it now
With each new day that comes to pass
Will the great spirit free us all at last?
He said we were the chosen ones
For all we had there's nothin' left
We won't forgive - we can't forget
You know that your day will come
My native son
With each new day that comes to pass
Will the great spirit free us all at last?
What has happened can never be undone
When I was young - not yet a man
The sun rose and set upon our land
We were the chosen ones
My native son
Can you spare me a quarter
though I have no one to call
I just thought it might save my ass one day
if the sky or the free world were to fall
this is the only thing that I can do
this is the only thing I know how to say
and when everything is gone
and the night it seems grows long
will you play this record anyway
there are a million ways to say it
there are a million lies to choose from
so don't look up
you might find that your head is stuck
no one's going to bail us out of this one
Every time I call your name
somehow I wish it was the same
for me and you and all the things we do
not in vain
Maybe I could give you a ride
though I don't really own a car
well it isn't anything so different
than living undernearth a dying star
well this is what we all get up for
when the clocks go out of time
cause nothing short of
war and death and money
will ever fucking change your mind
there are a million ways to die son
and there are a million places to choose from
so don't look up
you might find that your head is stuck
no one's going to bail us out of this one
Every time I call your name
somehow i wish it was the same
for me and you and all the things we do
not in vain
and who will kill this native son
who will learn from everything that we have done
Some are born to plough the fields of home
Some are born to happiness and never start to roam
I bent the bow, I Let the arrow fly
Your children go - do you ever wonder why?
Cross my heart, there's nothing I'd regret
Just that single perfect path, I haven't found it yet
Let's work it out, ifs not too late to try
I said Get real, I didn't say Goodbye
'Cos I was born to tell the truth and run
Remember me, remember me
It was all for love, the crazy things I've done
Remember me, I'm still your native son
Remember me, I'm still your native son
Oh, native son
Oh, native son
Some are born to watch the years go by
Some are born to happiness, it comes as no surprise
I bent the bow, I Let the arrow fly
I said Get real, I never said Goodbye
'Cos I was born to tell the truth and run
Remember me, remember me
It was all for love, the crazy things I've done
Remember me, I'm still your native son
Remember me, I'm still your native son
Oh, native son
Native son
What have you done
Where have you been
Who do you know
Where have you been
Who do you know?
CHORUS
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
Mainly devil-may-care
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
I'm still picking things
>From the air
Dizzy boy
Is there still joy
In being free
And in between
In being free
And in between?
CHORUS
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through this life
Nowhere
Right, I'm right where I belong
I find myself returning home
And all along, I guess I've known
I was born to be the native son
Falcon glide to meet the morning ray of sunlight
Take me home
For on your wings, my dreams are born
Returning from a foreign land
Once I believed that fame and fortune
Would have to become my destiny
So I sail away
For brighter days
And here I am
Where I began
Right, I'm right where I belong
At last I finally found my home
And here and now, I see I'm born
Born to be the native son
