For more great original country music, go here.. rjbocm.com Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com There's no place that I'd rather be than right here With my red neck, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer. The barmaid is mad cause some guy made a pass The jukebox is playin "There Stands the Glass" The cigarette smoke kinda hangs in the air Red necks, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer. A cowboy is cussin' the pinball machine A drunk at the bar is gettin' noisy and mean And a guy on the phone says "I'll be home soon, dear" Red necks, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer. No we don't blend with that white collar crowd We're a little too rowdy, and a little too loud But there's no place that I'd rather be than right here With my red neck, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer. The semi's are passin' on the highway outside The four-thirty crowd is about to arrive The sun's goin' down and we'll all soon be here Red necks, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer.

Johnny Russell "Distant Drums"
Johnny Russell "Distant Drums"
Legendry Opry star Johnny Russell sings his version of anotyher Opry legends classic song.I first heard this many years ago on an Music For Pleasure LP compilation of Jim Reeves sound-a-likes. It didn't say who the singers were and it was only recently that I came across it again on a collection of country greats; this track is from that cd and in its notes is atributed to Johnny Russell, and yes, whilst it's an excellent cover, if you listen to this and then to the Jim Reeves original you can tell the differance, Russell's voice is "gruffer" and lacks the velvet smoothness of Gentleman Jim. I hope this will clear up some of the queries over who's singing.

FINALLY! A few years of looking paid off for this, and here we go...this was said to have been banned by some radio stations when it came out in 1977, which explains its low chart peak (#91). The lady answering the phone is Beverly Heckel, Johnny's much younger wife at the time.

Russell's first charted country single made it to #64 in 1971. This is a damn hard one to come across in its original version, so please excuse the groans and creaks of the tortured vinyl grooves :)
