Hani Sewilam Delivers First Provost's Lecture on Sustainability in Egypt- Part 1
Kicking off this year's Provost Lecture Series, Hani Sewilam, professor of sustainable development and water resources management, delivered a lecture titled "Together Towards Sustainable Development" on Sunday, October 16 at 3:30 pm in Moataz Al Alfi Hall. Sewilam addressed the sustainability challenge as a problem plaguing not only AUC, but all of Egypt. "Currently Egypt is facing dramatic population growth coupled with unsustainable development activities," he said. "This unsustainable development did not position Egypt among the industrial or developed countries. It positioned it only as having the highest prevalence of Hepatitis C in the world and 12 million Egyptians living in vast slums."

Kelowna slammed for being unsustainable
For 3 year my videos have been expressing the same sentiment about Kelowna. Growth and development at the expense of the quality of life is not sustainable. An economy based on retirees and tourism is not sustainable (see Florida). Global News Winnipeg... Kelowna is one of the most unsustainable cities in the province as well as in Canada. Former NDP premier Mike Harcourt was the keynote speaker at the BC Studies Conference at UBC Okanagan Thursday night. He says one important element to avoid is urban sprawl, which means more high-rise buildings should be constructed. Harcourt says many people waste space in their houses, waste using their vehicles and waste electricity. Kelowna is guilty of being unsustainable and adds unsustainable cities result in low quality of life for their residents and are not competitive with other communities in attracting jobs and talented workers.

Fabien Cousteau Presents: Bimini - Paradise in Peril
Fabien Cousteau and the Ocean Futures Society present "Paradise in Peril," a stunning documentary about unsustainable development on the tiny islands of Bimini, Bahamas. The Save Bimini Association is made up of a collection of individuals, businesses & organizations dedicated to a sustainable future for the islands of Bimini. Started as a small local group of Biminites, Save Bimini has grown into an international coalition. The Save Bimini Association is not against development interests on Bimini, but rather we seek to ensure that all developments here respect the history, culture & ecology of this precious island chain. We recognize that people from around the world come to Bimini for what it is, not for what developers wish it would be. Bimini's clear waters, abundant marine life, pristine landscape & friendly locals are what have made these islands an inspiration for so many throughout the years. It is exactly these things that are now being threatened. Through petitions, rallies, protests, and countless meetings we have tried to make our voice heard in regards to the development projects that threaten this island. We are now asking for you to join us in our effort. www.SaveBimini.org

Biodiversity Mainstreaming If It Doesn't Fit, Get A Bigger Hammer
pollutioncontrol.free-health-care.info Biodiversity Mainstreaming If It Doesn't Fit, Get A Bigger Hammer The purpose of biodiversity maainstreaming is to have biodiversity principles included at every stage of the planning of projects by businesses and governments. The idea is to incorporate biodiversity considerations into all human activities. implementing biodiversity There are currently biodiversity mainstreaming projects going on in many parts of the world, which are focused on increasing involvement in implementing biodiversity principles in an effort to preserve the remaining natural resources. Part of biodiversity Part of biodiversity mainstreaming involves working with all sectors of a government in order to have them be aware of biodiversity issues, and make sure that biodiversity issues are not overlooked in the resolution of the problems each sector deals with. Agencies concerned with agriculture Agencies concerned with agriculture, public health, science and technology, the environment, and forests, fisheries and water resources are often the first agencies that biodiversity reformers and conservationists turn to during the planning of civic projects, with other sectors, such as transportation, energy, and mining being brought aboard as the project develops. As you can imagine, getting consensus from all these groups is not an easy task. biodiversity mainstreaming Another part of biodiversity mainstreaming is making the concept appealing to the very people ...

China's demolition plan for Uyghur city Kashgar
www.savekashgar.com Estbalished in May 2009, the Save Kashgar Campaign is an historical awareness campaign to save the ancient central Asian silk road city from demolition. Kashgar, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China is home to several million Uyghurs (pronounced WEE-gur) who are a Turkic-speaking Muslim people. Their ancient 2000 year old city has come under increasing attack by the Beijing government that has begun demolishing the old city structures in favour of modern buildings. Although the historical city has withstood 2000 years of wars, earthquakes and other natural disasters, the Chinese government has been systemically demolishing the old city in order to "develop" it. While we are not against development per se, we are against unsustainable development that causes homelessness, displacement and destruction of historical monuments. The Save Kashgar Campaign demands the United Nations (UNESCO) should award Kashgar World Heritage Site status immediately. The soul of this priceless historical city is being erased systematically. Kashgar's demolition is not only a loss for Uyghur culture, but for China and the entire world. It is imperative that the UN award Kashgar World Heritage Site Status immediately to protect it from further destruction. This will ensure that ancient structures are not removed but are strengthened. Please join our campaign and raise awareness. Help Kashgaris save their city!

TEDxMonterey - Gary Cline - Bristol Bay: Through the Heart of a Local Fisherman
Gary is a life-long Alaskan resident, commercial fishermen, and subsistence harvester. He was raised in the remote region of Bristol Bay where his moral beliefs were shaped around the Yupik culture. Living off the land -- the subsistence way of life -- was the foundation of his family's traditions that was passed on for generations with a focus on taking only what you need, respecting the environment, and sharing with others. His Yupik name is Yassicuar, which means "little box". He was named after a respected elder from the village of Koliganek who was responsible for the little box of treasure used for tithes and offerings for the Russian Orthodox Church. At a young age, his parents and elders taught him traditional knowledge of the ecology and the importance of their renewable resources. As a result, respect for the environment became instilled in his daily routines. Gary is the Permanent Protection Coordinator for Nunamta Aulukestai (Caretakers of Our Lands); a non-profit organization made up of nine village corporations and their respective Tribes in Bristol Bay that got together to develop, promote, and implement land use management policies to provide a sustainable base for community development and to sustain their cultural beliefs. Bristol Bay hosts the largest salmon runs on the planet and is arguably one of the best managed fisheries. He received a bachelor's degree in International Business from Fort Lewis College and works to protect the fisheries of Bristol ...

Ruining Pakistan's Capital Islamabad
The past 5 years have seen massive unsustainable 'development' in Islamabad. This has been spearheaded by its municipality, with the backing of the bureaucracy and military high-ups. No public input is sought or accepted. The character of the city has changed through ill-thought-out projects that have ruined the environment of the city and made it unmanageable. Pakistan generally lacks the organizational and management skills to handle large cities and projects effectively, but one continues to see the proliferation of mega-projects up and down the country. From such adventures, various interest groups siphon off funds leaving the cities poorer for everyone, and more so for the majority who are financially poor. The idea that "small is beautiful" is alien to city planners, top government functionaries and the military. The video, from the Dawn News channel's program "The Big Digit", highlights some of the disasters specific to Islamabad but with relevance to most projects, old and new, in Pakistan and developing countries.
