Health Benefits for Chattanooga city employees in domestic partnerships is taking center stage again tonight. That's the topic for tonight's discussion at Westview Elementary. The driving force behind it is a tea party organization called Citizens for Government Accountability and Transparency. While the forum was designed specifically for this domestic partnership benefits ordinance, the event organizer says it has become a solid jumping off point for a larger project. They're spearheading a petition to put the issue up for a city-wide vote.First, let's rehash who voted for and against the ordinance that extends health benefits to Chattanooga city employees who are in domestic partnerships which include gay and straight couples.The vote was 5 to 4 - in favor of the ordinance. Moses Freeman, Jerry Mitchell, Carol Berz, Yusuf Hakeem, and Chris Anderson all voted yes to the ordinance Tuesday night.Against the idea was Chip Henderson, Larry Grohn, Russell Gilbert, and Ken Smith. As a side note, the Citizens for Government Accountability and Transparency endorsed all of 4 of these candidates.With that in mind, here's who is attending the forum tonight.Larry Grohn and Russell Gilbert have committed, along with Ken Smith and Carol Berz. Councilwoman's Berz's attendance comes as a surprise, since she's the only person who voted in favor of the ordinance who is attending. Those who have declined an invitation include Moses Freeman, Yusuf Hakeem, Chris Anderson, and Jerry Mitchell.Chip Henderson says he's not sure if he's going tonight.We spoke with organizer Mark West earlier today about what he hopes comes from tonight's event. That was the original intent of this forum, to have an open dialogue and see if there's any new information that comes out for either side of this issue that would cause a difference of view.West says that change-maker could be Carol Berz.Also on the agenda tonight, West says he'll bring up a petition that's already in the works. If the controversial ordinance passes, West says he'll be ready with 4500 signatures, which could mean the issue will appear on the ballot next year for a city-wide vote. Chattanooga's City Council voted 5-3 Tuesday night to extend health benefits to domestic partners of city employees. Last week, the controversial issue passed by a 5-4 vote. But that was just the first reading, the final vote happened Tuesday night. Voting in favor of the ordinance was Chris Anderson, Carol Berz, Yusuh Hakeem, Moses Freeman and Jerry Mitchell. Councilperson opposed to the ordinance are Russell Gilbert, Chip Henderson and Ken Smith. Larry Grohn was absent Tuesday. Opposition has already started forming. The Chattanooga Tea Party and others have said they will have a petition drive to push the question to a referendum vote. NewsChannel 9 polled four out of the five yes votes to see if they might change their vote. Chairman Yusuf Hakeem said, At this juncture, I don't see a change in my vote. I think if you look at the facts as I know them, it's in the best interest if the city for us to move forward with this. The ordinance's author, District 7 Councilman Chris Anderson responded, Of course not, I haven't heard anything new in the last week. The opposition is saying the same things they have said for months to oppose this. I am still very firm in my belief that it should pass. District 8 Councilman Moses Freeman also voted in favor. Tuesday night Chattanooga city council members passed a controversial ordinance. They voted in 5-4 favor of giving health benefits to the partners of city employees. Each council member has a unique take on why the city should or shouldn't make this move and they shared their opinions publicly, just before they cast their votes. Many concerns ranged from religious beliefs to monetary costs. While others say they voted for it because it's what their district would have wanted. I believe in democracy. So go for it, says Councilwoman Carol Berz. So that means one hundred percent of the people sitting in this audience had no choice on whether they were born male or female. They also had no choice at all what color skin that they were born. The same cannot be said of all one hundred percent of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual community, says Councilman Larry Grohn. Mayor Andy Berke lives in District two.
