"It's Always Orange Day in California" - Peerless Quartet (1916)
"It's Always Orange Day in California" - Peerless Quartet (1916)
IT'S ALWAYS ORANGE DAY IN CALIFORNIA (from "Canary Cottage") (Earl Carroll) (Male Quartet with orchestra) Peerless Quartet (Henry Burr, Albert Campbell, Steve Porter, John Meyer) Victor, 18102-A, 1916. Note: a reposting of an earlier video with better sound and picture quality. please watch at 720p. This song, promoting California and its legendary "golden" climate, is from a musical play, "Canary Cottage," the first New York performance of which was at the opening of the Morosco Theater in February, 1917. (A review from the New York Times can be found on the internet.) The "Orange Day" song was the play's grand finale, set in an orange grove, with the performers tossing paper oranges to the audience. "California! You were a golden country long before a man set foot on you. California! You had your golden poppies when Cabrillo came in 1542! California! You had your golden mountains back in 1849! And you've still a golden plume, For you wear a golden bloom Of orange blossoms all the time! It's always Orange Day in California! Forget your winter snow, Come out and see them grow! The golden sun is here to warm you! For every golden fruit, there's a golden heart, to boot! Become a booster! We'll make you used to The golden climate out this way . . . far out this way! So, hop a train, Gol-darn ya'!, And come out to California, On Golden Orange Day! California! Surely, the golden heavens lost the bit of land that bears your name! California! Surely, the angels thought that you and Paradise were one and both the same! California! Surely, the gods were happy when they watched your golden birth. Then an angel, old and great, Christened you the "Golden State," The brightest spot upon the Earth." I hope you enjoy the slideshow of mid-winter scenes of California!
