During the 9th century, two brothers named Methodius and Cyril grew up in Thessalonica as sons of a prominent Christian family. Because many Slavic people settled in Thessalonica, the brothers were familiar with the Slavic language from the region of present-day Russia and Eastern Europe.
Methodius, the older of the two brothers, was an important government official who would have spoken some Slavic as part of his job. Later, he grew tired of public affairs and retired to a Christian monastery. Similarly, Cyril abandoned civil service and moved to Constantinople to become a professor. Why these two saint brothers are co-patrons of Europe | EWTN Vaticano
Slavic Christians are the largest religious group in Europe. Their liturgy is celebrated in two different rites: Eastern and Western. The faithful are largely divided between Catholic and Orthodox traditions. But the origins of their baptism go back to a single, united Church, before the schism… and to two saint brothers Cyril and Methodius.
In 1980, Saint Pope John Paul II proclaimed saints Cyril and Methodius co-Patrons of Europe and the Orthodox Church even sees them as equals to the Apostles.
Father Jaromir Zadrapa, an official from the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity says their work is the best example of how much the Church can do when united.

Cyril and Methodius Trailer
From the 6th till 23th of March Cyprus has become a part of the shooting of the new International film project called Cyril and Methodius. This 105' long Czech movie (release in Nov 2013) and a 4x52' long TV documentary drama (release in June 2013) is coproduced by Slovakia, Russia and Slovenia.
The film narrows a story about Byzantine Greek brothers who influenced the cultural development of all Slavs (they are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, new law system, development of the liturgy, translation of the Old Testament) and received the title "Apostles to the Slavs". They are venerated in the Orthodox Church as saints with the title of "equal-to-apostles". Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church and Pope John Paul II declared ...

Methodius, the older of the two brothers, was an important government official who would have spoken some Slavic as part of his job. Later, he grew tired of public affairs and retired to a Christian monastery. Similarly, Cyril abandoned civil service and moved to Constantinople to become a professor. In about 860, the Byzantine Church asked the brothers to travel as missionaries to what we know today as Ukraine.
Methodius and Cyril were dedicated to the idea of communicating in a people’s native language. Throughout their lives, they battled against those who saw value only in Greek or Latin. Before they left on their mission, Cyril constructed a written script for the Slavic language so he could translate the Bible and share the Gospel with the Slavic people. Cyril’s script is considered a precursor of Cyrillic, later developed by his students and named after him.
Before Methodius and Cyril, the Slavic people had no written language of their own. Through their Bible translation and missionary work, the brothers influenced the cultural development of all Slavs by developing the first alphabet for the region. They went on to disciple kings, convince scholars, and confront Mullahs.
So influential was the brothers’ work that centuries later, when the Slovakian people crafted a constitution, it read in part, “We, the Slovak People, bearing in mind the political and cultural heritage of our predecessors … mindful of the spiritual bequest of Cyril and Methodius … adopted this constitution.”
The Cyrillic script has now been used for various alphabets across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Today, it’s estimated that over 250 million people use Cyrillic as the official alphabet for their national languages, with Russia accounting for about half of them. Now known as the “Apostles to the Slavs” and co-patron saints of Europe, the influence of Cyril and Methodius was vast, and their legacy lives on.

In the 9th century, two remarkable brothers named Cyril and Methodius embarked on a monumental mission that would forever shape the religious and cultural landscape of the Slavic peoples. These Byzantine Greek brothers, hailing from Thessaloniki, ventured into the heart of Eastern Europe, armed with a deep passion for spreading Christianity and a profound dedication to preserving and translating ancient texts. Through their tireless efforts, Cyril and Methodius not only successfully introduced Christianity to the Slavic peoples but also laid the foundation for the development of Slavic literature and culture.
History is a broad term that refers to the study and interpretation of past events and their significance to the present day. It encompasses the actions, beliefs, and experiences of human beings throughout time, as well as the physical artifacts and records that document these events. The study of history helps us to understand how the world we live in today has been shaped by past events and how we can learn from them.
The importance of history cannot be overstated. By examining past events, we can learn from the successes and failures of those who came before us, and apply this knowledge to our own lives and society. It helps us to understand the roots of current political, economic, social, and cultural issues and how they have evolved over time. History can also help us to appreciate the diversity of human experience and the many ways in which people have interacted with one another throughout history.
One of the key methods used in the study of history is the interpretation of primary sources. These can include written records, such as letters, diaries, and official documents, as well as physical artifacts like artwork, tools, and architecture. By examining these sources and analyzing them in context, historians can gain insights into the beliefs, values, and motivations of past peoples and societies. This can help us to understand the complexities of human behavior and decision-making, as well as the impact of larger social, economic, and political forces.
Another important aspect of the study of history is the consideration of multiple perspectives. This involves taking into account the viewpoints of different groups of people, such as women, minorities, and those who have been historically marginalized or excluded from mainstream narratives. By doing so, historians can gain a more complete picture of past events and the ways in which they have affected different communities.
In addition to its academic importance, history also plays a crucial role in shaping our collective memory and identity as a society. By remembering and commemorating important events and figures from the past, we can create a shared sense of history and belonging. This can help us to build stronger communities and foster greater empathy and understanding between different groups of people.
Overall, the study of history is essential for understanding ourselves, our world, and our place in it. Through careful analysis of past events and sources, we can gain insights into the complexities of human behavior and decision-making, appreciate the diversity of human experience, and learn from the successes and failures of those who came before us.

Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church and Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe. Project Cyril and Methodius was supported by Media Development EU fund and it is a part of the big European celebration (also celebrated by UNESCO) of the 1150th anniversary of their mission to Great Moravia.
The reason why the filmmakers have chosen Cyprus over other countries were the spectacular landscape, beautiful sea, short distances between various environments and very well preserved sights especially from the early Christian period.
The goal of the crew lead by the famous director Petr Nikolaev and the producer Viktor Kristof was to depict some crucial scenes of the early carrier of Cyril and Methodius. The pictures shot in Cyprus unfolds with the brothers' most dramatic episodes of their fates in Constantinople and the first missionary journeys to Arabia and Kazaks where they, amongst other things, exhume the remains of the martyr and third Pope, Clement the First, from the sea and also their journey to Olympia.
Here is a short review of some of the locations used for the shooting: Agia Napa Monastery, Petra tou Romiou, Cape Greko, Venetian bridge and waterfalls in Troodos, Helenistic Tombs of Macronissos, Camel Park in Mazotos.
The realization of the filmmaking has been supported by Cyprus Tourism Organization and special thanks go to the St. Neophytos Monastery in Paphos.

Why do Eastern European countries use different alphabets?
Most Eastern European countries share the same Slavic ethnicity, language, and heritage. However, Eastern European nations do not all share the same writing system. The fact that Eastern Europe is divided between Cyrillic script and Latin script sparks the question: Why do Eastern European countries use different alphabets?
