Tenkara fly fishing (Japanese: テンカラ, literally: "from heaven", or "from the skies") is a traditional type of fly fishing practiced in Japan. Primarily used for mountain stream trout fishing, tenkara is one of the most popular methods of angling among fresh-water mountain anglers in Japan.
Tenkara has been virtually unknown outside Japan until the first company to introduce and popularize tenkara outside Japan, Tenkara USA, was founded in April 2009 in San Francisco, California. However, new companies including Tenkara Rod Co., Temple Fork Outfitters, Wetfly Back Country, and Dragontail Tenkara now offer additional rods to suit the needs of different anglers.
Tenkara fishing originated in Japan at least 200 years ago. The first reference to tenkara fly-fishing was in 1878 in a book called "Diary of climbing Mt. Tateyama" written by Ernest Mason Satow, an able linguist and British diplomat during the early modernization of Japan. Tenkara fly-fishing originated with professional fishermen in the mountain streams of Japan who found it an effective method of catching the local fish, Yamame, Iwana and Amago.

In this video Daniel Galhardo, founder of Tenkara USA, shares six basic techniques for tenkara. These techniques were taught to Daniel directly from the main tenkara anglers in Japan, namely: Dr. Hisao Ishigaki, Sakakibara Masami, Katsutoshi Amano and Yuzo Sebata. After learning the techniques and understanding the Japanese tenkara techniques, Daniel has synthesized the knowledge and developed them into a system of tenkara techniques listed below. . 1) Dead-drift: allow the fly to naturally drift with the current 2) Pausing: move the rod tip upstream from the fly to pause the fly in place for a couple of seconds in spots where fish are likely to be, such as in front of rocks. 3) Pause-and-Drift: Put the rod tip upstream from the tenkara fly to pause it for a second or two, then let it dri...

This video is part of a blog post on Teton Tenkara. I fish a high gradient mountain stream catching wild, native cutthroat trout. I use an All Fishing Buy Hirame-ML-3909 that I've modified to work as a zoom rod. Line: 9' #3 fluorocarbon level line. Flies were beadhead jig hook flies.
This is a beautiful mountain stream where I caught nothing for almost three hours. Turned over a rock to see what bugs were predominant on the water. Lots of sow bugs and caddis so I tied on a Bead Head Hare's Ear and a Utah Killer Bug. It was a perfect storm because the water was off color so the fish couldn't see you and they were targeting exactly what I had on. In the last hole, I caught over ten Cutties, netting eight of them with on 17". The best day of nymph fishing I have ever had. Using the Tenkara USA Iwana as usual with 11 ft of level line and 2 ft of tippet. No strike indicator. Notice how the line would go taught before I set the hook. On this day, they were barely taking the flies so I set the hook when I saw the line go tight. I hope you enjoy!

https://www.thegrommet.com/tenkara-rod This simple fly fishing rod, discovered by The Grommet, takes fly fishing back to basics, proving a rod, a line, and a fly are all you need to master the sport. Fly-fishing can be an intimidating sport, but Tenkara offers a simple, less expensive fly fishing alternative. All you need to do is extend the telescoping fishing rod, connect the handcrafted line, and put the fly out. It’s uncomplicated, and the reel-less design is quiet, elegant, and suited to enjoying nature. Tenkara is made with high-quality cork and other lightweight materials. It’s similar to a traditional fly fishing rod, but much lighter, more portable, and easier to learn. The rods shrink down to less than two feet and weigh almost nothing—the heaviest model is 3.4 ounces (lighte...

There's a hole in my life
and I don't know the right way to close it
things I believed in have all crumbled one by one
might makin' right, cries in the night
but we chose it
I've been decieved and I will
wait here till they come
they will come
and the right hand knows
where the left one goes
the hammer comes down -
nobody knows
please take a number, get in line
I heard it on the radio
I heard it on the wind you know
hurricane about to blow
over and over again
Heard it on the radio
knew it in my heart you know
saw it on a tv show
saw it all fall apart
I remember a time when they
drew me a line and I crossed it
you left me hanging
you ran for higher ground
it was yours it was mine
it was pure it was fine
and we lost it
or was it only that we never
looked around - look around
and the right hand knows
where the left one goes
the hammer comes down -
nobody knows
please take a number, get in line
I heard it on the radio
I heard it on the wind you know
hurricane about to blow
over and over again
Heard it on the radio
knew it in my heart you know
saw it on a tv show
saw it all fall apart
Is this all just illusion?
Is this all just a dream?
Do you want fission or fusion
or do you want to talk to me
talk to me, talk to me, baby talk to me -
or do you want to scream?
