The Friends Life t20 (previously known as the Friends Provident t20) is a Twenty20 cricket league in England and Wales run by the ECB since 2010. The league consists of the 18 first-class counties teams divided into three divisions of six teams each. This plan, announced by the ECB in February 2009, replaced the more ambitious EPL project which would have included two overseas teams. The proposal was substantially modified following the credit crunch, and the change in circumstances of Allen Stanford himself. Friends Provident were announced as sponsors of the competition, having previously sponsored the 50-over competition.^[1]

This tournament replaced the Twenty20 Cup as the premier domestic Twenty20 competition of England and Wales.

Twenty20 Cup[link]

The first official Twenty20 matches were played on 13 June 2003, between the English counties in the Twenty20 Cup. The first season of Twenty20 in England was a relative success, with the Surrey Lions defeating the Warwickshire Bears by nine wickets in the final to claim the Twenty20 Cup. On 15 July 2004 Middlesex versus Surrey (the first Twenty20 game to be held at Lord's) attracted a crowd of 26,500, the largest attendance for any county cricket game other than a one-day final since 1953.^{[citation needed]}

By the end of the 2009 Twenty Cup, the ECB had decided to implement a larger competition for the Twenty20 format of the game. The Twenty20 English Premier League was a proposed cricket league to be run by the ECB. The league was to consist of 18 county teams and two overseas teams divided into two divisions of ten teams each. It was rumoured that the two overseas teams were to be a side fielded by Allen Stanford of the West Indies and the winners of the Indian Premier League.^[2] After the disgrace of Stanford, this tournament was scrapped. The establishment of the Friends Life t20 contributed to the discontinuation of the Pro40 League,^[2] and a second Twenty20 League (a revamped version of the outgoing Twenty20 Cup) to be held in July, August and September, played on Friday evenings.^[3][4] This did not happen, and instead a modified 40 over league, the Clydesdale Bank 40 was implemented.

The t20 format of the game was introduced in 2010 (see 2010 Friends Provident t20). The competition ran from 1 June 2010 until the finals day at The Rose Bowl on 14 August 2010. The eighteen counties were split into two regions, North and South, with the top four teams from each group progressing to the quarter-final knockout stage. The competition was won by Hampshire Royals, who beat Essex Eagles in the semi-finals, and Somerset in the final, by virtue of losing fewer wickets in a tied match. The 2012 season saw a reduction in pool matches from 16 to 10 as the 18 first class counties were divided into three geographical divisions.

Competition format[link]

There are 18 clubs competing for the t20 title. The 18 clubs are initially split into 2 (North and South) groups, containing 9 teams in each. This forms the "group stage" of the tournament. ^[5] During the group stage (from June to August) each club plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 16 games. Teams receive two points for a win, one point for a tie and one point if the match is abandoned. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then net run rate. At the end of the group stage, the top four teams from each group enter the knockout stage.^[6] The 2012 season will see the return of three regional groups of six teams reducing the amount of group stage games to ten to be played with the top two teams in each group plus the two third-placed teams with the best records progress to the quarter-final stage.^[7]

The counties are able to register Twenty20 specialist players for the competition, and 2 overseas ("unqualified") players.^[8]

Scott Bernardo Styris (born 10 July 1975) is an Australian-born New Zealand cricketer. An allrounder, Styris is an aggressive right-handed middle order batsman and a right-arm medium pace bowler.

Educated at Hamilton Boys' High School, Styris has represented Auckland and Northern Districts since 1994/95. He was originally just a seam bowler and only started to concentrate on his batting after a knee injury. Nicknamed "The Pig", he has become a crowd favourite, especially at Eden Park.

Styris has played for Hamilton in the Hawke Cup.

Scott Styris was bought by the Deccan Chargers for the IPL 2008 season. He went for $175,000 in the player auction on February 20, 2008.

At the 2011 IPL Auctions Scott Styris was bought by the Chennai Super Kings for $200,000 and will represent the side in the forthcoming tournament.

International career[link]

Debut[link]

Styris made his debut for New Zealand in a One Day International at Rajkot in 1999/2000. His maiden wicket was that of Sachin Tendulkar, one of 3 wickets for the match.

