Politico is an American political journalism organization based in Arlington, Virginia, that distributes its content via television, the Internet, newspaper, and radio. Its coverage of Washington, D.C., includes the U.S. Congress, lobbying, media and the Presidency.^[2] It was a sponsor of the 2008 Republican Presidential candidates debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on May 3, 2007, the 2008 Democratic Presidential candidates debate at the Kodak Theater on January 31, 2008, and the 2012 Republican Presidential candidates debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on September 7, 2011.

John F. Harris and Jim VandeHei left The Washington Post to become Politico's editor-in-chief and executive editor, respectively, launching the newspaper on January 23, 2007. Frederick J. Ryan Jr., former assistant to President Ronald Reagan,^[3] is president and chief executive officer.^[4]

Ownership, distribution and content[link]

Politico is owned by Allbritton Communications, which owns television stations in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, all affiliated with the Disney-owned ABC network.

The newspaper has a circulation of approximately 32,000,^[5] distributed for free on Capitol Hill and elsewhere in Washington, D.C.^[2] The newspaper prints up to five issues a week while Congress is in session, and sometimes publishes one issue a week when Congress is in recess.^[6] It carries advertising, including full-page ads from trade associations and a large help-wanted section listing Washington political jobs.

Politico is a partner with several news outlets that co-report and distribute its video, print, and audio content. Partners include CBS News,^[7] Allbritton Communications's ABC station WJLA and cable channel NewsChannel 8,^[8] radio station WTOP-FM,^[9] and Yahoo! News election coverage.

Journalists covering political campaigns for Politico carry a video camera to each assignment,^[8] and journalists are encouraged to promote their work elsewhere.^[9] Though Politico seeks to break the traditional journalism mold, it expects to initially make much of its money from Washington D.C.–focused newspaper advertising.^[10] Among the reporters who have worked for Politico have been Mike Allen, Ben Smith, Jonathan Martin, Josh Gerstein, Glenn Thrush, John Bresnehan, Darren Goode, Carrie Budoff Brown, Manu Raju, Maggie Haberman, Dylan Byers, Dave Levinthal, Kenneth P. Vogel, Anna Palmer, Jonathan Allen, Scott Wong, Reid Epstein, Alex Burns, Ben White, James Hohmann and Keach Hagey.^[11] In 2010, Politico added its first two opinion columnists, Michael Kinsley and Joe Scarborough.^[12]

After the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America accused Politico of having a "Republican tilt", Politico's Ben Smith answered: "Media Matters has a point: ...that Bush's public endorsement made us seem too close to the White House. That was clearly a favor from the president to us (albeit a small one), and felt to me like one of those clubby Beltway moments that make the insiders feel important and the outsiders feel (accurately) like outsiders." The other primary editors disagreed with the general accusation for a variety of reasons, and some pointed to accusations of a liberal bias from the other side of the political spectrum.^[13]

In September 2008, The New York Times reported that Politico would expand its operations following the 2008 presidential election: "after Election Day, [Politico] will add reporters, editors, Web engineers and other employees; expand circulation of its newspaper edition in Washington; and print more often."^[14]

A 2009 profile of the organization in Vanity Fair said Politico had an editorial staff of 75 and a total staff of 100. Its newspaper circulation is around 32,000; and as of summer 2009, its web traffic was around 6.7 million unique visitors per month. This is fewer than the 11 million it had during the high point of the campaign, but most political news outlets have lower traffic outside election years. As of July 2009, it was expected to have annual revenue of around $15 million, primarily from the printed product, enough for the publication to remain financially solvent.^[5]

Robert Frederick Drinan, S.J. (November 15, 1920 – January 28, 2007) was a Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, lawyer, human rights activist, and Democratic U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. He was also a law professor at Georgetown University Law Center for the last twenty-six years of his life.

Education and legal career[link]

Drinan grew up in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, the son of Ann Mary (Flanagan) and James John Drinan.^[1] He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1938. He received a B.A. and an M.A. from Boston College in 1942 and joined the Society of Jesus the same year; he was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1953. He received an LL.M. and LL.B. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1950, and a doctorate in theology from Gregorian University in Rome in 1954, in addition to receiving 21 honorary degrees throughout his life.

