Philip Whalen: Plums, Metaphysics, an Investigation, a Visit, and a Short Funeral Ode
Philip Whalen 1923-2002 On Friday, October 7, 1955 Philip Whalen read at the underground art gallery the Six Gallery in San Francisco. Also reading that night were Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Lamanita, Michael McClure, and Gary Snyder. Conceived by Wally Hedrick, co-founder of the Six Gallery, the reading brought public attention to the West Coast Beats. Though Whalen hung out with beat poets, his own voice differs from theirs. On the Poetry Foundation's biography web page for Whalen, they point out that his work's reverential treatment of the mundane, its self-deprecating humor, and its generally apolitical tone. distinguishes him from other beat poets. Born October 23, 1923 in Portland Oregon, Philip Whalen grew up in the small town of The Dalles, eighty miles south of Portland. He attended Reed College on the GI Bill after serving in the US Army Air Force in WWII. In High School he had read Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. In a 1999 interview he told David Meltzer that after reading Blavatsky ...I went to see where was she coming from? Where is she getting all this stuff? And then I found the actual translations of the actual Vedanta writings. You know the Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita and so on. And that was very satisfying that this system was really there, and it made sense to me.... After release from the army, he visited the Vedanta Society in Portland, but did not attend due to the expense. He was introduced to DT Suzuki's books lent to him by his roommate ...

From Poems of Leslie Scalapino
Leslie Scalapino (1944-2010) "The camera lens of writing is the split between oneself and reality. Which one sees first -- view of dying and life- is inside, looking out into untroubled 'experience.'" -Leslie Scalapino(1) Born in Santa Barbara, California July 25, 1944, Leslie Scalapino, one of 3 daughters of Robert and Dee Scalapino, traveled in Asia, Africa, and Europe growing up. Her father founded UC Berkeley's Institute for Asian Studies. In 1969 She earned her MA From the University of California at Berkeley. She studied Buddhist philosophy throughout her life, and the ideas of Buddhism influenced her work. On Poets.org, Lyn Hejinian writes that two observations of Buddhist philosophy stand out in Scalapino's work: that "pain and suffering are ubiquitous," and that "empirical reality is solely phenomenal- a matter of appearances...." The selections I read are good examples of this insight. Though sometimes related with the West Coast Language poets, Scalapino had close ties to Beat poets. She was a friend of Philip Whalen, and edited the Collected Poems of Philip Whalen (2007.) She also collaborated with visual artists, musicians, dancers and other writers like Hejinian. But Lyn Hejinian writes that Scalapino's voice was unique saying, "She belonged to no school." Leslie Scalapino founded O Books in 1986, a publisher of young and emerging poets as well as established and experimental writers. During her life she published thirty titles and has three titles that will ...

5 Poems by kenneth Rexroth
Kenneth Rexroth (1905-1982) "...Love [is the] key to truly realizing one's existence." Kenneth Rexroth (1) Born in South Bend, Indiana December 22, 1905, Kenneth Rexroth's mother died in 1916. His father died in 1918. His mother had home schooled him. His father was a pharmaceutical salesperson, and drank heavily. Rexroth moved in with his aunt after his parent's deaths. He began publishing when he was fifteen. After being expelled from High School, Kenneth Rexroth educated himself by attending literary salons. He hitchhiked across the country at nineteen working odd jobs: he worked as a reporter, a soda jerk, a wrestler, a clerk and as a forest service trail hand. He explored Mexico and South America and then spent a week in Paris where he met avant-garde artists including Tristan Tzara. He began corresponding with Ezra Pound George Oppen and Louis Zukofsky in the 1930's. In the 1940's Rexroth was promoting other poets on his radio program including LeRoi Jones, Philip Whalen and Denise Levertov. Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder were some of the poets who attended a weekly salon he hosted during these years. These weekly meetings set the ground for the San Francisco renaissance. He registered as a conscientious objector during World War II, and served as a psychiatric orderly. He also helped Japanese American internees. (2) Rexroth emceed the Six Gallery reading on October 7, 1955 where Ginsberg read "Howl." After, he was a defense witness at Ginsberg's ...

Magda Cregg at the Grand Opening of the Beat Museum - Sept. 27th, 2006
Magda Cregg, partner of Lew Welch (one of my personal favourites of the Beat Generation). Cregg edited a great tribute/homage book to Lew Welch called "Hey Lew", which I highly recommend. please check out these links: en.wikipedia.org www.angelfire.com www.beatmuseum.org en.wikipedia.org visit the BEAT MUSEUM www.thebeatmuseum.org PS: Once again, sorry for the horrible camera work. The place was bumper car busy, all night being rubbed up against, knocked, etc... & again, I had had a few drinks earlier, hence the unsteady hand held camera work. That night she was the person I most wanted to talk w/. & I did just that. I then asked her to sign my copy of "Hey Lew"