He had to wait until mid 2002 to play his first Test Match, against the West Indies at Grenada. His debut had almost come at Karachi 2 months earlier but the match was abandoned due to bomb blasts near the team hotel. In the Test at Grenada he batted at number 8 and top scored with 107. When it was New Zealand's time to bowl Styris came on and took 2 for 88. The first of his wickets was that of Brian Lara which gave him impressive maiden scalps in both formats of the game. He made an unbeaten 69 in the second innings to complete a dream debut but missed out on the man of the match award which went to Chris Gayle who scored a double hundred.

Continuation in the Excellency[link]

In the ODI series after the Tests he continued his form but this time with the ball, taking 6 for 25 at Trinidad. This broke the record for best One Day International bowling figures by a New Zealander.

At Mohali in 2003/04 against India he scored his second Test hundred with 119, one of 4 New Zealander's to make a century in the innings. Soon after he made his career best Test score of 170 against South Africa in Auckland, his innings taking just 220 balls.

In June 2004 New Zealand toured England and Styris impressed at Nottingham, making 108. He scored his fifth Test hundred at Auckland against the West Indies, an unbeaten 103 helping his side to win the Test.

When New Zealand chased what was then an ODI record of 322 in 2005/06 against Australia at Christchurch, Styris contribued 101.

A struggle with Injuries[link]

He then suffered a back injury missed out on the Sri Lanka series of December 2006. Making his return in the latter stages of the Commonwealth Bank series in Australia and then in the Chappell Hadlee series at home, Styris had done enough to be included New Zealand's World Cup squad.

Continued success in the 2007 World Cup[link]

Styris started the tournament with the man of the match award in a win over England at St Lucia. Chasing 210 for victory, Styris made an unbeaten 87 to guide his side home. His pugnacious batting style and distinctive gait led to former England captain Nasser Hussain referring to him as a "street fighter" from the commentary booth during the game. He made another half century in the game against Kenya and made 80 not out in a successful run chase against the home side. In the Super Eight stage the New Zealanders played Sri Lanka and Styris top-scored with 111 not out. The second top scorer in the innings made just 31. It was his second ever World Cup century; he scored one in 2003.

Struggle with form in test cricket and subsequent retirement[link]

Shortly after the world cup Styris' form dropped of contributing to injuries and not enough practice due to the injuries. He then participated in a test series against South Africa in 2007 but was dropped from the test squad

Continued Participation in ODI's[link]

He then continued to participate in ODI's and took part when the English cricket team were touring New Zealand in January to February 2008 and the Subsequent Return tour he participated well in both series with the bat but not much with the ball.

A return to the team (2010)[link]

Styris aged 35 and competing for a competitive Medium Pace All-rounder slot with Grant Elliott was selected for the Tri-series in Sri Lanka August 2010 he scored 88 runs in the first ODI.^[2] Scott Styris completed his comeback by showing a bowling performance in the next match against Sri Lanka when he took the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara ^[3] However after the tournament he suffered a back stress fracture during training and missed the series against Bangladesh and India. As part of his rehabilitation programme Styris took part and captained the New Zealand team in the 2010 Hong Kong Cricket Sixes ^[4] Styris missed the five-match series against Banglaesh as New Zealand were whitewashed 4-0 because Styris was recuparating from his injury. He returned to the team against India in December 2010 and scored 59 in the second ODI to lift the New Zealand total to 258.

County Cricket[link]

In 2005 he signed with Middlesex and stayed with them for the 2006 season as well where he deputised for the county captain Ben Hutton in several matches. He received his county cap during the 2006 season. He signed a 2 month contract at Durham County Cricket Club from 1 June 2007. He was bought to play for the IPL 2009 champions Deccan Chargers, which is a Hyderabad based Indian Premier League franchise. In 2010 Styris played for Essex County Cricket Club in the Friends Provident t20 competition and will return to the club for the 2011 season.

