President Joseph Kabila came to power in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2001, taking over from his father, Laurent Kabila, who was assassinated by one of his own child soldier bodyguards.
Joseph Kabila was initially credited with bringing relative peace and reviving the mining of the country's vast mineral reserves.
But conflicts persist and millions of Congolese remain trapped in extreme poverty amid widespread allegations of corruption.
His second and final constitutional mandate ended two years ago, but he stayed in power, amid growing protests and calls for him to step aside.
Congolese are finally due to head to the polls on Sunday to choose a new leader.

Will Kabila step down?
It’s a New Year, but when it comes to politics in Democratic Republic of Congo, there’s nothing new.
President Joseph Kabila has been in power since 2001.
His second term in office officially ended in December 2016, but he’s still there.
And promised elections never happened. Catholics in the capital Kinshasa prayed on Sunday.
They want Kabila to leave…but peaceful demonstrations turned violent.
At least seven people were killed and dozens arrested by security forces.
So what does 2018 hold for the people of DRC?

Plot: Set 18 months where Season 6 of '24' left off, former government agent Jack Bauer is in a self-imposed exile in the fictitious African country of Sangala where he hopes to escape from a U.S. investigation of him for his past methods, and to run from his past. Bauer and Benton must work together to save the dozen or so boys and try to get them out of the country before Juma takes over. Meanwhile in Washington D.C., it is Inauguration Day where the outgoing President Noah Daniels is handing over the presidency to the first female president Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). Hearing about the coup, Daniels wants to evacuate the country before it falls to the rogue general, while Taylor thinks otherwise. Elsewhere, Taylor's son Roger and his fiancée Samantha get wind of information from a friend about suspicious money transactions where he works at a local brokerage firm. But neither he or Roger are aware that a corrupt corporate mogul, Jonas Hodges, is plotting with General Juma to overthrow the government for monetary purposes and will do anything to keep his nefarious plans under wraps.

President Joseph Kabila came to power in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2001, taking over from his father, Laurent Kabila, who was assassinated by one of his own child soldier bodyguards.
Joseph Kabila was initially credited with bringing relative peace and reviving the mining of the country's vast mineral reserves.
But conflicts persist and millions of Congolese remain trapped in extreme poverty amid widespread allegations of corruption.
His second and final constitutional mandate ended two years ago, but he stayed in power, amid growing protests and calls for him to step aside.
Congolese are finally due to head to the polls on Sunday to choose a new leader.

Will Kabila step down?
It’s a New Year, but when it comes to politics in Democratic Republic of Congo, there’s nothing new.
President Joseph Kabila has been in power since 2001.
His second term in office officially ended in December 2016, but he’s still there.
And promised elections never happened. Catholics in the capital Kinshasa prayed on Sunday.
They want Kabila to leave…but peaceful demonstrations turned violent.
At least seven people were killed and dozens arrested by security forces.
So what does 2018 hold for the people of DRC?
