MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – Appealing for help via a 1:54-minute video on YouTube, Felix Nathaniel "Angel" Manalo and his mother Tenny say their lives are in danger. Angel is the younger brother of Eduardo, the present executive minister of the powerful and influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014 and will be commemorating their 101st on Monday, July 27. Their father is Eraño "Erdy" Manalo, who died in August 2009 and was Iglesia's former executive minister. Angel Manalo says in the video, "Nananawagan po kami sa inyo dahil nanganganib po ang aming buhay. Sana'y matulungan niyo po kami." (We are appealing to you because our lives are in danger. We hope that you can help us.) He introduces his mother whose face is not seen in the video. Members of the Iglesia whom Rappler spoke with said it was indeed her voice. Introducing herself as the widow of Ka Erdy Manalo who led the INC for 46 years, Tenny pleads, "Ako'y nananawagan sa aming mga kapatid sa Iglesia na tulungan ninyo kami dahil may panganib sa aming buhay. Christians displaced by the current violence in Iraq asked the international community on Monday to help them leave the country. Hundreds of Christian IDPs (Internally Displaced People) demonstrated in Ankawa, the Christian area of Irbil, asking for immigration and a way out of the war-torn country, saying they have no future anymore in Iraq. Thousands fled into Irbil last week after Islamic fighters took control of the Christian villages around Mosul. The IDP's are now residing in St. Joseph's Cathedral in the city. On Monday they walked from the cathedral to the US consululate, carrying banners reading 'where is the world's consciousness? " and 'going back home and international protection is our demand.' Lwai Jalal, a 46-year-old IDP from the Christian village of Qaraqosh, said he was tired of having to leave his village over and over again, after Islamic fighters attacked it three times over the past months, and took it over each time before retreating. The village is now currently in the hands of the Islamic State. Sixty-year-old Namroud el-Hamdany, also from Qaraqosh described the Islamic fighters as "monsters" who could not be stopped. Imad Majid appealed for international help, saying humanitarian aid and military action were not enough. He claimed their only demand was "immigration" so the Christians could be safe. The extremists have demanded that Christians convert to Islam, pay a special tax, or be killed. A political analyst speaking in Lebanon on Wednesday said that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's announcement that they had established an Islamic state or caliph on Sunday will appeal to a "perceived marginalised youth" in the Middle East and elsewhere. "The danger is that if they succeed in the project in Iraq and Syria, that would even further radicalise more Sunni youth in particular," said Kawa Hassan, the knowledge officer for international development organisation Hivos. ISIL, or 'Islamic State' as they now wish to be known, announced this week that it had unilaterally established a caliphate in the areas under its control. It declared the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of its new self-styled state governed by Shariah law and demanded that all Muslims pledge allegiance to him. The extremist group overran huge swathes of northern and western Iraq in recent weeks with the help of other Sunni militant groups. However, Hassan said he believed in the short term there will be an "intensification of internal infighting within the radical groups" that could threaten ISIL's authority. The blitz across Iraq appears to have crested, at least for now, as it reaches Shiite-majority areas, where resistance is tougher, and as it seeks to consolidate its control of the territory already in hand. "In the short term they will be able to control the borders," added Hassan. "They will be able to recruit more fighters and since they have money, they have a story... so this gives an added value until an action is taken against them." Residents call for more help a year after Hurricane Manuel hit

A year after Tropical Storm Manuel hit Mexico's Pacific Coast, hundreds of residents in the resort city of Acapulco formed a human chain to call attention to the need for more government help with recovery efforts. Manuel brought torrential rains and massive flooding to Acapulco in the southern state of Guerrero. The storm killed at least 80 people and triggered a landslide in a village outside Acapulco that left at least 58 people missing. Three days of non-stop rain in Acapulco forced residents and tourists to wade through waist-high water to look for food, drinking water and other basic necessities. In the aftermath of Manuel, thousands of Guerrero residents were moved into shelters because their homes flooded or were built on hillsides at risk of mudslides. "We are marking a year (since Manuel hit), a year since we were flooded, on 13 September 2013 and until this day, no one has paid attention to our complaints," said Arturo Flores, an activist who helped organise the protest. Libya's Justice Minister calls for international help to disarm militias

LEADIN: Libya's Justice Minister has called on the world to "engage more positively" with helping disarm rebel militias in the country. Speaking in Rome, Salah Bashir Marghany also told reporters that "terrorism will find a foothold" if Libya becomes a failed state. STORYLINE: Libya's Justice Minister arrives in Rome with a plea to the international community. He says it was "wrong" for an arsenal of arms to be left in the country. Salah Bashir Marghany says disarming the rebel factions will go some way to finding a solution to the country's current turmoil. "In my belief Libya's problem is the amount of arms and the spread of arms that was left over after the revolution. I think it was wrong that the international community should have left such a big arsenal in Libya," he says. "This arsenal needs to be dismantled. I am not calling for killing or for bloodshed what I am calling for is Italy and the rest of the world to engage with us more positively in disarming the militias or any arsenal outside the control of the state and parallel with a political solution." Marghany came to Rome to talk about a project to help victims of sexual violence in Libya. But his news conference was dominated by the current crisis facing his country. Libya currently has two rival parliaments and governments. One is recently elected but based in Tobruk, where it moved after Islamist militias took control of both Tripoli and Libya's second-largest city, Benghazi during months of fighting. The previous Islamist-led parliament remains in Tripoli and is backed by the militias. Marghany says the militias should respect the result of the ballot box - and the will of the people. "The only way to power in a democracy is through the ballot box, not raising of arms because if anyone with a militia would make a claim to governance then we will have a failed state. Therefore we need to respect the democratic rules, which was the choice of the Libyan people," he says. The current in-fighting between different factions contradicts the revolution, and the fight for freedom from dictator Moammar Gadhafi, says Marghany. "Of course we need to be realistic and those with power and arms need to be talked to, disarmament is important and I strongly believe that many of the leaders of those groups would come to an accommodation with that, They are not all evil as such, not good against evil, there are issues. "These issues need to be addressed but without firing, without committing war crimes, without violations of human rights in Libya because such acts cuts into the essence, into the basis, into the principles upon which the Libyan revolution was based. It was a human rights revolution for freedom in the first place." Marghany offers a stark warning to the world if progress is not made. "I am calling for positive engagement to combat terrorism because if Libya becomes a failed state, terrorism will find a foothold in Libya." "I may add something here: that because of this breakdown of law and order we have daily assassinations in the two Libyan major cities, we have kidnappings of lawyers, of even ex-members of GNC (General National Congress), of activists and journalists, and I take this opportunity to call on everybody to release those hostages so the country can find a good start for peace". On Wednesday, Libya's struggling elected government and representatives of 15 neighbouring nations met in Madrid. They unanimously rejected the idea of military intervention as a way to restore stability in the oil-rich nation, which some say is on the brink of civil war. Protesters call for international help to free Yazidi women

