Jack Sherman (guitarist)

Jack Sherman (born January 18, 1956) is a guitarist best known as a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing on their debut album. Sherman joined the Chili Peppers in December 1983 replacing founding member, Hillel Slovak. Sherman would remain with the band for their first tour in 1984 to support the release of the first album. He co-composed material on the debut album as well as songs on the follow-up record, Freaky Styley. Slovak returned to the band, replacing Sherman in early 1985.

Jack Sherman (footballer)

Jack Sherman (23 September 1900 – 14 October 1969) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and represented Footscray in its first official VFL match in 1925.

After his one and only season with Footscray, Sherman went on to play with the Preston, Maffra, Traralgon and Stratford Football Clubs and represented the Gippsland League against The Wimmera.

Jack is the brother of Ted Sherman and Bill Sherman.

Sherman–Morrison formula

In mathematics, in particular linear algebra, the Sherman–Morrison formula, named after Jack Sherman and Winifred J. Morrison, computes the inverse of the sum of an invertible matrix and the outer product, , of vectors and . The Sherman–Morrison formula is a special case of the Woodbury formula. Though named after Sherman and Morrison, it appeared already in earlier publications.

Application

If the inverse of is already known, the formula provides a numerically cheap way to compute the inverse of corrected by the matrix (depending on the point of view, the correction may be seen as a perturbation or as a rank-1 update). The computation is relatively cheap because the inverse of does not have to be computed from scratch (which in general is expensive), but can be computed by correcting (or perturbing) .
