Well we have the opportunity tonight to look again at Hebrews chapter 11....Hebrews chapter 11. We have come to the end of this great faith chapter. It is monumental for a number of reasons. It is a monumental case laid for a relationship with God based on faith and not works. It is monumental as well because it gives us a kind of summary of the Old Testament. It kind of sweeps us through from the family of Adam all the way through the prophets which brings us virtually down to the New Testament. It is somewhat like the sermon of Stephen early in the book of Acts where he summarizes the history of God's working in Israel. Here similarly there is this summary, the emphasis is on the necessity of faith to have a true relationship to God.
Let's read the verses that we'll be looking at tonight. Verse 30, "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith, Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient after she had welcomed the spies in peace. And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received back their dead by resurrection and others were tortured not accepting their release so that they might obtain a better resurrection. And others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes also chains and imprisonment. They were stoned. They were sawn in two. They were tempted. They were put to death with the sword. They went about in sheepskins, in goatskins being destitute, afflicted, ill treated. Men of whom the world was not worthy, wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground. And all these, having gained approval through their faith did not receive what was promised because God had provided something better for us so that apart from us they would not be made perfect, or complete."...

Noah: A Preacher of Faith (Hebrews 11:7) John MacArthur
http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/90-384
All right, let's turn to Hebrews chapter 11...Hebrews chapter 11 and we're going to look at Noah and the work of faith, the great story of Noah is summarized in one verse, verse 7 of Hebrews 11, "By faith, Noah being warned by God about things not yet seen in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household by which he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith."
Now one of the things you would note from that is you just read a Bible verse that condenses Genesis 6, 7, 8 and 9...in that sense, it is a very cryptic verse, it assumes that you know the story. And that's a fair assumption because after all, this book was written to whom? To whom? Hebrews. They knew the story, they were extremely familiar with the story. In fact, the whole chapter is cryptic, the references to Abel, brief. The references to Enoch, brief. The references to Noah, brief. A little more detail with regard to Abraham and Sarah, references to Moses relatively brief, references to others, brief. And in verse 32, you just have names, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets.
So the assumption here is that these people know the Old Testament. They're familiar with these characters and their stories. And certainly every Jew was familiar with the astounding story of Noah. Noah is the next in the list of faithful men, men whose lives were marked by faith. I remind you that James said, "Faith without works is dead." What he meant by that is true faith is supported by action. And Noah is certainly the classic illustration of that fact in the Old Testament. His action of faith is in some ways more remarkable than anyone else. The Bible everywhere and always teaches that men come to God by faith alone and then go on to live in faith, that simply means to take God at His Word and trust in that Word as true. Never by works or self-effort, or ceremony, moral achievement do you reach God.. You always come to God by faith. It has always been so, it has never been any different....

Numbers 30:1,2 And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded. If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
Exodus 6:8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.
Isaiah 54:7-10 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Psalms 105:8-11 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: Saying, Unto you will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:
Psalms 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.
Judges 11:30,31 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering...

Interceding for the Oppressed
Who is My Neighbor? Seeking Justice for the Oppressed
“BECOMING AN INTERCESSOR FOR JUSTICE”
1. Walk with the Good Samaritan and see how his getting close enough to his injured enemy lead him to seek justice on the behalf of the oppressed, the abused and mistreated.
2. How do we apply seeking justice as we walk and live in our neighborhood.
PARABLE OF THE OPPRESSED WIDOW
1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’ ” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Luke 18:1-8
1. Always pray
2. Do not give up
3. Pray for God's Justice
4. God will give justice when His people cry day and night.
5. Praying for justice for the oppressed takes great faith.
WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN JUSTICE AND FAITH?
Justice is not an easy thing to seek. It seems the closer we get involved with people and neighbors, the more injustices we see. Parents who neglect and even abuse their children. People who are oppressed with addictions. Politicians who seek to line their own pockets and the pockets of their contributors rather than benefit the people. Preachers who bend the truth of God rather than alienate big givers. Manufacturer's who take advantage of cheap labor, even children in foreign countries. I could go on and on. Most of us have experienced injustice ourselves.
It can be a false accusation, a stinging insult, a theft of something precious, an abusive public official, an inconsiderate neighbor. We even experience injustice within our families, with abuse, mistreatment, mishandling of money, fighting over inheritance.
The is injustice aplenty in this world. People right now are imprisoned, or being forced to work as slaves, or forced to serve as child soldiers, and many are being murdered simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ.
INSIGHT INTO THE CONNECTION BETWEEN JUSTICE AND FAITH
REVELATION CHAPTER 6:9-11:
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. Revelation 6:9-11
God told them that there were going to be more martyrs. The number was not yet complete. He told them to rest a little while longer.
That is not what we want to hear. We want the injustice to stop. We want the murdering to stop. We want the abuse, the slavery the torture to stop! But God says to REST a little longer!
The connection between justice and faith is that while we long for justice, while we plead day and night for justice, we must NEVER lose faith that God is in control, that God knows exactly what is going on. We must have faith that God cares deeply about the injustices in this world. But God has a plan and that plan will be accomplished in His time!
THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH
REV 13:10
If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. Revelation 13:10
Good Samaritan's must plead and come to the aid of the oppressed, but we must never, never lose faith that God is in control! We must be patient and faithful as we wait for His throne to complete His work!
WHO IS AN INTERCESSOR?
The picture of an intercessor is found in Rom 8:26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26 an intercessor
1. An intercessor helps - sunantilambanō,
1. made up of sun, "together with," anti "over against," and lambanō, "to take."
The word speaks of the action of a person coming to another's aid by taking hold over against that person, of the load he is carrying. The person helping does not take the entire load, but helps the other person in his endeavor.
So, the Holy Spirit who indwells us comes to our aid in our spiritual problems and difficulties, not by