He studied in Florence for two years before returning to Boston, where he was admitted to the bar in 1956. He served as dean of the Boston College Law School from 1956 until 1970, during which time he also taught as a professor of family law and church-state relations. During this period he was also a visiting professor at other schools including the University of Texas School of Law, and served on several Massachusetts state commissions convened to study legal issues such as judicial salaries and lawyer conflicts of interest.

Service in Congress[link]

In 1970, Drinan sought a seat in Congress on an anti-Vietnam War platform, narrowly defeating longtime Representative Philip J. Philbin, who was serving on the House Armed Services Committee, in the Democratic primary. Drinan went on to win election to the House of Representatives, and was re-elected four times, serving from 1971 until 1981. He was the first of two Roman Catholic priests (the other being Robert John Cornell of Wisconsin) to serve as a voting member of Congress.^[2][3] Drinan sat on various House committees, and served as the chair of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice of the House Judiciary Committee. He was also a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention.

Drinan was the first member of Congress, in July 1973, to introduce a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Richard Nixon, though not for the Watergate Scandal that ultimately ended Nixon's presidency. Drinan believed that Nixon's secret bombing of Cambodia was illegal, and as such, constituted a "high crime and misdemeanor". However, the Judiciary Committee voted 21 to 12 against including that charge among the articles of impeachment that were eventually approved and reported out to the full House of Representatives. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Drinan played an integral role in the Congressional investigation of Nixon Administration misdeeds and crimes.

Throughout Drinan's political career, his consistent support of abortion rights drew significant opposition from Church leaders, who had also repeatedly requested that he not hold political office in the first place.^[2][4] Drinan attempted to reconcile his position with official Church doctrine by stating that while he was personally opposed to abortion, considering it "virtual infanticide,"^[5] its legality was a separate issue from its morality. This argument failed to satisfy his critics. According to the Wall Street Journal, Drinan played a key role in the pro-choice platform becoming a common stance with politicians in the Kennedy family.^[6]

In 1980, Pope John Paul II unequivocally demanded that all priests withdraw from electoral politics. Drinan complied and did not seek reelection.^[2] "'It is just unthinkable,' he said of the idea of renouncing the priesthood to stay in office. 'I am proud and honored to be a priest and a Jesuit. As a person of faith I must believe that there is work for me to do which somehow will be more important than the work I am required to leave.'"^[7]

Following his death, members of Congress honored Drinan's memory with a moment of silence on the House floor on January 29, 2007.

Teaching, writing, and later life[link]

Drinan taught at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. from 1981 to 2007, where his academic work and classes focused on legal ethics and international human rights. He privately sponsored human rights missions to countries such as Chile, the Philippines, El Salvador, and Vietnam. In 1987, he founded the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics. He regularly contributed to law reviews and journals, and authored several books, including The Mobilization of Shame: A World View of Human Rights, published by Yale University Press in 2001.

Drinan continued to be a vocal supporter of abortion rights, much to the ire of the Catholic Church, and notably spoke out in support of President Bill Clinton's veto of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in 1996.^[8] In his weekly column for the Catholic New York,^[9] Cardinal John O'Connor sharply denounced Drinan. "You could have raised your voice for life; you raised it for death," the cardinal wrote, "Hardly the role of a lawyer. Surely not the role of a priest."

Drinan died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure on January 28, 2007 in Washington, D.C.^[10]

Associations and awards[link]

Drinan served as a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates until his death and was chair of the ABA Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities. In 2004, Drinan received the ABA Medal, the organization's highest honor for distinguished service in law. On May 10, 2006, Drinan was presented the Distinguished Service Award by then Speaker Dennis Hastert and then Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on behalf of the House of Representatives.

Drinan served on the Board of Directors of People for the American Way, the International League for Human Rights, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, the International Labor Rights Fund, Americans for Democratic Action, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. For many years he was chairman on PeacePAC, a division of Council for a Livable World, and a Director of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.

The College Democrats of Boston College annually present an award in honor of Drinan to prominent Catholic Democratic figures. Past awardees include John Kerry, Donna Brazile, and Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray. This year's award recipient is Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy.

