Arden Cho (born August 16, 1985) is a Korean American model and actress who also displays her singing and songwriting talents on YouTube. In 2010, Cho was the model for the cosmetic brand Clinique's advertisement campaign in Asia.^[1] She has appeared in supporting roles in the television shows CSI: NY^[2] and Pretty Little Liars^[3] and the 2011 feature Mega Python vs. Gatoroid.^[4] Also in 2011, Cho starred in the 35-minute YouTube feature Agents of Secret Stuff presented by NigaHiga and Wong Fu Productions.^[5]

Early life[link]

Arden Cho was born in Amarillo, Texas. She spent most of her childhood years in Dallas and her late teenage years in Minnesota.^[6] Cho graduated in 2003 from Apple Valley Senior High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota and in 2007 from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign with a bachelor's degree in psychology, also studying theater.^[7]

During childhood Cho developed her musical skills, studying piano for eight years and cello for six. She also took four years of dance studio training and six years of gymnastics with a floor concentration.^[8] In 2003, her final year of Senior High School she performed in the Dance Team of the Walt Disney World Parade.^[9] That led to her participation in sports and competitive cheerleading in high school and college. Cho has also had seven years' training in martial arts, in particular Tae Kwon Do.^[10]

In 2004, Cho was named Miss Korea Chicago, granting her the opportunity to compete in the Miss Korea Pageant in Seoul, South Korea, for the honor of representing South Korea in the Miss Universe Pageant. Cho then acted as Master of Ceremonies for the 2005 Miss Korea Chicago beauty pageant and the 27th Inauguration of the Korean American Association of Chicago in 2007^[11] and as co-host of the 2010 JYJ United States Tour with Shane Yoon.^[12]

After being named Miss Korea Chicago in 2004, Cho visited orphanages and made public appearances for humanitarian causes in her ambassadorial role. These experiences "helped solidify her belief in the value of connecting with others and the paramount importance of helping those less fortunate."^[13] In pursuit of this ideal and as a follow-up to these experiences she visited Kenya in the summer of 2007 on a two-month humanitarian trip before moving to Los Angeles.^[14]

In 2010, the cosmetic brand Clinique announced Cho as the model for their newest advertisement campaign in Asia. The campaign was launched in mid-November 2010. Clinique was reported to have stated that they "selected Cho not because she was Korean, but because she had the beauty to represent Asia."^[15] Cho modeled for Reebok Korea in 2010 and for Nike Japan in 2008. She has also modeled for Apple and Alexander McQueen and appeared in Vogue, Purple Fashion and Nylon Magazine.^[16]

Cho has appeared in films, television series and commercials in the United States and Asia.^[17] In 2011 she appeared in the role of Pru, a friend of Paige McCullers (Lindsey Shaw) in Season 1, Episode 20 ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), of the ABC Family show Pretty Little Liars.^[18] The episode originally aired on March 7, 2011.^[19] In 2011 she also appeared in the role of Gia in the monster film Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, directed by Mary Lambert. In 2009 Cho appeared in Season 5, Episode 19 ("Communication Breakdown"), of the CBS show CSI: NY, in the supporting role of Gahee Paik, the daughter of a Korean father suspected of murder.^[20] The episode originally aired on March 25, 2009.^[21] In 2008 Cho played the grown-up lead of Hyori (the younger version being played by Megan Lee) in the short film My First Crush, directed by Rocky Jo.^[22] She has also appeared in the webseries KTown Cowboys.^[23]

On February 22, 2011, Cho released the single "I’m Just a Girl" on iTunes.^[24] Cho was the co-writer, composer and singer on the single; Ed Huang was co-writer and music producer.^[25] On February 25, 2011, Cho published a self-produced music video for the single on YouTube featuring Tim Lacatena.^[26] Musical videos featuring her collaborations with other YouTube figures including Gerald Ko, Jason Chen, Ken Salomon and Megan Lee appear on her ardenBcho YouTube account, reflecting her initial view of them as nonprofessional.^[27] Another musical collaboration to which Cho has lent her voice is the non-commercial Mark Allen song "I Once Knew."^[28]

Cho is a prolific YouTube author, mainly producing vlogs and musical videos but also appearing as a guest on established YouTube channels. Her commercial and film work may also be observed on YouTube.

In May 2010, Cho and Grace Su created the YouTube account artichokeandpeachies,^[29] named for its owners' respective monikers, "artichoke" being a pseudo-homophone of "Arden Cho" and "peachies" alluding to Grace Su’s personal blog at peachies.net. The channel features the collaborative video-blogging efforts of the twenty-something Los Angeles roommates. Of the channel, Cho said, “Initially, we had no idea what direction we wanted to go in. The first blog we did, we basically just said ‘hi.’”^[30] Although the account is now closed, Cho has pursued the publishing of YouTube content with her solely owned accounts ardencho and ardenBCho. The accounts are for her vlogs and her film and television work, respectively.

