After the Vietnam War, Vietnam and Cambodia appeared many contradictions. Disputes and border clashes occurred repeatedly in the 1977 and 1978, but the conflict actually began shortly after the fall of Saigon. May 4, 1975, a Khmer Rouge troops raided Phu Quoc island, six days after the Khmer Rouge invaded and executed more than 500 civilians in the island of Tho Chu. Angry aggressive acts of the Khmer Rouge, Hanoi counterattack to regain the islands. Following the raid on the island of Phu Quoc and Tho Chu, besides many small raids, the Khmer Rouge to conduct two large-scale incursions into Vietnam. The first major attack took place in April 1977, regular troops penetrated 10 km Khmer Rouge into the territory of Vietnam, occupying some parts of An Giang province and massacred a large number of civilians. PHNOM PENH, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia will host a large-scale ASEAN-US military exercise in 2010, Khmer-language newspaper the Deum Ampil said on Tuesday. "It is an honor for Cambodia to be chosen by ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and superpower US as the location for such a large-scale international military exercise," Pol Saroeurn, Commander-in-Chief of Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), told the paper. "We will take efforts to make it a success," he said, adding that he will also instruct all his subordinates to be careful with the work. The Sihanouk ville port will be used as the maritime location of this military haul, the paper also quoted a governmental official as saying on condition of anonymity. Cambodia once joined international military exercises respectively in Bangladesh and Mongolia and also sent peacekeepers to Sudan for de-mining operation under the UN umbrella. In April 2008, 40 Cambodian soldiers participated in a three-week multi-national peace-keeping exercise in Bangladesh. The US-led mission was named "Ambassador of Peace" and involved some 400 soldiers from 12 countries, including Bangladesh,India, Indonesia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nepal, Brunei,Mongolia, Tonga, Cambodia and US In July 2007, 43 Cambodian soldiers took part in a military exercise for UN peacekeeping mission in Mongolia. Thai opposition activists protest near a hotly disputed temple between Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday. The two countries have had a series of standoffs over the Preah Vihear temple, and seven soldiers died in border skirmishes here over the past year. The latest protest - led by PAD politician Veera Somkwamkid - called on the Cambodian military to leave the region. [Veera Somkwamkid, PAD Politician]: "Our protest is to condemn the Cambodia government that has brought civilians here and mobilized their military into Thai territory. They have also been erecting building in the area over the past few years." The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) are the national military forces of Cambodia. The Commander-in-Chief is HM King Norodom Sihamoni, and consists of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Special Forces.

The armed forces currently operate under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defence. Under the constitution the RCAF is in charged of protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Cambodia from external threats.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces consists of three branches:

The RCAF was created in 1993 by the merger of the Cambodian People's Armed Forces and the two non communist resistance armies. At the time, there were also resistance forces opposing the Government comprising the Khmer Rouge and a separate royalist resistance movement (also known as the National United Army or NUA).

The Royal Cambodian Army is the largest force with troops stationed in each province of the country. The Royal Cambodian Navy is the second largest force and operates at sea, along the Mekong and Bassac rivers and in the Tonle Sap Lake. The military police force numbers around 7,800 employees and runs parallel to the civilian police force.

The military police have posts in every province and municipality across the country. The Royal Cambodian Air Force is the smallest of the three forces and has around 1,000 employees. The air force operates in every province with an airport.

Regions

The RCAF command is divided geographically into five military regions and one special region. Each region includes several sub regions that correlate to civilian municipal and provincial boundaries With the end of fighting and the surrender of the last of the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian military has been undergoing substantial changes as it shifts to become a peacetime force.

Since 1999, the government has been working to demobilize large numbers of servicemen with support from the World Bank. Demobilization efforts began in February 2000 and the first 1,500 soldiers were demobilized in a pilot project later that year. In 2001, the first phase of demobilization got under way and 15,000 soldiers returned to civilian life in large ceremonies around the country. A second phase of demobilization was planned for 2003 where an additional 30,000 servicemen would leave the armed forces. However, the process has been stalled by allegations of corruption and procurement irregularities.
