Committee for Skeptical Inquiry - UFO Balloons
On July 13, 2003, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry was sent a video taken by two local witnesses showing three small dots flying through the sky. It was reported to be a UFO sighting. After several experiments, we were able to show that releasing silver mylar balloons filled with helium created a strikingly similar effect. The flashing is likely caused by the camera's autofocus trying to find enough detail to focus on.

CSICon: The Conference Dedicated to Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking
They say "New Orleans lingers on the threshold between the Old World and the New, between history and legend." Actually the convention bureau says that. Separating history from legend is one of the things skeptics love best—right up there with sifting science from pseudoscience and combing brilliance from bull. At CSICon you can do all that, and more—on the boundary of the bayou. It's a conference like no other, uniting the romance of New Orleans and the shiver of Halloween weekend. But there will be more than voodoo and spirits in the air. Join us for four days of fun, mystery, and take-no-prisoners skeptical inquiry in the heart of the famous New Orleans French Quarter. And who knows, maybe you'll see the ghost of Jean Lafitte (but we're skeptical). Register today at www.csiconference.org

NY Philosopher Popular Skeptic Kurtz Dies At 86
Paul Kurtz, who founded an international center devoted to debunking psychics and UFOs and promoting science and reason over what he viewed as religious myths, has died. He was 86. The secular humanist philosopher died Saturday at his home in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst. His death was announced Monday by the Center for Inquiry, which was founded by Kurtz in 1991 and has more than three dozen branches worldwide. A prolific author and organizer, Kurtz also founded the not-for-profit Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and Council for Secular Humanism, as well as the secular humanist magazine Free Inquiry and Skeptical Inquirer magazine, which takes on such topics as alien sightings, paranormal claims and homeopathic remedies. Most recently, he formed the Institute for Science and Human Values.

Simon Singh Interview - World Skeptics Congress Berlin 2012
Simon Singh is being interviewed by Julia Offe (GWUP) at the 6th World Skeptics Congress in Berlin 2012. Simon Singh talks about the Chiropractic lawsuit and backlash: In 2008, The Guardian published Singh's column "Beware the Spinal Trap", an article that was critical of the practice of chiropractic and which resulted in Singh being sued for libel by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). When the case was first brought against him, The Guardian supported him and funded his legal advice, as well as offering to pay the BCA's legal costs in an out-of-court settlement if Singh chose to settle. Court case: In 2009, Mr Justice Eady ruled in a preliminary hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice that merely using the phrase "happily promotes bogus treatments" meant that Singh was stating, as a matter of fact (rather than as a matter of personal opinion or metaphor), that the British Chiropractic Association was being consciously dishonest in promoting chiropractic for treating the children's ailments in question. Singh denied he intended any such meaning. Singh decided to appeal the ruling, which raised substantially the potential financial liability that he would face if he lost the case. Leave to appeal was granted in October 2009. The pre-trial hearing took place in February 2010 before three senior judges at the Royal Courts of Justice. In April 2010, they allowed Singh's appeal, ruling that the high court judge had "erred in his approach". The Court of Appeal ...

Evolution and the Future of the Earth
The Darwinian revolution began in a new understanding of how species change through time by means of natural selection, and affirms that each species, including our own, is genetically adapted in exquisite detail for life in a particular environment. The studies of adaptation through time and the diversity of the millions of other species are the core of evolutionary biology. Functional biology, including medical research, will do well to incorporate the study of biodiversity and the process of evolution that has created it. Edward Osborne Wilson is an American biologist, researcher (sociobiology, biodiversity), theorist (consilience, biophilia), naturalist (conservationist) and author. His biological specialty is myrmecology, the study of ants. Wilson is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. He is known for his career as a scientist, his advocacy for environmentalism, and his secular-humanist and deist ideas pertaining to religious and ethical matters. As of 2007, he is Pellegrino University Research Professor in Entomology for the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He is a Humanist Laureate of the International Academy of Humanism.

Weird Science: An Introduction to Anomolistic Psychology
Presented by Professor Chris French at our August 3, 2011 Drinking Skeptically in Silver Spring, MD. The Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit (APRU) was set up by Professor Chris French in 2000 in the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Many paranormal claims have been scientifically tested under properly controlled conditions along the way. This overview will present some of the results of such investigations. Professor Chris French is the Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit in the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, as well as being a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association and a member of the Scientific and Professional Advisory Board of the British False Memory Society. UFO Battles Over San Diego "Captured On Video" (Perang UFO di langit San Diego)
UFO Battles Captured On Video? A San Diego-based UFO researcher named Ed Grimsley captured what one writer called "multiple unidentified flying objects" that were "saucer-shaped [and] appeared to hover in the sky and change direction before moving out of sight." The video was taken April 30 with Grimsley's organization, Skywatch. To the trained eye, however, this video appears to show something much more banal than a UFO battle. According to his website, Grimsley "has been seeing battles between unknown aircraft in the night skies since he was a teenager," including two different types of spacecraft "shooting it out using what appear to be laser weapons." Furthermore, "he has seen hundreds of these objects recently and using his five Military grade night vision binoculars he has invited many people to come to his areas and view the objects in earth space shooting it out." Grimsley believes that "alien or human-like beings may very well be getting ready to take control or evict us from plant Earth," and has made it his mission to "show people what is happening in earth space all the time. I want people to start looking through night vision binoculars and see the battles tasking [sic] place between aircraft including saucer shaped objects." [Could Extraterrestrials Really Invade Earth?] So what about the strange UFO lights that Grimsley and his followers are seeing? Contrary to the account above, the UFOs in the video do not appear "saucer-shaped" at all, but rather look ...