Cho also stars as a lead in the Nigahiga and Wong Fu Productions 35-minute feature Agents of Secret Stuff. The feature premiered in a special screening event at the CGV Cinemas in Koreatown, Los Angeles, on November 23, 2010, and officially premiered online on November 24, 2010, on Ryan Higa's YouTube channel.^[31] Appearing alongside Cho as the protagonist is Higa accompanied by Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval in the role of the antagonist and Aki Aleong.^[32]

James Christian "Jimmy" Kimmel (born November 13, 1967) is an American comedian, actor, voice artist and television host. He is the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a late-night talk show that airs on ABC. Prior to that, Kimmel was best known as the co-host of Comedy Central's The Man Show and Win Ben Stein's Money. Kimmel is also a television producer, having produced shows such as Crank Yankers, Sports Show with Norm Macdonald, and The Andy Milonakis Show.

Early life[link]

Kimmel was born in the Mill Basin neighborhood of the New York City borough of Brooklyn,^[1] the eldest of three children of Joann (née Iacono), a homemaker, and James Kimmel, an IBM executive.^[2][3][4] He is Roman Catholic and, as a child, served as an altar boy.^[5][6] Kimmel is of German and Irish descent on his father’s side and Italian descent on his mother’s side.^[7] His uncle, Frank Potenza, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as a regular from 2003 until his death in 2011.^[8]

The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, when he was nine years old.^[2] He graduated from Ed W. Clark High School and then attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas for one year before attending Arizona State University for two years without completing a degree.

Kimmel began working in the radio industry while in high school, hosting a Sunday night interview show on UNLV's college station KUNV. While attending Arizona State University, he became a popular caller to the KZZP-FM afternoon show hosted by radio personalities Mike Elliott and Kent Voss in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1989, Kimmel landed his first paying job alongside Voss as morning drive co-host of The Me and Him Show at KZOK-FM in Seattle, Washington. Ten months later, Kimmel and Voss were fired by KZOK (for reasons unknown) and were fired again a year later at WRBQ-FM in Tampa, Florida. Kimmel went from Tampa to host his own show at KCMJ in Palm Springs, California, where Kimmel convinced a young Carson Daly to drop out of college and become his intern. After a morning stint at KRQQ In Tucson, Arizona, Kimmel landed at KROQ-FM in Los Angeles. He spent five years as "Jimmy The Sports Guy" for the Kevin and Bean morning show. During this time he met and befriended a struggling comedian named Adam Carolla.^{[citation needed]}

Kimmel began his television career as the comedic counterpart to Ben Stein on the game show Win Ben Stein's Money, which began airing on Comedy Central in 1997. His quick wit and loutish everyman personality were counterpoints to Stein's monotone performing style and patrician demeanor. The combination earned the pair an Emmy award for Best Game Show Host.^{[citation needed]}

In 1999, during his time with Win Ben Stein's Money, Kimmel was also co-host with Adam Carolla and co-creator (with Daniel Kellison) of Comedy Central's The Man Show. Kimmel permanently left Win Ben Stein's Money in 2001, replaced by comedian Nancy Pimental, who was eventually replaced by Kimmel's cousin Sal Iacono. The Man Show's success allowed Kimmel, Carolla and Kellison to create and produce, under the banner Jackhole Industries, Crank Yankers for Comedy Central (on which Kimmel plays the characters "Elmer Higgins", "Terrence Catheter", "The Nudge", "Karl Malone" and himself), and later The Andy Milonakis Show for MTV2. Kimmel also produced and co-wrote the feature film Windy City Heat, which won the Comedia Award for Best Film at the Montreal Comedy Festival.^{[citation needed]}

In January 2003, Kimmel permanently left The Man Show to host his own late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel Live was briefly also broadcast on Irish digital TV channel 3e.^[9] In the April 2007 issue of Stuffmagazine.com, Kimmel was named the "biggest badass on TV". Kimmel said it was an honor but clearly a mistake.