James Kotecki (born 23 October 1985 in Syracuse, New York) is an American video blogger, online commentator, and self-described "political geek" who turned into a YouTube celebrity during the United States presidential election in 2008.^[1][2]

Education and Rise to Fame[link]

James graduated from Raleigh Charter High School, then magna cum laude from Georgetown University in May 2007 with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service.

As a senior student at Georgetown, James spent his spare time in his dormitory, creating videos critiquing the 2008 presidential campaign candidates, and subsequently posting them on YouTube.^[3]

His witty and slightly cynical remarks and occasional rapping and playing the guitar in his videos had caught the attention of many people including politicians who agreed to appear in his dormitory for an interview;^[1][4] namely, Mike Gravel, former Democratic United States Senator from Alaska and a candidate in the 2008 presidential election, and Ron Paul, Republican Congressman for the State of Texas.^[3][5] James was also able to interview Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.^[6]

James’ video commentaries also attracted The Politico and offered him full-time employment as a video blogger.^[7] At The Politico, James wrote, produced and hosted his own online video series called KoteckiTV.^[8]

James Kotecki now does public policy research and analysis for The Cypress Group.

Helena Andrews (born October 28, 1980) is an author, journalist and pop culture critic. Her first book, Bitch is the New Black, will be published by HarperCollins in June 2010.^[1] Bitch is the New Black is a collection of essays chronicling her experiences as a single Black female in Washington, DC. First conceptualized as a daily blog documenting the sad state of dating among educated African Americans, Bitch is the New Black evolved to describe all the influences and impacts on the modern Black woman. Helena is currently writing a screenplay for the movie version of the book. The film rights have been optioned by "Grey's Anatomy" creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who will serve as executive producer for the project.^[2]

In a interview with The Root^[3] she discussed the upcoming book:

“Despite the fact that the most visible woman in the United States is black, popular culture still hasn't moved past the only adjective apparently meant to describe us: 'strong'. 'Bitch' will hopefully function as a sort of dictionary (abridged, of course), providing a new vocabulary for black women. Almost automatically I'd describe myself as strong, but I'm also flawed, tired, sexy, depressed, frightened, naïve, hilarious, greedy and, of course, bitchy. In 16 essays, 'Bitch' gives credence to each one of my faces - the secret sides every woman often keeps hidden.”

Helena began work in publishing as an intern at O, the Oprah Magazine in 2002. After leaving O, she worked brief stints at Seventeen Magazine, Domino Magazine and Rap Up Magazine. After a year pursuing a master's degree from Northwestern University in 2005, Helena worked as a news assistant in the Washington bureau of the New York Times.^[4] In 2006 she became a staff writer for the online political magazine Politico.com where she covered the cultural goings on of Capitol Hill.^[5] Helena has appeared on CNN, Inside Edition, Fox News and XM Radio. Currently, she is a regular contributor to Slate’s TheRoot.com ^[6][7] and AOL’s PoliticsDaily.com ^[8]

Helena graduated from Columbia University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing. At Columbia Helena joined the Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She earned a master's degree in print journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 2005.

Know One, also known as MC Know One, is a New Orleans based lyricist and graphic designer. Born Roan Smith in Meadville, PA to an artist mother & musician father, Know One was raised in the arts. After attending college at the Pittsburgh Art Institute, & a brief stint at Edinboro University to study graphic design, he moved to New Orleans and started an indie Hip-Hop label with other like-minded artists called Media Darling Records. As a flagship artist of the Hip-Hop collective, Know One served as a member of the groups The Blank Space with producer DamNathan, 3 Lucky Stiffs with Rapper Bionik Brown & producer DJ Quickie Mart, & Space God which was the teaming of the groups The Blank Space & God Awful. The Label was doing very well until Hurricane Katrina attacked New Orleans in August 2005. Music

The Blank Space (2002) The Blank Space is a very experimental project produced by Damnathan with Know One as the primary vocalist. Only 100 copies were made for the purpose of getting their foot in the door of the underground Hip-Hop scene in New Orleans.

