Antebellum architecture (meaning "prewar", from the Latin ante, "before", and bellum, "war") is the neoclassical architectural style characteristic of the 19th-century Southern United States, especially the Deep South, from after the birth of the United States with the American Revolution, to the start of the American Civil War. Antebellum architecture is especially characterized by Georgian, Neo-classical, and Greek Revival style plantation homes and mansions.
The features associated with antebellum architecture were introduced by people of British descent who settled in the Southern states during the colonial period and in U.S. territories after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in Northern Europe and the United States. A product of Hellenism, it may be looked upon as the last phase in the development of Neoclassical architecture. The term was first used by Charles Robert Cockerell in a lecture he gave as Professor of Architecture to the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1842.
With a newfound access to Greece, archaeologist-architects of the period studied the Doric and Ionic orders, examples of which can be found in Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Finland,(where the assembly of Greek buildings in Helsinki city centre is particularly notable) and United States. Yet in each country it touched, the style was looked on as the expression of local nationalism and civic virtue, especially in Germany and the United States, where the idiom was regarded as being free from ecclesiastical and aristocratic associations.
The taste for all things Greek in furniture and interior design was at its peak by the beginning of the 19th century, when the designs of Thomas Hope had influenced a number of decorative styles known variously as Neoclassical, Empire, Russian Empire, and British Regency. Greek Revival architecture took a different course in a number of countries, lasting until the Civil War in America (1860s) and even later in Scotland. The style was also exported to Greece under the first two (German and Danish) kings of the newly independent nation.

A look at the three Souths and the different levels of Southern society in the Antebellum period. An explanation for why the cotton gin reinvigorated cotton and slavery in the South.
Pierre Repooc Productions - URL:http://www.youtube.com/c/PierreRepooc Natchez was established in 1716 by French colonists but reached the zenith of its growth in the mid 1800's due to its strategic position along the Mississippi River and the advent of steamboats. The Antebellum Architecture from before the Civil War was the result of wealthy Southern planters, who owned vast tracts of land in the surrounding lowlands of Mississippi and Louisiana, building mansions to match their ambitions in a more cultured Natchez of the day.
In 1840 Gainesville was the third largest town in the state of Alabama, with a population of over 4,000. It had one of the first banks in the state that issued currency and was a major port, shipping 6,000 bales of cotton to Mobile each year by steamboats on the Tombigbee River. Many of the homes from Gainesville's "boom" days are still standing and though some have been restored, many, sadly, are falling into ruin. If you are in or near Sumter Co., AL, a visit to this little town of 220 is well worth the trip. It is truly a visit to the past...a fading, but still tangible memory of the antebellum South.