Since the show's second season, it has not actually been broadcast live. This is due to an incident during the 2004 NBA Finals in Detroit, when Kimmel appeared on ABC's halftime show to make an on-air plug for his show. He suggested that if the Detroit Pistons defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, "they're gonna burn the city of Detroit down ... and it's not worth it." Officials with Detroit's ABC affiliate, WXYZ-TV, immediately announced that night's show would not air on the station. Hours later, ABC officials pulled that night's show from the entire network. Kimmel later apologized.^[10] The incident led ABC officials to force Kimmel to tape his show an hour before it airs in most of the country to check for offending content.^[11]

Kimmel usually ends his show with, "My apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time." When Matt Damon did actually appear on the show to be interviewed, he walked in and sat down only to be told just a few seconds later by Kimmel, "Sorry, but once again we are completely out of time." Damon seemed to become angry.^{[citation needed]}

In February 2008 Kimmel showed a mock music video with a panoply of stars called, "I'm Fucking Ben Affleck",^[12] as "revenge" after his then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman and Matt Damon recorded a similar video, "I'm Fucking Matt Damon". Silverman's video originally aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and became an "instant YouTube sensation."^[13] Kimmel's "revenge" video featured himself, Ben Affleck, and a large lineup of stars, particularly in scenes spoofing the 1985 "We Are the World" video: Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Robin Williams, Harrison Ford, Dominic Monaghan, Benji Madden and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, Lance Bass, Macy Gray, Josh Groban, Huey Lewis, Perry Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Pete Wentz, Meat Loaf, Rebecca Romijn, Christina Applegate, Dom Joly, Mike Shinoda, Lauren Conrad, and Joan Jett, among others. After this Jimmy's sidekick, Guillermo, appeared in a spoof of The Bourne Ultimatum, which starred Damon. He was then chased down by Damon as Matt cursed about Kimmel being behind all this. Guillermo also stopped Damon on the red carpet one time and before he could finish the interview he said, "Sorry we are out of time." The most recent encounter was titled "The Handsome Men's Club" which featured Kimmel, along with the "Handsome Men", who were: Matthew McConaughey, Rob Lowe, Lenny Kravitz, Patrick Dempsey, Sting, Keith Urban, John Krasinski, Ethan Hawke, Josh Hartnett, Tony Romo, Ted Danson, Taye Diggs, Gilles Marini, and Ben Affleck, speaking about being handsome and all the jobs that come with it. At the end of the skit Kimmel has a door slammed in his face by none other than Matt Damon, stating that they had run out of time and then Damon continues with a sinister laugh. Jennifer Garner also makes a surprise appearance.

As a tradition, celebrities voted off Dancing with the Stars appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, causing Kimmel to describe himself as "the three-headed dog the stars must pass on their way to No-Dancing Hell".^[14] In the 2008 season of his show, Kimmel started another tradition of ceremonially burning the dancers' shoes after they were voted off DWTS.^{[citation needed]}

Kimmel's other television work included being the on-air football prognosticator for Fox NFL Sunday for four years. He has had numerous appearances on other talk shows including, but not limited to, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Howard Stern Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and The Late Show with David Letterman. Kimmel has appeared on The Late Show five times, most recently in 2010. Kimmel served as roastmaster for the New York Friars' Club Roast of Hugh Hefner and Comedy Central Roasts of Pamela Anderson. He has appeared on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, along with his parking lot security guard Guillermo.

In August 2006, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel would be the host of their new game show Set for Life.^[15] The show debuted on July 20, 2007. On April 6, 2007, Kimmel filled in for Larry King on Larry King Live. That particular show was about the paparazzi and Kimmel reproached Emily Gould, an editor from Gawker.com, about the web site's alleged stalking of celebrities. On July 8, 2007, Kimmel managed the National League in the 2007 Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game in San Francisco. He played in the game in 2004 and 2006 (Houston and Pittsburgh). On July 11, 2007, Kimmel along with basketball player LeBron James, hosted the 2007 ESPY Awards. The show aired on ESPN on July 15, 2007. Kimmel hosted the American Music Awards on ABC four times, in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Kimmel guest hosted Live with Regis and Kelly during the week of October 22, 2007 – October 26, 2007, commuting every day between New York and Los Angeles. In the process, he broke the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest distance (22,406 miles (36,059 km)) travelled in one work week.^[16]

Kimmel has performed in several animated films, often voicing dogs. His voice appeared in Garfield and Road Trip, and he portrayed Death's Dog in the Family Guy episode "Mr. Saturday Knight"; Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane later presented Kimmel with a figurine of his character on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kimmel also did voice work for Robot Chicken. Kimmel's cousin "Sal" (Sal Iacono) has accepted and won a wrestling match with WWE superstar Santino Marella. On January 14, 2010, in the midst of the 2010 Tonight Show host and time slot conflict, Kimmel was the special guest of Jay Leno on The Jay Leno Show's "10 at 10" segment. Kimmel derided Leno in front of a live studio audience for taking back the 11:35 pm time slot from Conan O'Brien, and repeatedly insulted Leno. He ended the segment with a plea that Leno "leave our shows alone," as Kimmel and O'Brien had "kids" while Leno only had "cars".^[17]

Kimmel also made a brief appearance in the TV commercial "There's A Soldier In All Of Us" promoting the 2010 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops, along with Kobe Bryant. He is seen taking cover from bullets, then firing an RPG-7 with the words PROUD N00b on it, with the aftershock from the weapon sending him tumbling backwards.

