KQED-FM (88.5 FM) is an NPR-member radio station owned by Northern California Public Broadcasting in San Francisco, California.

KQED-FM was founded by James Day in 1969 as the radio arm of KQED Television. The founding manager was Bernard Mayes who later went on to be Executive Vice-President of KQED TV and also co-founder and chairman of NPR (National Public Radio). KQED-FM was first located in a former church building where the Presbyterian church ran station KXKX-FM the licence of which was sold to KQED. The first programming of KQED-FM included news feeds from NPR, 'street radio' broadcast live from local street corners, drama and music. Later, due to reduced funding, Mayes opened the air to 'Tribal Radio' - productions by local non-profit groups, some in their own languages. Today, KQED-FM is the most-listened to public radio station in the United States,^[1] and as of the fall 2005 Arbitron ratings, the station ranks third in the San Francisco market.^[2] In addition to local programming, KQED-FM carries content from major public radio distributors such as National Public Radio, Public Radio International, BBC World Service and American Public Media. Among the locally produced shows are Forum with Michael Krasny, The California Report, Perspectives and Pacific Time.

In addition to over-the-air broadcasts, KQED-FM audio is carried on Comcast digital cable channel 960 and is webcast with live streaming audio around the clock with Forum, and Pacific Time carried live with nationwide coverage on Sirius Satellite Radio. KQED also offers an extensive audio archive and podcasts of previous shows for download.

One of the most famous programs to have been broadcast on KQED was An Hour with Pink Floyd, a sixty minute performance by Pink Floyd recorded in 1970 without an audience at the station's studio. The program was broadcast only twice—once in 1970, and once again in 1981. The setlist included "Atom Heart Mother", "Cymbaline", "Grantchester Meadows", "Green Is the Colour", "Careful with That Axe, Eugene", and "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun".

In 2003, KQED Radio expanded to the Sacramento area by purchasing KEBR-FM in North Highlands from Family Radio, a religious broadcaster based in Oakland. Some residents and management at KXJZ, the NPR station already serving the Sacramento area, criticized the move, saying that KQED would only duplicate KXJZ programming. KXJZ's parent company, Capital Public Radio, also had plans to purchase KEBR. CPR's plan was to broadcast jazz on KEBR and convert KXJZ into an all-news station. Indeed, KQED and KXJZ carry Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, and All Things Considered at the same times opposite each other. KQED argues that it carries more regional news programming during the middle of the day, and news programs at night, while KXJZ has a smaller news bureau and music programming overnight. Capital Public Radio and community residents argued that duplication of exactly the same NPR programming serves no one, and that it is very unusual for one NPR station to move in on the territory of a successful existing station. KXJZ has also increased its local midday programming with the addition of Insight, a daily interview program.

This was not the first time KQED-FM changed its format, to the chagrin of its competition and listeners – when they converted to an all news and information format by dropping classical music during the day, management and listeners of the other San Francisco public radio station, KALW, claimed their format had been stolen. KALW previously ran news and information programs during the day.

Melissa Marie McConnell is a beauty queen who has held the title Miss Louisiana USA and has competed at Miss USA.

McConnell, who hails from Ruston, Louisiana, is an experienced pageant contestant. She had placed in the semi-finals in the 2001 pageant, increased her position to third runner-up in the 2002 pageant and came close to winning the title in 2003 when she placed first runner up to Brittney Rogers of Shreveport. Rogers would later go on to compete in The Amazing Race 9.

The 2004 pageant, held at Lafayette's Heymann Performing Arts Theater in October 2003, was McConnell's last possible attempt because of the age restriction imposed by the Miss Universe Organization. On her fourth attempt, she finally won the Miss Louisiana USA title.

McConnell represented Louisiana in the nationally televised Miss USA 2004 pageant broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California on 12 April 2004, but failed to place. The pageant was won by Shandi Finnessey of Missouri.

McConnell graduated from Ruston High School in 1995 and went on to complete a bachelor's degree in journalism from Texas A&M University in 1999. She then returned to Louisiana, where she attended Louisiana State University and completed her Juris Doctor and Civil Law degree, passing her bar exam on her first attempt. She is currently working as an attorney. In 1994 McConnell established the Hope Empowers and Renews Others award to recognize and encourage ordinary people who reach out in love and service in an extraordinary manner. During her reign as Miss Louisiana USA, she awarded this honor to one special Louisianan every month.

Doug McConnell is a television journalist who has focused on environmental issues, with programs on the air continuously since 1982. He has created, produced and hosted many series, special programs, and news projects for local, national and international distribution. His broadcast awards include multiple Emmys, an Iris, and a Gabriel.

McConnell is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of ConvergenceMedia Productions (CMP) in Sausalito, California. One of CMP's principal products is OpenRoad with Doug McConnell, Exploring the West for Public Television nationally. OpenRoad on Public Television is closely linked to www.OpenRoad.TV, The Traveler's Video Guide to the West. McConnell is Co-Executive Producer and Managing Editor for both ventures. McConnell also develops and oversees other media projects undertaken by CMP.

