Hooper(1978) Movie Review
My review of one of my favorite flicks, Hooper(1978) starring Burt Reynolds, Jan-Michael Vincent, Sally Field, Brian Keith, John Marley, Robert Klein, James Best, Adam West, and Alfie Wise. Directed by Hal Needham.
Trivia
Stunt man A.J. Bakunas, doubling for Burt Reynolds, dropped 232 feet, setting a record for the highest jump without a parachute.
Hal Needham said on a radio show that he decided he wanted a shot from the point-of-view of the stuntman doing the motorcycle stunt that opens the film but the stuntman had already left for the day; so Needham put on pads over his street clothes and did the gag himself. The footage was not used, after all.
The climactic huge stunt sequence, referred to by the crew as "Damnation Alley," was staged at the by-that-time-disused Northington General Hospital, a World War II military hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which had also been used as married-student housing by The University of Alabama. After most of the hospital buildings (including a large smokestack) were blown up or otherwise demolished for the filming, the lot was cleared and the University Mall complex was built on the site.
Director Roger Deal (Robert Klein)'s last lines - about film being "little pieces of time" - are a paraphrase of remarks by Peter Bogdanovich. In fact, the director character was based on Bogdanovich.
Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham both worked as stuntmen early in their careers. The film was made as a tribute to all of their fellow stuntmen.
The Danish title for this film is "Hård hud over hele kroppen," which translates into "Rough Skin over the Entire Body."
The movie that Hooper and Ski are working on is "The Spy Who Laughed at Danger" which is obviously spoofing James Bond movies. The movie title is an obvious spoof on The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) as well as the movie's "theme music" which is similar to the Bond movie themes. Three years later, when Hal Needham directed and Burt Reynolds starred in The Cannonball Run (1981), which featured Roger Moore spoofing his James Bond persona, Needham and 20th Century Fox almost got sued by Albert R. Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond movies.
At the start of the film, just after the opening stunt, Hooper is talking with the director, he turns away and says: "I hate it when directors slobber all over me like that." Cully replies "Well, when your last picture made over a 100 million dollars you don't have to slobber over anybody." This is a reference to the director, Hal Needham, who made over 100 million dollars with his first picture Smokey and the Bandit (1977), immediately green lighting the production of "Hooper".
In the movie, Burt Reynolds and James Best are long time friends. They also close friends in real life. In fact, Best, who also teaches acting, was an early acting instructor to Reynolds.
The name "Hooper" is obviously a reference to the name: "Hooker" - as in Buddy Joe Hooker ( a famous stuntman and various others in the same family). Buddy Joe Hooker's name even appears on a strip of tape on a drawer in "Sonny Hooper's" (Burt Reynolds ) trailer. This can be seen over Burt's shoulder, early in the movie, in the scene where Sonny/Burt and Cully/James Best do their Roy Rogers' sidekick and James Stewart impressions. Tommy J. Huff's name also appears on the drawer under Buddy Joe's.