He has been asked to host the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards which will air on September 23, 2012, marking his first time hosting the event.^[18]

Kimmel hosted the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. on April 28, 2012.

Personal life[link]

Kimmel and his then girlfriend, Gina, married in June 1988. They have two children, Katie (born 1991) and Kevin (born 1993). The marriage ended in separation in early 2002. Kimmel then dated comedian Sarah Silverman for five years, splitting with her in March 2009.^[19] He started dating current girlfriend, Molly McNearney, in October 2009. McNearney is also a co-head writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live.^[20]

Kimmel plays the bass clarinet. He got a chance to showcase his talent during a July 20, 2008, concert in Costa Mesa, California, featuring the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, when he took the stage and played bass clarinet on their hit song "The Impression That I Get."^[21]

Kimmel has spoken publicly of being a narcoleptic.^[22]

Kimmel co-founded the annual LA Feast of San Gennaro,^[23] which celebrates Italian culture through entertainment, music and cuisine. The festival also honors outstanding members of the Los Angeles community and raises funds to aid needy children and families in the city. He hosted Los Angeles' eighth annual feast of San Gennaro from September 28 to 30, 2009.^[24] Kimmel served as Master of Ceremonies for the National Italian American Foundation's 34th Anniversary Gala in Washington, D.C., on October 24, 2009.

Florence Nightingale Graham (December 31, 1884 – October 18, 1966), who went by the business name Elizabeth Arden, was a Canadian-American businesswoman who founded what is now Elizabeth Arden, Incorporated, and built a cosmetics empire in the United States. At the peak of her career, she was one of the wealthiest women in the world.

Biography[link]

Arden was born in 1884 in Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada. Her parents had emigrated to Canada from Cornwall, United Kingdom in the 1870s. Her father, William Graham, was Scottish and her mother, Susan, was Cornish and had arranged for a wealthy aunt in Cornwall to pay for her children's education.^[1] Arden dropped out of nursing school in Toronto.^[2]

She then joined her elder brother in New York City, working briefly as a bookkeeper for the E.R. Squibb Pharmaceuticals Company. While there, Arden spent hours in their lab, learning about skincare. She then worked—again briefly—for Eleanor Adair, an early beauty culturist, as a "treatment girl".

Career[link]

In 1909 Arden formed a partnership with Elizabeth Hubbard, another culturist. When the partnership dissolved, she coined the business name "Elizabeth Arden" from her former partner and from Tennyson's poem "Enoch Arden". With a $6,000 loan from her brother, she then used the shop space to open her first salon on 5th Avenue. The name red door salon was also a stroke of genius. In those days, all building were grey in colour and looked alike so to create a point of difference, she painted the door to her salon red! Thus the name red door salon was born.

What is also interesting to know is so many beauty brands start their business in department stores through counters. There were only 2 brands that began their business with salons: Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein.

In 1912 Arden travelled to France to learn beauty and facial massage techniques used in the Paris beauty salons. She returned with a collection of rouges and tinted powders she had created. In an era when it was generally acceptable for only entertainers to wear makeup, Arden introduced modern eye makeup to North America. She also introduced the concept of the "makeover" in her salons.

Arden collaborated with A. Fabian Swanson, a chemist, to create a "fluffy" face cream. The success of the cream, Venetian Cream Amoretta, and corresponding lotion, Arden Skin Tonic, led to a long-lasting business relationship. This revolutionized cosmetics, bringing a scientific approach to formulations. Other innovations included creating foundations that matched a person's skin tone; creating the idea of the "Total Look" in which lip, cheek, and fingernail colors matched or coordinated; and the first to make a cosmetics commercial shown in movie houses.

During World War II, Arden recognized the changing needs of the American woman entering the work force. She showed women how to apply makeup and dress appropriately for careers outside the home. She created a lipstick called Montezuma Red, for the women in the armed forces that would match the red on their uniforms. Although most of her commercial success was in cosmetics, she also pioneered restorative musical exercises based on yoga. She started a fashion business in 1943 with notable designers like Charles James and Oscar de la Renta on staff. By the mid-1930s, she committed to owning thoroughbred horses and to racing them in the US.

She began expanding her international operations in 1915, and started opening salons across the world. By the end of 1930s, it was said that "There are only three American names that are known in every single corner of the globe: Singer sewing machines, Coca Cola, and Elizabeth Arden." A fact proved by Heinrich Harrer in his book Seven Years in Tibet, where he stated that it's possible to buy Arden's products—even in Tibet. At the peak of her career, she had a salon in New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Maine, Arizona, Phoenix, Southhampton, Surfside, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Honolulu, Lima. Toronto, Montreal, Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, Johannesburg, London, Paris, Zurich, Vienna, Milan, Rome, Cannes, Madrid, Brussels, Copenhagen, The Hague, London, Ontario, Cape Town, Nassau, Tulsa, Quebec City, and Biarritz. She launched all of them personally and she owned all of them except the one in Paris, which she gave to her sister, Gladys, Vicomtesse de Maublanc.