The Humid Sounds of Media Darling Records (2004)
In 2004 Media Darling Records released an LP consisting of songs from all the artists on the label. Know One contributed to 7 tracks on the album which went on to win an Off Beat award for best Hip-Hop album of the year and was named Best Rap album in Louisiana by Where Y'at Magazine.

3 Lucky Stiffs Mix Tape (2004)
This mix tape was recorded the summer of 2004 in one day. The group had not finished their LP just yet and had nothing to promote for their upcoming summer tour, so they all met up at Quickie Marts recording studio, The Soulhole, & recorded their first and only mix tape.

Know One's Home (2007)
After Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans, many of the members of Media Darling Records left the city for good. Know One took a job refurbishing damaged homes for displaced families and began penning his first solo album. This project would be called "Know One's Home". This 23 track LP would become what is now considered Know One's magnum opus. Dedicated to New Orleans and the years he's lived there, this album uses Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, R&B, & break beats to create a sound that is both groundbreaking & timeless. This album includes appearances from New Orleans heavy hitters like Galactic, Bionik Brown, Quickie Mart, Impulss, & more. The breakout single on the album was called "My Back In The Day Song", a track dedicated to his childhood in Meadville, PA. The single was later used by McDonald's in a commercial for its sweet iced tea.

3 Lucky Stiffs - Live at the Soulhole (2010)
This album is a collection of songs meant to be on the 3 Lucky stiffs LP. Recorded between 2004 and 2006 these songs were the result of three musicians (DJ Quickie Mart, Bionik Brown, & Know One) from vastly different backgrounds coming together in the city of New Orleans to form a super group of sorts. The group gained national notoriety after the recording of their very first song "Q&A". They then got to work on writing and recording a full LP. Before they could finish, Hurricane Katrina struck scattering the group to different cities. They picked up recording again but had to do it long distance. These sessions only yielded one song called "Back Again". Tragically, Bionik Brown died in 2008 as the result of a car accident with a drunk driver. His friends recorded a tribute song available only on this album. 3 Lucky Stiffs: Live at The Soulhole is dedicated to the memory of Nathan "Bionik Brown" Woods. We continue to make music in your name.

My Back In The Day Song - Remix EP (2010)
This was the first song written for his first solo album, "Know One's Home". Though it's the most recognized song from the album, it's not the only version of the song out there. Over the years the song has been re-recorded as a jazz/funk fusion tune, an extended a cappella version with Know One singing all the instruments, and a remix done for a McDonald's sweet tea commercial. Previously unreleased, all the songs are now available on "My Back In The Day Song - Remix EP". Featuring Kevin O'Day of Iris May Tango, Kelly Carlyle, Able Chris, & Eduardo Tozato.

Sound Track - The Ballad Of Know One & DamNathan (2011)
Know One & DamNathan have been making music together since their 2002 release 'The Blank Space'. Their latest release 'Sound Track- The Ballad Of Know One & DamNathan' is a genre-crossing meld of heavy break beats, machine gun raps, and melodic, quiet moments that not only tie it all together but also add strong dynamics to the tunes rarely found on modern popular music. The idea was to take the extremes of what the two artists do musically and intertwine them with hopes of creating something truly unique. This album had been pieced together over nearly five years with the first of the songs being recorded while Nathan was in Los Angeles studying film and Know One was in New Orleans working on his first solo project 'Know One's Home'. Once DamNathan moved back to New Orleans the project began to build steam with Able Chris, one time member of the group, contributing to three songs on the project. Other guests include singer songwriter Rita LaGrange, NOLA Hip-Hop staple Impulss, multi-instrumentalist Kelly Carlyle & percussionist Anthony Cuccia of The Other Planets, turntable master Quickie Mart, & guitar great Timothy K. Smith in his final performance ever recorded before his sudden passing in 2009. As the album began to take shape, unintentional themes of second chances, DeJa Vu, time, and circular thinking, began to emerge in the subject matter of the songs. Once this pattern was recognized, the boys capitalized on it making the album not only an epic audio experience, but a cerebral experience as well. To put the finishing touches on the album, the two turned to music virtuoso Jim Nordstrom of Waterhouse Recording to mix & master the project creating perhaps the most genre bending piece of music to emerge from New Orleans in quite some time.