From 1993-2009 McConnell was the Host and Senior Editor of the Bay Area Backroads television series on KRON Television in the San Francisco Bay Area. Backroads was one of the longest-running regional television series in American broadcast history, and was consistently the highest-rated locally produced, non-news program in the nation's sixth-largest market. During his Backroads years, McConnell co-authored two best-selling travel publications for Chronicle Books.

OpenRoad with Doug McConnell, Exploring the West began on San Francisco Public Television station KQED and its sister station in San Jose, KTEH, in April 2009. It has been accepted by American Public Television for distribution, and is now being picked up by Public Television stations across the country for broadcast beginning this fall.

The Bay Area Backroads program aired for 23 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, from 1985 through 2008. It began as a news magazine-style segment at local station KRON, when Jerry Graham profiled a local eccentric who carved tiki statues in his front yard. McConnell was hired to complete the 1993 season after Graham's retirement, but remained as host for 15 years.^[1] The show's theme was to highlight offbeat individuals from the Bay Area, creating the impression that the production crew was simply encountering them on a recreational driving tour (when in fact, there was a small research team that had planned every show).^[1]

McConnell received a Master's degree in Political Science from the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University (1968), and a Bachelor's degree in Government from Pomona College (1967).

Since 1983, McConnell has lived in the Bay Area with his wife, two sons, and a bevy of pets. He maintains a busy schedule of community activities and has been honored recently by the Marin Humane Society as "Humanitarian of the Year," by the San Francisco Bay Trail Project as "Volunteer of the Year," by California State Parks as "Honorary Ranger of the Year," and by the National Park Service as "Honorary National Park Ranger." McConnell has received many regional Emmys and other broadcast awards during his long career in television. In addition, McConnell has been given the prestigious Harold Gilliam Award for environmental reporting and storytelling in Northern California.

Beyond his television work, Doug has managed significant communications programs for the President's Commission on Coal, the Governor of Alaska, the University of Alaska, The Institute of Ecology, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and many other institutions.

McConnell's most recent venture is the creation of an online travel community called "OpenRoad.TV with Doug McConnell - The Traveler's Video Guide to the American West". OpenRoad.TV will be stocked with all the video, knowledge and insights that McConnell has compiled over the years and continues to collect. The professionally produced video content will be organized into easily accessible geographical and categorical contexts, with users being invited to vastly enrich it by adding their own stories, photographs and videos. The goal of OpenRoad.TV is to provide a website that's extensive, deep, entertaining and informative, and becomes a valuable resource to help people imagine, plan and book travels and get to know intriguing fellow travelers in the process.

Geoff Hoyle (April 15, 1945) is a British performer who originated the role of Zazu in the Broadway theatre production of The Lion King. Hoyle has also performed in vaudeville shows, worked with Bill Irwin in "The Pickle Family Circus", performed with Cirque Du Soleil's Nouvelle Expérience,^[1] and performed with the Revels.

In 2002, Hoyle performed in "Feast of Fools" at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California.^[2]

In 2007, Hoyle performs in Teatro ZinZanni^[3] in both its Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California venues.

In July/August 2009, Hoyle will perform the role of Alfred Doolittle as a special guest in Lamplighters Music Theatre's My Fair Lady. Dates are scheduled in the Bay Area of California.

Geoff's son Dan Hoyle has become a well-respected live theater actor in both San Francisco and New York.

Thuy Vu is an Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter for CBS-5 "Eyewitness News" in San Francisco. She currently cohosts "Eye on the Bay". ^[1]

Thuy was born in Vietnam and fled Vietnam by boat with her family as Saigon fell to the Communists at the end of the Vietnam War. She holds a Bachelor's Degree with Honors in Rhetoric from U.C. Berkeley ^[1]..

She was at KPIX for four years as a reporter and fill-in anchor in the 1990s. She was also the same things at KTVU. Thuy Vu joined ABC7 News in August 2000 as co-anchor of the ABC7 Sunday Morning News at 7 a.m and 9 a.m. She's also a reporter based in the South Bay Bureau. Thuy began her journalism career in public radio at KQED-FM in San Francisco and National Public Radio. She joined the CBS in December 2005, working out of the San Jose bureau.

Thuy has received numerous awards from both regional and national organizations for her reporting. American Women in Radio and Television honored her as Best Reporter in the Bay Area. She has won two national awards from the Asian American Journalists Association; one was for a multi-part series on post-war life in her homeland of Vietnam. She has also won honors from the Public Radio News Directors Association. She also earned Emmy and Associated Press awards for a feature on the 30th anniversary of the Operation Babylift flights at the end of the Vietnam war and as co-anchored live coverage of the fatal tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo in December 2007 and for her investigation of safety problems at California's amusement parks ^[1]..