In recognition of her contribution to the cosmetics industry, she was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by the French government in 1962.

Arden died in New York City in 1966; she was interred in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York, under the name Elizabeth N. Graham.

Towards the end of her life, Arden seemingly did not accept her mortality; she failed to arrange her affairs to minimize estate and inheritance taxes. After her death, the company and private estate were heavily taxed, reducing the latter to some US$40 million net worth at a time when her horse-farm operations required up to $10 million annually.^{[citation needed]}. The company liquidated many worldwide salons to pay taxes. Her survivors were obliged to sell Main Chance Farm and to auction many Arden personal assets as well.

A feature-length documentary film The Powder and the Glory (2009) by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman, details the rivalry between Arden and Helena Rubinstein.

Innovations[link]

Ask most people today to tell you which beauty brand first comes to their mind and the likelihood is the brand Elizabeth Arden would be last of the list. But what most people are unaware that this is the brand that pioneered many innovations that were way ahead of its competitors.

Since the beginning of the brand and all the way to the early 20th century, Arden was at the forefront of skincare innovations, creating products that were way ahead of its time.

1) 8 hour cream: This isn't just cult favourite among celebrities, makeup artists worldwide for no reason. In fact, this was the first beauty product in the beauty world that contains Salicylic Acid, which allows it gently exfoliate the skin. It's ability to treat all kinds of skin concerns is a miracle itself. The product can be used as a lip balm to treat chapped lips, soothing sunburn skin, blusher, brow groomer and for manicures and pedicures. It was said that in Kylie Minogue's MTV "can't get you out of my head", this cream was spread all over her body to create that beautiful shimmery look you see on her body. The name 8 hour came actually from a customer whom used the product on her son and said the chapped skin was healed in 8 hours. To date, no other product comes close to making such as similar claim.

2) Ceramide technology and the capsules packaging: Ask anyone when the word ceramide is mentioned, which beauty brand would they think of and the answer will almost likely be 99.9% Elizabeth Arden. Cermaides are part of our skin's natural intercellular lipids that helps to prevent moisture loss and prevent external aggression from entering the skin. Arden pioneering the discovery of Ceramides and became the first cosmetic company to produce bio-engineered ceramides. To date this technology is still so much associated with Arden that no other major cosmetic company dared to shout that they too use ceramides except for certain brand's haircare line.

The other related innovation from Arden was the offering of bio-engineered Ceramides in individual-doses in the form of capsules. This innovation allows for easy usage but more importantly allow the product to be concentrate, potent and preservative-free, which is unheard of in the 70s. So the discovery of bio-engineered ceramides and the capsules packaging together is a powerful force and remains till today a Arden signature and symbol. Until now no other prestige beauty company has ever dared to copy this concept.

3) Visible difference refining moisture cream complex Arden R&D created one of the most successful moisturisers back in the 70s. While most moisturisers keep the skin comfortable and well-hydrated. Arden introduce Visible Difference Refining Moisture Cream Complex / RMCC in short, which claims to promote smoother, more refined skin in 21days. This product became so famous that in Taiwan, as the name was too long, loyal customers simply call it the 21 days cream. To date, this product still remains a staple in the product assortment of the brand and continues to do well among those who have used it.

4) Home DIY peels: During the 80s, peels were considered the next hottest beauty treatment in the industry and these were mostly performed by dermatologists or aestheic doctors. However due to the high percentage of Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHA) used, they can be very irritating to the skin. Arden was the first brand to introduce "Peel and Reveal", an an-home peel treatment that exfoliates the skin gently without irritation. This was thanks the presence of a unique "sugar-cube" technology, which packs the AHA (glycolic acid) in a "sugar cube", thus allowing the AHA to be slowly released upon contact with the skin to exfoliate the skin without irritation. Again Arden was ahead of the game and with its success, came copycats from other prestige beauty brands to also created their version of DIY peels but most of these other copycats have since disappeared from the shelves.

5) Skin illuminating complex: In the early 90s, there was the usual talk about anti-ageing, hydration, firming in the beauty industry. No one was prepare to be hearing something about radiant, healthy looking skin. Arden did a consumer research to ask what women want kind of skin would be desirable and the common answer they got was to have the skin that looks healthy, even without makeup. With this objective in mind, Arden laboratories went on to discover Retinyl Linoleate, a unique form of Vitamin A that promotes healthy-looking skin. Arden introduced another first in the market: A new product called Skin Illuminating Complex, which claims to promote radiance and clarity, in short healthy-looking skin. Most consumers said the product delivers what its tagline promises "in 6 days, see new clarity and in 6 months, skin looks healthier, more radiant even without makeup!". The product was a massive success worldwide and again prompt the other prestige beauty companies to jump on the bandwagon with their version. Arden was again ahead of its time.

