Major Anthony Peter Roylance "Tony" Rolt, MC & Bar, (16 October 1918 – 6 February 2008)^[1] was a British racing driver, soldier and engineer. He won the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans and participated in three Formula One World Championship Grands Prix without scoring a championship point. He was the longest surviving participant of the first ever World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1950^[2].

Early life[link]

Rolt was born in Bordon, Hampshire, the fourth child of Brigadier Stuart Rolt, and educated at Eton College. After a brief pre-war career as a racing driver, he entered the Sandhurst Military Academy and in 1939 received a commission in the Rifle Brigade.

World War II[link]

During the Second World War, Rolt was a lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade and in 1940 was awarded the Military Cross during the defence of Calais. He was then taken prisoner of war during the fall of France, and after persistent escape attempts was sent to Oflag IV-C in Colditz Castle, where he was involved in the audacious glider escape plan.^[3] For his determined escape attempts, Rolt was awarded a Bar to his Military Cross.

After the war Rolt resigned his commission with the rank of Major to develop advanced automotive technologies.^[4]

Racing career[link]

Tony Rolt competed in three Formula One races, the British Grands Prix of 1950, 53 & 55, but all three outings ended in retirement. At the 1950 British Grand Prix, the first-ever round of the F1 World Championship, he started 10th on the grid in an ERA that had been qualified by Peter Walker, but the gearbox failed after four laps. In the 1953 race, again starting 10th, a half shaft on his Connaught failed after 70 laps. He shared a drive with Peter Walker in 1955, the last F1 outing for both drivers: their Connaught started 14th and retired with transmission trouble after 18 laps.

Rolt competed in every 24 Hours of Le Mans race from 1949 to 1955, famously winning the 1953 event in a Jaguar C-Type shared with Duncan Hamilton.

He was the last surviving driver from the inaugural World Championship Grand Prix held at Silverstone; also the last pre-World War II member of the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC), having been elected in 1936.^[5]

He retired from racing in 1955 and concentrated on his work with Ferguson Research Ltd., the successor to the partnership he formed with racing driver and Riley tuner Freddie Dixon after the war. In 1971 he founded FF Developments.

He was instrumental in the development of early four wheel drive systems for racing cars; also for production cars such as the Jensen FF.

Hayden Wayne (born March 2, 1949) is a modern American composer and librettist. Due to his background in popular music, his style is an amalgamation of classical music influenced by popular idioms. Wayne also has several film scores and award-winning commercials for television to his credit.

Biography[link]

Hayden Wayne (born 3/2/49) (composer/librettist) may be one of the first in his generation to take the rare route through pop/rock music's highest levels to reach where he is today. He began playing piano at the age of four and played tenor drum in the orchestra pit of The King and I at the age of five which his father was conducting, and performed his first composition in concert at the age of eleven. He won a second prize medal for piano solo from the New York State Music Awards at fifteen. The '70s saw him performing in the pop/rock world for such major-label backed bands as Man (CBS Records) and Jobriath (Elektra Records). He toured with the likes of Sly Stone, the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page, Billy Joel, Gordon Lightfoot, Gladys Knight and the Fifth Dimension. Eventually, tired of touring, he went back to composing. In his unique position - with classical training and a wealth of pop/rock experience - he began experimenting with a synthesis of various genres/styles.

As a composer, in 1983 Mr. Wayne opened a new theater for the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles with his metaphorical circus Wire, won $10,000 USD as national first place in 1987 from the National Institute for Music Theater with Neon (A Street Opera) . In 2002, NEON won a 25,000 DM prize in the International Prague Opera Competition. He was commissioned to write In Memoriam: A Celebration, by the Interfaith Concert of Holocaust Remembrance, which premiered at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York in 1993. Subsequently linked with Sinfonietta No. 1: The Klezmer and An Elegy Into Madness, specifically commissioned for the Fiftieth Anniversary of Israel, and titled A Triptych, had its world première at Mandel Hall, the University of Chicago in January 1998. In February 1995, his Symphony #4-FUNK had its world premiere at the Janacek Theatre in Brno, The Czech Republic. It sold out in one week seven months in advance. He also has several film scores and award-winning commercials for television to his credit.

To date, Mr. Wayne has written over four hundred compositions including: The Symphony of Friends, the ballet Cirque de la Lune, Dracula (Opera Erotica), Piano Concerto #1 (The Rock "n' Roll) and Cello Concerto #1 which are paired as a diptych: Sinfonietta #2 (It's a Boy) and #3 (The Emerald); Violin-Piano Sonata (The "Kraft"); The Symphonic Trilogy: #2-REGGAE, #3-HEAVY METAL, #4-FUNK; and SYMPHONY #5 Africa [A Tone Poem] (all recorded by the State Philharmonic of Brno, on New Millennium Records); the choral symphony SYMPHONY #6-THE GIFT; SYMPHONY #7-CELESTIAL DANCES and SYMPHONY #8-1421; the string quartets: The Rosenberger Variations and The Romantic, The Nuzerov Quartets 3, 4 and 5, Nuzerov Quartets 6,7 & 8, and Nuzerov Quartets 9 & 10 performed by the Wallinger String Quartet; Five Dances For Cello and Piano/Piano Quintet #1 (all available on New Millennium Records), and hundreds of songs in various eclectic styles.
