Some music I'm working on using the Rockman Headphone Amp Modules by Tom Scholz of Boston
Some music I'm working on using the Rockman Headphone Amp Modules by Tom Scholz of Boston
I've been listening to a lot of old music lately and I've been drawn to the old 70's and 80's distortion tones of the electric guitars. Turns out a lot of those cool, rich guitar tones are from the Rockmodules that Tom Scholz of the band Boston developed to help shape his sound for when they played live and recorded. So, I bought the headphone amp modules and have been re-recording some old musical ideas I had and wow...new life has been breathed into some songs that I have been wanting to record. So, here are some song samples of things I've been working on the last couple of weeks late at night when my kid's are sleeping. I used the following Rockman Products...X100, Ultralight, Soloist and Bass Rockman modules. They don't make these anymore and this guitar sound is not on the radio anymore and hasn't been heard in YEARS!!!! So, please listen and I hope you like it!

Boston More Than A Feeling
Boston More Than A Feeling
"More Than a Feeling" is a song by the rock band Boston, released as the lead single from their self-titled debut album on Epic Records in September 1976, with "Smokin'" on the flipside. The single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The track is now a staple of classic rock and in 2009 it was named the 39th best hard rock song of all time by VH1. His biggest hit, "More Than a Feeling" took writer Tom Scholz five years to complete.[2] The verses are in the key of D major while the chorus is in G major. The track achieves a majestic sound quality, blending acoustic and electric guitar work, soaring vocals and ethereal harmonies. The lyrics express the author's discontent with the present and his yearning for a former love, whose memory is strongly evoked by an old familiar song. The song is in compound AABA form. Boston - Hitch A Ride (Isolated Bass)
Isolated bass of Boston's "Hitch a Ride" off their debut album. I left the rest of the song somewhat audible to give it some context. This is an amazingly clean and awesome bass line, and I have always wondered why it's so bogged down in the mix.

MXR 6 Band EQ in 100 Seconds
MXR 6 Band EQ in 100 Seconds
MXR Six band equalizer. I go through what each frequency band sounds like; the range of each band, and then I go to the Tom Scholz Boston setting into a ZDS-2. (He went into a cranked Marshall though... I work with what I have) Finally, I close with a little bit of a metal mid scoop... didn't do it justice though. I just gave the scope of each band on its own... you'll have to use your imagination to think of all the many, many combinations possible. I am a huge fan of EQ. It lets you adjust your tone and signal to flexibly adapt to any signal chain, effects, amps, and guitars. It's just a great tool to have.

I spent this week finally (after many years) learning to play Boston's epic tune, "Foreplay." I have always loved Boston. Tom Scholz is a genius, and the band he put together will live for all time as one of the greatest rock bands ever.