These examples go to show that Arden was actually the brand to go for if you wanted innovative skincare products that truly deliver unique and superior results.

Personal life[link]

In 1915, Arden married Thomas J. Lewis, one of her American employees turned banker—thus becoming an American citizen. According to several books written on Elizabeth Arden, Thomas really did adored and loved Elizabeth and was most accommodating to being married to a successful businesswoman, which was not-the-norm in those days. It wasn't just love but Thomas also saw potential in the business and wanted to help Elizabeth grow it further. Thomas was the one that help Elizabeth Arden grow her business beyond the salons when he recommended that her products be sold in departmental stores over the counters. Initially, she was reluctant to do so but at Thomas's convincing persuasion and (love), she agreed and the success of her Point-of-sales business made her an even more wealthy woman. However, Arden was a tough woman and love wasn't exactly something that is constantly on her mind; career and her business was. They divorced in 1934 and it was said then that Thomas was lured over to work for Helena Rubinstein but unfortunately, he never created the "sales magic" he created when he was working for Arden. Miss Arden and Mademoiselle Chanel shared one thing in common, both were strong-headed women who put their careers first as they worked their guts out, both were loved by men whom truly adored them but for both women, the relationships did not last and did not produced any off springs.

A second marriage, to genuine aristocrat (but self-titled) Georgian-Russian Prince Michael Evlanoff, lasted only two years.^{[citation needed]}

Thoroughbred horse racing[link]

Arden used the name Maine Chance Farm for her Thoroughbred horse racing and breeding operation in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1931 she had bought her first horse at the Fasig-Tipton sales at the Saratoga Race Course. From 1944 on, she worked closely with Leslie Combs II who selected and purchased horses for her. However, according to a 1947 interview with the Thoroughbred Record, Combs said she had a good eye for horses herself and chose a number of successful runners on her own.

In the nineteen forties and fifties Elizabeth Arden built her Maine Chance Farm stable into a major force in American Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1945, Star Pilot and Beaugay were the Eclipse Award colt and filly champions, and her stable was the leading money-winner in the United States. In 1947 her colt Jet Pilot, trained and ridden by future Hall of Famers Tom Smith and Eric Guerin won the Kentucky Derby. Putting her on the cover of the May 6, 1946 issue of Time magazine. In 1948, she also acquired the great filly Busher as a broodmare from a spectacular auction conducted by Louis B. Mayer. Busher was not only inducted into the Hall of Fame, she ranked #40 in Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. In 1954, her filly "Fascinator," won the Kentucky Oaks. For her contribution to the racing industry, Elizabeth Arden Graham was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2003.

Sara Beth Bareilles ( /bəˈrɛlɪs/ bə-REL-is; born December 7, 1979)^[1] is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She achieved mainstream success in 2007 with the hit single "Love Song", which brought her into the number one spot on the Billboard Pop 100 chart.^[2] She has sold over 1 million records in the United States alone and has been nominated for a Grammy Award three times.^[3] In the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, Bareilles was a celebrity judge alongside Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. In February of 2012, VH1 placed Bareilles in the #80 spot of the Top 100 Greatest Women in Music.^[4]

Early life[link]

Bareilles was born and raised in Eureka, California, the youngest of three daughters of Bonnie Halvorsen (née Capellas), a funeral home worker, and Paul Bareilles, an insurance adjuster.^[5][6] She is of Italian, German, Portuguese, and French descent (she speaks Italian and lived in Italy for a year).^[7] Bareilles was raised Catholic^[8] and participated in the high school choir, Limited Edition, and local community theater musical productions, including her high school's production of Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey.^[9]

Bareilles attended the Communication Studies program at the University of California, Los Angeles,^[1] where she was a member of the co-ed a cappella group Awaken a Cappella,^[10] and can be heard on their Dysfunktional Family album singing "Gravity" and "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5.^[11] The group's rendition of Bareilles' "Gravity" was featured on the Best of College a Cappella 2004 compilation CD. Sara also stated on MTV's TRL that she and the band Maroon 5 have been acquainted since their younger days in California when the band was known as Kara's Flowers. She performed in the annual student concert UCLA Spring Sing, winning twice.