Retirement from international cricket[link]

In 2008, Styris announced his retirement from Test and first-class cricket to concentrate on the shorter formats of the game. Having considered himself as a one-day specialist, he wanted to still be considered for 2011 Cricket World Cup. He announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on 24 June 2011.^[5]

Graham Richard Napier (born 6 January 1980 in Colchester, Essex) is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium fast bowler.^[1] Napier has played first-class cricket for his home county of Essex since the outset of his senior career in 1997. Between 1997 and 1999 Napier played in four Youth Test matches in England against Zimbabwe, South Africa (twice) and Australia's respective under-19 teams. He was also a member of the 1998 U-19 Cricket World Cup-winning squad. Was on the books of Ipswich Town as a goalkeeper and played for a season on loan at Felixstowe Town.

Playing Style[link]

Graham Napier is a fast-medium bowler, whose stock delivery reaches between 85mph-90mph. Napier has displayed a slower ball in Twenty20 games which has proved hard to spot. As a batsman, Napier can be among the most deadly not only in domestic cricket but in world cricket also. He has twice hit 16 sixes in an innings, once in a Twenty20 match, and once in a County Championship match. His fielding has been known to be slightly below par, but it can be put down to the fact that Napier is very injury prone and he cannot afford to throw himself around.

Napier participated in the 2003, 2004 and 2006 Twenty20 Cups, in which he aided his Essex team to the 2004 Quarter Finals.

In a Twenty20 cup match against Sussex on 24 June 2008, Napier scored 152 not out from 58 balls. The innings set a number of records, notably the highest individual score in a T20 innings in England, and in the domestic Twenty20 competition; the highest number of sixes in an individual Twenty20 innings (16); the most runs scored in boundaries in an individual Twenty20 innings (136 runs, scored as 10 fours, and 16 sixes).^[2] It also broke the record for most sixes in a domestic one-day innings, and tied the record for most sixes in any domestic innings, tying the record set by Andrew Symonds, during a County Championship game in 1995.

He was signed by the Mumbai Indians for the 2009 IPL Season for an undisclosed amount.

In March 2009, Napier was called up to the England Lions squad for the first time since 2004. Geoff Miller, one of the selectors, said "the selectors felt this was a good opportunity for us to have a closer look at him within the England set-up".^[3] On 1 May 2009, Napier was confirmed as a member of the 15 man England squad for the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup on the same day as he made his first appearance for the Mumbai Indians.

First class[link]

On 19 May 2011, Napier equalled the record for most sixes scored in a first-class innings.^[4] He hit 16 sixes as part of a 130-ball 196 for Essex. It was his first first class innings for 11 months, after being sidelined with a back injury. He hit 103 runs from the last 29 balls of his innings. After his innings, Napier told BBC Essex that he considers himself as mainly a bowler.

Roderick "Rory" Keith Ogilvy Bremner,^[1] FKC (born 6 April 1961) is a Scottish impressionist, playwright and comedian, noted for his work in political satire and impressions of prominent British politicians.^[2] He is also known for his work on Mock the Week as a panellist (for Series 1 and 2), award-winning show Rory Bremner...Who Else? and sketch comedy series Bremner, Bird and Fortune, which features veteran comedians John Bird and John Fortune.

Early life[link]

Born in Edinburgh, Rory Bremner was born to Major Donald Stuart Ogilvy Bremner (December 1907–1979) (who was 53 years old at Rory's birth) and his second wife Ann Simpson (1922–2001).^[1] He has an older brother and an older half-sister (from his father's first marriage). Bremner was educated at Clifton Hall School and Wellington College and then studied Modern Languages at King's College London, graduating with a degree in French and German in 1984.^[3]

Career[link]

While at university, Bremner worked in the cabaret circuit in the evenings and was involved in the drama club.^[4] He first came into the limelight in 1985, when his single, N-N-Nineteen Not Out (released under the name, "The Commentators") was a big hit in the British charts. It was a parody of Paul Hardcastle's number one hit, 19, with Bremner impersonating cricket commentators, including Richie Benaud and Brian Johnston, and replacing references to the Vietnam War with references to the England cricket team's disastrous 1984 home series against the West Indies in which the England captain David Gower had averaged 19.^[5]

