Shortlands is a suburban village in the London Borough of Bromley, Greater London, England. It is located to the west and south west of the town of Bromley.

History

Historically, Shortlands was known as Clay Hill. It became known as Shortlands around 1800, after the fields which, at this point of the Ravensbourne river, ran at right angles up the slopes on either side. Suburban development began in 1863 with the sale of the Shortlands House estate, making full advantage of the railway station opened in May 1858.

Transport

Shortlands station serves the area with rail services to London Victoria via Herne Hill, Kentish Town via Catford, Orpington and Sevenoaks via Swanley. Shortlands is served by several Transport for London bus services linking it with areas including Beckenham, Bromley, Croydon, Crystal Palace, Orpington and Penge.

Shortlands (constituency)

Shortlands is a parliamentary constituency electing one representative to the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. It had a registered electorate of 2,556 in 2006. It is one of eight constituencies in Western Province and (as its name indicates) covers the Shortland Islands.

The constituency was one of the thirty-eight original constituencies established for the First Parliament elected in 1976. Its first MP was Remesion Eresi.

Results in 2010

In the general election on August 4, 2010, there were seven candidates for the seat, including incumbent MP Augustine Taneko and prior MP Albert Laore. The seat was won by independent candidate Steve Laore, who obtained 1,073 votes, and was thereby elected to Parliament for the first time.

Steve Laore died after collapsing suddenly on August 25, a mere three weeks after his election. A bye-election was held on March 30, 2011, and won by Laore's brother, Christopher Laore.