[edit] 2002–2006: Career beginnings and Careful Confessions

After graduating from college in 2002, Bareilles performed at local bars and clubs (such as the Hotel Café and Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles), building a following before performing in larger venues. She issued two demos of mostly live tracks in 2003: The First One in April and The Summer Sessions in October. In 2004, she appeared as a singer in a bar in the indie film Girl Play, performing the song "Undertow".^[9]

In January 2004, Bareilles released her first studio album, Careful Confessions. She signed a contract with Epic Records on April 15, 2005.^[12] The remainder of the year and early 2006 were spent writing and reworking songs for her upcoming album.^[1]

In mid-2004 she opened for Rocco DeLuca and the Burden during their inaugural headline tour, supported Guster on their first UK tour and co-headlined a tour with Jon McLaughlin.^[13] She toured as the opening act in 2006 for Marc Broussard's "Carencro" tour. Bareilles' song "Gravity" appeared briefly in the 2006 independent film Loving Annabelle. In 2007, Bareilles toured as the opening act for Aqualung and Mika, and later that year opened for several shows on both Maroon 5 and Paolo Nutini's U.S. tours. She also opened for James Blunt on his U.S. Tour in association with VH1 You Oughta Know.

In June 2007, iTunes featured Bareilles' single "Love Song" as the free single of the week. The following month, her major-label debut Little Voice shot to #1 on the list of most downloaded albums of the music store^[14] in its first week of release, and debuted at #45 on the Billboard 200 chart. After being featured on a Rhapsody commercial in 2007, "Love Song" began climbing the pop charts, jumping from #73 to #16 in one week. It entered the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 27, 2007, and peaked at #4. On other charts, such as the Pop 100 and Hot AC, "Love Song" hit #1. Bareilles performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday, January 17, 2008, and on the Today show on Thursday, February 21, 2008. Soon after that, the song entered the UK Singles Chart, peaking at #4. The music video was directed by Josh Forbes and stars British actor Adam Campbell.

As of 2010, Little Voice has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. The album peaked in the Billboard 200 at #7, and the UK Top 40 at #9.^[15] Bareilles' breakthrough single, "Love Song" has since been certified 3× Platinum.

On October 28, 2008, Bareilles released "Between the Lines: Sara Bareilles Live at the Fillmore" on DVD and CD. The package is a recording of her first headlining tour at the famous Fillmore in San Francisco. This package also included unique live recordings of her unreleased song "August Moon", as well as a cover of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". She concluded the tour in her home town of Eureka, California on December 19, 2008, at the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts.

She toured with Counting Crows and Maroon 5 between July 22 and August 26, 2008. The first stop was Virginia Beach, Virginia and the last stop Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.^[16] Bareilles was selected as MTV artist of the week for July 7–11 and appeared again on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday, July 9, 2008; and on December 9, 2008 (with Ingrid Michaelson).

During the spring of 2009, Bareilles was on her second headlining tour, the "Gravity Tour," to promote the third and final single from her album Little Voice. She made her third appearance in Charlottesville, VA during UVA's annual Springfest on March 28, her first as the opener for Marc Broussard in 2005 and the second being an opening for Maroon 5. Bareilles also played multiple college shows in April and May. Some were for college students only and others were open to the public.

She sent out a special holiday message to fans on her mailing list and gave out a free live acoustic EP recorded during her Gravity Tour last Spring. The EP contains 7 acoustic songs, including a new song "Free Ride", "I'm On Fire", a Bruce Springsteen cover duet with Tony Lucca, and two speaking segments.

In early 2010, Bareilles recorded video of what she called "An Ode to Jersey Shore" and posted it to her official website as a gag for fans.^[17]

[edit] 2009–2012: Kaleidoscope Heart and The Sing-Off

After an extended period of writer's block,^[18] Bareilles began work on the follow-up to her major label debut in the summer of 2009, collaborating with the likes of Amir "Questlove" Thompson, members of Weezer, and Pharrel Williams. As the songs began to take their final shape, Neal Avron was assigned to produce, record, and mix the entire album. The album, eventually titled Kaleidoscope Heart, was recorded at The Village Recorder and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles.

The first single from Kaleidoscope Heart, "King of Anything", began receiving radio airplay in the US in May 2010,^[19] and was released for sale in June.^[20] "King of Anything" had its first play on the UK radio airwaves on Paul Kay's "Album Download" show on Mid-Wales commercial radio station "Radio Maldwyn – The Magic 756" in August 2010. "King of Anything" has since been certified platinum by the RIAA.

In anticipation of the new album, Bareilles released a series of webisodes, featuring the making of select songs from Kaleidoscope Heart, including "King of Anything", "Uncharted", "Gonna Get Over You", "Bluebird", and a strings-only version of "King of Anything". The first webisode also contains Sara writing the chorus for "Hold My Heart". She was selected as VH1's Posted Artist of the Month for July 2010,^[21] chronicling her life leading up to the album's release.