Bremner contributed to Spitting Image and Week Ending and by 1987 he had his own BBC Two show: Now - Something Else. He later moved to Channel 4 with Rory Bremner, Who Else? where his output became more satirical and the sporting commentators gradually came to represent a smaller proportion of his repertoire. Having teamed up with veterans, John Bird and John Fortune, he now hosts Bremner, Bird and Fortune, which (along with its predecessor Rory Bremner, Who Else?) has won numerous awards. Occasional one-off specials are also shown, with Bremner impersonating Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and various other government figures. In the 1990s he became a semi-regular cameo turn on the Channel 4 improvisation show Whose Line Is It Anyway? and in 2005 he was a team captain on the BBC2 improvisational satire show Mock The Week. Bremner now regularly performs on Sunday AM, impersonating politicians, with a review of recent political events. He has also presented a BBC Radio 4 series, Rory Bremner's International Satirists, in which Bremner talks to comedians and impressionists from various European countries. In September 2009, he presented a BBC Four documentary, Rory Bremner and the Fighting Scots, about the history of Scots serving in the British Army.^[6] In the run-up to the 2010 UK General Election he undertook a 20-date Election Battlebus Tour,^[7] his first stand-up comedy tour in five years.

Bremner has translated three operas into English: Der Silbersee by Kurt Weill, Carmen by Georges Bizet^[8] and Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach.^[9][10] He has also translated a Bertolt Brecht play into English.^[11] He appeared on the programme on BBC Four in 2012 called "The Story of Light Entertainment", when it was about impressionists.

Strictly Come Dancing[link]

Bremner took part in the 2011 series of Strictly Come Dancing.^[12]. His dance partner in the series was Erin Boag.

Personal life[link]

Bremner's first marriage was to Susan Shackleton, a teacher, in 1987, the couple divorcing in 1995. On 11 September 1999 Rory married Tessa Campbell Fraser, and has two daughters, Ava and Lila. They live in Oxfordshire.

Bremner supported Reg Keys in the 2005 election when he stood against Tony Blair as an anti-war candidate.

He was awarded Honorary Life Membership of King's College London Students' Union in the early 2000s. In 2005 he was made a Fellow of his alma mater King's College London.^[13] Additionally, he was awarded an honorary fellowship by Queen Mary, University of London in 2008.^[14]

He was placed at 49 on ITV's list of TV's 50 Greatest Stars, and in 2008 received the James Joyce Award of the Literary and Historical Society.

Bremner speaks French, German and Spanish. He is also studying Russian in order to read Russian poetry better in the original.^[15]

Bremner has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and has openly addressed it in interviews. In May 2011, he presented a short programme "ADHD and Me" on Radio 4 about living and coping with the condition.^[16]

In 2009, Bremner was the subject of the series Who Do You Think You Are? in a quest to research about his father, whom he barely knew. His father had served in the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment during the war and was often away from home. Bremner traveled to 's-Hertogenbosch, the Dutch city liberated by the East Lancs, amongst other places to retrace his father's footsteps. Together with his brother, they traced their father's ancestry and discovered that their great-grandfather John Ogilvy had served as a surgeon general during the Crimean War and was later posted to various British colonies.^[1]

Prank call to Margaret Beckett[link]

In February 2007 he entered the news after it emerged that he had managed to get through to Margaret Beckett whilst impersonating Gordon Brown, with her revealing "embarrassing indiscretions".^[17]

On 3 May 2005, Bremner dressed up as Michael Howard and walked along the campaign trail in the marginal seat of Wellingborough. He eventually caught up with Howard himself.

In April 2007, he was also involved in The Big Brecht Fest at the Young Vic Theatre in London celebrating the work of German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, where a series of newly-translated versions of some of his short plays were performed. One of the plays that was staged, the short comedy of manners A Respectable Wedding, was retranslated by Bremner, who also penned the title to the series. His translation had a positive reception from critics, although it did draw the ire of some for the removal of any class-conflict edge to the play, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins as a squirming farce that relies heavily on the comic value of embarrassment.