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of Irbil, calling for more to be done to rescue Yazidi women they claim have been seized by Islamic State militants. According to Iraqi officials, hundreds of women have been abducted and sold into slavery. "Help us." The message from protesters - who are calling on the international community to help rescue women that are said to have been taken by the Islamic State (IS) group. Those joining the demonstration include Yazidis, Arabs, Kurds, men and women. "Today we are participating in this demonstration to deliver the message of our disagreement to the whole world, to deliver the voice of the Yazidi women to the whole world. Thousands of women were stolen by the terrorist group Daash (Islamic State group)," says Awaz Jangin Burhan, a KRG Parliament member representing the PUK party. The demonstrators make their way towards the US Consulate, waving banners and chanting for the women to be freed. A line of police officers is in position outside the compound. The protesters have come here to deliver a message to the Consulate, but no officials arrive. "We are asking for this as a humanitarian right and the case of women that have been sold daily for a very cheap price in the market. This is the biggest crime against those women," says Gasha Dara Hamid, a KRG Parliament member representing the PUK party. "But there's no response and now the international community is being questioned. But now the human rights and democracy are not being practiced." The protesters then make their way to a United Nations compound in Irbil. Again, they are met by a line of security forces - but that doesn't stop them chanting and waving banners. "Our first and main demand is that the Iraqi and KRG governments should intervene to free the women stolen by ISIS," says Hussam Abdallah Ali, one of the protesters. The Yazidis are a centuries-old religious minority viewed as apostates by the Islamic State, which has swept through large areas of Syria and Iraq. In August, tens of thousands of Yazidis were attacked by IS fighters and chased into the Sinjar mountains, where they were trapped for days without food or water. Most of them were freed only after the United States conducted airstrikes against the militants, who were surrounding the mountain. Kurds in Germany are calling on the international community to do more to stop the onslaught by Islamic State militants in Kobani, near the Turkish border. More than 550 people have been killed since the group launched its offensive on the Kurdish town last month. This is the Kreuzberg neighbourhood of Germany - home to a large Kurdish population. Kobani may be a long way from here, but the events unfolding in the town - on the Syrian side of the border with Turkey - are on many people's minds. The Kurdish society of Germany estimates that there are over one million people with Kurdish background living in Germany, most came here as guest workers in the 1960s. Many of the Kurds live in what used to be West Germany but some 60-thousand reside in the capital Berlin. Several Kurdish restaurants and cafes are located in the centre of Kreuzberg and here the assault on the Kurds in Kobani is discussed and agonised over. Jamshid Abdullah owns the Lasan restaurant. He gives away free food to Kurdish activists in Berlin and has also sent aid to Kurds fleeing the fighting in Syria. Abdullah says the crisis is affecting all Kurds. "We are sad and we want the whole world to help us. To help these poor people that don�t have any weapons. We want things to improve and we want the world to help," he says. Around the corner from the restaurant is the Kurdish centre of Berlin. The centre is managed by a number of Kurdish organisations in the German capital. They organise demonstrations, pile pressure on politicians and send aid to fellow Kurds in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Kazim Baba, spokesperson for the centre, says that Kurds are now on the forefront of the war against anti-democratic forces. "We Kurds are fighting for the whole world, the whole democratic world. And the democratic world has to help us. The IS (Islamic State) is a danger to the whole world, to Germany, to Europe and to the whole democratic world. Now the Kurds are not just fighting for themselves, they are fighting for the democratic word and we need help," he says. Ali Ertan Toprak is the head of Kurdish Organisation of Germany. He says the events in Kobani has had a profound effect on Kurds here. "There are over one million Kurds in Germany, it has become the new home for many Kurds. And of course we have a lot of connections to Kurdistan. Many of us have relatives and friends there and their fate concerns us as much as it does for Kurds there." Most Kurds in Germany come from Turkey, and there are also several million ethnic Turks in the country. This has led to some tension as many Kurds accuse Turkey of not doing enough to help the people in Kobani. But the Kurdish society of Germany is not asking Turkey to join the fighting, says Toprak, but they are calling for some cooperation. "Our main request is not that Turkey directly attacks but rather that they allow a humanitarian corridor where aid and military help for the Kurdish fighters can be brought to Kobani," he says. More than 550 people have been killed since the Islamic State group began its offensive on Kobani in mid-September, and the fighting has forced more than 200,000 people to flee into Turkey. The extremists have now seized a third of Kobani, closing in on positions held by the main Kurdish militia - the People's Protection Units, or YPG.