Kaleidoscope Heart was released on September 7, 2010 and debuted at number 1 in the United States, selling 90,000 copies.^[22] Interestingly, her previous album Little Voice re-entered the charts at number 200 in the same week, bookending the charts.^[23]

Bareilles toured in support of Kaleidoscope Heart from September to December 2010, with most of the shows being sold out. Bareilles toured Europe and parts of Asia and Australia with Maroon 5 throughout spring 2011. She embarked on a small headline "Uncharted" tour in April 2011 with openers Elizabeth & the Catapult and Ximena Sariñana in support of the second single from Kaleidoscope Heart "Uncharted", which concluded April 23, 2011 in Memphis, Tennessee. She also opened select shows for country music duo Sugarland on their Summer 2011 Incredible Machine Tour. The third single off of Kaleidoscope Heart is "Gonna Get Over You," with a music video directed by Jonah Hill.

On April 21, 2011, NBC aired the "Paradigms of Human Memory" episode of comedy television series Community, in which "Gravity" was used during a montage scene reflecting on the characters Jeff and Annie's previous interactions. On May 13, 2011, "Breathe Again" appeared in the Smallville series finale for the wedding of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Bareilles was added in the third season of the NBC television series The Sing-Off as a celebrity judge, alongside Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. Bareilles also guest-starred on Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures.

Indiana State Fair stage collapse[link]

On August 13, 2011, the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand stage at the Indiana State Fair collapsed right after Bareilles finished performing as the opening act for Sugarland. She was uninjured, tweeting "I'm speechless and feel so helpless; my heart aches for the lives lost." Seven people died, and more than 45 were injured in the collapse.^[24]

[edit] 2012–present: A Trace of Sun and Once Upon Another Time EP

Soon after joining The Sing-Off, Bareilles announced she was in the process of recording a new EP with co-star Ben Folds producing it. She also collaborated with fellow singer songwriters Greg Laswell and Jon McLaughlin on their new singles in February. In March, she will release A Trace of Sun a documentary of her time volunteering in Japan after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Her EP, Once Upon Another Time, was released on May 22 and contained 5 new recordings. The first single from the EP, "Stay" was released on April 21, 2012 on 7" vinyl, exclusive to Record Store Day participants with a vinyl-only B-side "Beautiful Girl".

Influences and musical style[link]

Bareilles' vocal range registers from contralto to mezzo-soprano, and is often compared to artists such as Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Billy Joel,^[25] due to her vocal ability and incorporation of piano in her music.

Her sound is described as "slightly edgy, stompy piano-based pop rock" that incorporates jazz and soul,^[26] with Bareilles finding inspiration from singers such as Etta James and Sam Cooke.^[27] She is often praised for her songwriting abilities, with critics stating she "conveys vulnerability and wisdom in lyrics that speak honestly about relationships from a woman's point of view", and that her "writing voice is uniquely her own."^[25]

Bareilles tours with regular band members Javier Dunn (guitar and vocals),^[28] Daniel Rhine (bass)^[29] and Joshua Day (percussion and vocals).^[30] Other musicians who have toured with her as part of her band include Eric Robinson (guitar and keys),^[31] Holly Conlan (backing vocals), and Philip Krohnengold (guitar and keys).^[32]

Collaborations with other artists[link]

In December 2008, a single with Ingrid Michaelson titled "Winter Song" was released off the compilation The Hotel Cafe Presents Winter Songs. The two performed it on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and an animated video was released. In December 2011, "Winter Song" reached number 2 on the Irish Singles Chart.^[33] She also recorded a song "Come Home," a duet with OneRepublic, which was released on iTunes on July 14, 2009.

Bareilles performed with many other singers on the season 3 finale of 30 Rock, alongside Mary J. Blige, Rachael Yamagata, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones and Elvis Costello. She also appeared with Weezer on Jimmy Kimmel Live and AOL Sessions guest performing "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" as well for a special performance on YouTube.

She has performed for the First Family numerous times. Bareilles was first invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to play at the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh in September 2009. Here she performed songs for the First Ladies of 20 nations and afterward dined with Michelle Obama. The Obamas again invited her to perform at the Easter Egg Roll in 2010. On October 20, 2010, it was announced that Bareilles would open for President Obama at a Las Vegas rally for the Democratic midterm elections.^[34] In December, Bareilles and fellow singer Ingrid Michaelson performed "Winter Song" for the Obamas and many spectators at the National Christmas Tree Lighting.^[35]

In December 2010, Bareilles appeared with The Backbeats on the season finale of The Sing-Off. She performed the duet "Love Won't Let You Get Away" with Seth MacFarlane on his debut studio album Music Is Better Than Words, and reunited to perform the song with him at Club Nokia on March 26, 2011.

Bareilles is featured on the first single from Jon McLaughlin's fourth studio effort Promising Promises, "Summer Is Over". The track was released in January 2012.
