A country with 18 religious sects and a history of sectarian conflict, Lebanon often seems on the brink of violence. Since the uprising in Syria began more than two years ago, that tension has escalated, especially between Sunni and Shia. Lebanese playwright and director Yehia Jaber is trying to defuse the tension through theater. In a one-man play, he highlights the history of Tarik al Jadidah, a low income and predominantly Sunni neighborhood in Beirut that often is seen as a barometer of Sunni sentiment. Paige Kollock reports for VOA from Beirut that the play is one way of the many ways Lebanese are dealing with the tension in the country through art.

Egypt Protests: Islamists Call For \'Friday Of Anger\'
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/16/egypt-protests_n_3766589.html

Heavy gunfire rang out in the heart of Cairo as tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters took to the streets Friday across Egypt in defiance of a military-imposed state of emergency following the country\'s bloodshed earlier this week. At least 17 people were killed in the fighting, including police officers.

Military helicopters circled overhead as armed residents set up checkpoints throughout the capital. Police fired tear gas as clashes erupted between Brotherhood supporters and locals opposed to their protest before some reached a key square the group had urged its supporters to converge on.

Protesters and residents of the neighborhoods they marched by exchanged gunfire and birdshot as tanks blocked key roads and key junctures. The Brotherhood urged its supporters in Cairo to head to Ramses Square, near the capital\'s train station in the heart of the capital.

Real News @ http://RevolutionNews.US — Obama Admin Tells Congress 'No Congressional Approval Needed' to Wage War...Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta testified at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Wednesday that the Obama administration would seek "international permission" before intervening military in Syria's civil war but left open, however, the question of whether the approval of Congress would be either sought or required. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) pressed Panetta repeatedly on that question, but failed to get a definitive answer. "We're worried about international legal basis, but no one's worried about the fundamental constitutional legal basis that this Congress has over war," Sessions protested. Referring to the last year's bombing raids by the United States and United Nations allies in Libya, Sessions said: "We were not asked, stunningly, in direct violation of the War Powers Act, whether or not you believe it's constitutional, [the Libyan raids] certainly didn't comply with it. We spent our time worrying about the UN, the Arab League, NATO, and too little time worrying about the elected representatives of the United States," Sessions said. "Do you think you can act without Congress and initiate a No Fly Zone in Syria, without congressional approval?" he asked Panetta. "Again, our goal would be to seek international permission and we would come to the Congress and inform you and determine how best to approach this," Panetta replied. "Whether or not we would want to get permission from the Congress, I think those are issues I think we would have to discuss as we decide what to do here." Sessions made it clear he was not pleased with what he heard. "Well, I'm almost breathless about that," the Alabama lawmaker replied. "Because what I heard you say is, we are going to seek international approval and then we'll come and tell the Congress what we might do, and we might seek Congressional approval. I want to say to you, that's a big deal, wouldn't you agree? You served in the Congress," he reminded Panetta, a U.S. representative from California from 1977-1993. "Wouldn't you agree that would be pretty breathtaking for the average American? So would you like to clarify that?" - "Leave no authority existing not responsible to the people." —Thomas Jefferson - Time For A New American Revolution? - Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/RevolutionNewz Facebook: http://facebook.com/RevolutionNewsDotUS Original Channels: http://youtube.com/RevolutionNewsUS http://youtube.com/RevolutionNewsDotUSUS3 http://youtube.com/RevolutionNewz http://www.youtube.com/PresidentTerrorist http://youtube.com/TheHaightAshbury http://youtube.com/HashburyNews http://youtube.com/ChildTerrorist http://youtube.com/NaziPolice http://youtube.com/NoBrainMcCain http://youtube.com/TerroristPatriot http://youtube.com/TerroristCitizen http://youtube.com/PropagandaTruth - Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.

Egypt Protests: Islamists Call For 'Friday Of Anger' http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/16/egypt-protests_n_3766589.html Heavy gunfire rang out in the heart of Cairo as tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters took to the streets Friday across Egypt in defiance of a military-imposed state of emergency following the country's bloodshed earlier this week. The Brotherhood urged its supporters in Cairo to head to Ramses Square, near the capital's train station in the heart of the capital. Violent clashes leave 17 dead and scores injured across Egypt as Muslim Brotherhood's 'march of anger' meets police firing live ammunition Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters converge on Ramses Square Gunfire heard over main Cairo overpass and police also fire tear gas Egyptian army soldiers pictured around capital on armored vehicles Official death toll from Wednesday's massacre in Cairo passes 500 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2395160/Violent-clashes-leave-17-dead-scores-injured-Egypt-Muslim-Brotherhoods-march-anger-meets-police-firing-live-ammunition.html Egypt 'Day of Rage' turns violent, protesters killed http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/16/us-egypt-protests-idUSBRE97C09A20130816 Protests by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi turned violent across Egypt on Friday, with witnesses reporting four dead in central Cairo and at least 12 killed in northern cities as the Muslim Brotherhood staged a "Day of Rage". The army deployed dozens of armored vehicles on major roads around the capital after Mursi's Brotherhood movement called the demonstrations, and the Interior Ministry said police would use live ammunition against anyone threatening public buildings. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood called for a "Day of Rage" following this week's deadly crackdown by security forces. The protests and subsequent army response soon turned violent, with at least 27 people reported dead across the country. Protesters have demanded the reinstatement of deposed President Mohamed Mursi, whose detention was extended for 30 days on Thursday. Over 620 people have been killed in the conflict this week.
