Daniel G. Amen, M.D. is a child and adult psychiatrist, self-help advisor, author and medical director of the Amen Clinic.^[1] He has done work in evaluating psychiatric and neurological patients with the help of SPECT scanning, especially in the area of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Career and work[link]

Amen is licensed to practice medicine in California, Arizona, Washington, Virginia and New York.^{[citation needed]} He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and the APA's 1987 recipient of the Marie H. Eldredge Award for the best research work.^[2] He is the CEO and medical director of The Amen Clinics, Inc. in Newport Beach, California, San Francisco, California, Bellevue, Washington and Reston, Virginia. Amen is also a member of the American Neuropsychiatric Association ^[3]

Amen is a volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.^[4] He received his undergraduate degree from the Christian Southern California College (now Vanguard University of Southern California) and his doctor of medicine degree from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine.

Amen has written 28 books, including four New York Time’s Best Sellers, and produced six national public television specials that have aired 40,000 times across the United States.

Amen's classification[link]

The Amen's classification was created by Amen for classifying psychiatric patients into particular groups of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Amen classification system defines six different subtypes of ADHD.^{[5] [6][7]}

The Amen's classification consists of the following ADHD subtypes:

• Type I - Classic ADD (ADHD)
• Type II - Inattentive ADD
• Type III - Over-Focused ADD
• Type IV - Temporal Lobe ADD
• Type V - Limbic ADD

Criticism[link]

SPECT[link]

Neurologist Michael Greicius, who runs the Stanford University memory clinic, said: "SPECT scans are not sufficiently sensitive or specific to be useful in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease...The PBS airing of Amen's program provides a stamp of scientific validity to work which has no scientific validity."^[8]

ADHD[link]

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV recognizes only three types of ADHD and would consider the symptoms described in Amen's types 3-6 as indicating comorbid conditions. Many mental health professionals do not accept Amen's definitions of ADHD.

In addition, Amen's ADHD treatment methods emphasize non-standard use of dietary supplements (which he calls "nutraceutical solutions"). Controversially,he sells these supplements on his website (e.g., a 30-day supply of "attention support solution" is sold for $39.95; some patients are directed to take multiple supplements). His expensive, repeated brain scans and supplements are typically not covered by insurance programs, so costs for patients are typically high.

Weight loss[link]

Part of Amen's work is the relationship of diet and weight loss to ADHD and other disorders. The scientific validity of this aspect of his work have been criticized. It has been asserted that there are no clinical studies supporting his results. Although he has not conducted (nor cites) any research specifically validating his brain-based weight-loss scheme, Amen has responded by increasing the number of references in his latest book Change Your Brain, Change Your Body.^[9] The review of this book in the American Journal of Psychiatry underscores the fact that "he has not subjected his treatment approaches to the level of systematic scientific scrutiny expected for scientifically based medical practice".^[10]

In 2005, on Quackwatch.org, a nonprofit organization that investigates what they consider to be health-related frauds, myths, fads and fallacies, the retired military physician Dr. Harriet Hall criticized Amen for defying science and common sense, and for having turned into a big business selling vitamin supplements.^[9]

In a response to criticism, Amen has described his work as follows:

"The Amen Clinics tracks treatment response among its patients. 85% of our patients report a high degree of satisfaction with our services. We are not a typical psychiatric clinic. We typically see patients who have failed 3 or 4 other mental health professionals, and who have an average of 3.5 psychiatric disorders using standard DSM diagnostic measures. No one keeps response rates on such a complex diagnostic group, yet our results are very encouraging." ^[11]

Mary Anne Hobbs (born 16 May 1964 in Preston, Lancashire, England) is an English DJ and music journalist from Garstang, Lancashire. She launched a new Primetime show on Xfm on 9 July 2011.

Early career[link]

In the 1980s, Hobbs lived on a bus in a carpark in Hayes, Hillingdon with the hard rock band Heretic before becoming a journalist for Sounds Magazine at age 19.^[1] She later went to work for the NME before going on to help found Loaded Magazine. While with the NME she served as a freelance U.K. music news correspondent in Canada on CBC Radio One, filing a weekly report for a program called The Beat. This contributed to her big break in radio with BBC GLR, working alongside Mark Lamarr.

She then worked at XFM before being headhunted by BBC Radio 1 after a confrontational interview on XFM with Radio 1's Trevor Dann.^[2] She shot a TV series about global biker culture 'Mary Anne's Bikes' in Japan, America, Russia, India, and Europe for BBC Choice & BBC World in 2003, and presented the World Superbikes series 2005 for British Eurosport. She also compèred the Leeds Festival between 1999 and 2003.

Radio shows[link]

A fan of rock, metal (and with a love of motorbikes) from an early age, Hobbs fronted the Radio 1 Rock Show and the experimental / electronic Breezeblock on BBC Radio 1 for fourteen years. In September 2006 the Breezeblock name was dropped for the title 'Experimental'. Most recently, Hobbs has been a notable champion of the dubstep and grime genres. Her 2 hour special 'Dubstep Warz' on BBC Radio 1 in January 2006 is considered the global tipping point for the dubstep sound. She released a groundbreaking dark electronic compilation album on Planet Mu records entitled Warrior Dubz in October 2006, drawing the sonic parallels between dubstep, grime, dark dancefloor, techno, d&b and hip hop. In June 2007, Hobbs curated the UK Dubstep showcase at the Sónar festival with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode9, taking the sound out of club environments and onto an international festival stage in front of 8,500 people for the very first time. On 7 February 2008 the "Dubstep Souljahs" documentary she made for BBC Radio 1 aired inside Pete Tong's In New Music We Trust show.^[3] Her second compilation album, Evangeline, was released on 16 June 2008 on Planet Mu records.^[4] This coincided with her second Sonar Festival Stage featuring Shackleton, Flying Lotus and Mala from Digital Mystikz. In 2009 she returned to the festival with Joker, The Gaslamp Killer and Martyn, and in 2010 again with Flying Lotus and also with new British producers/DJs Roska and Joy Orbison.

On 23 July 2010 Hobbs announced on her Myspace page that she was leaving the BBC. She spent a year mentoring students at University of Sheffield Union of Students.

Mary Anne Hobbs returned to radio in the primetime slot (7-10pm Saturdays) she always covered on 9 July 2011, broadcasting from Xfm in Manchester. On 5 September 2011 she began hosting the relaunched "Music:Response" show across the xfm network, Monday to Thursday from 8-11pm.

Hobbs is mentioned in the Half Man Half Biscuit song 'Nove On The Sly' from the album 'Trouble Over Bridgwater'.^[5]

Anne Hobbs (born 21 August 1959 in Nottingham) is a British former professional tennis player.

Tennis career[link]

Hobbs represented Great Britain in the Wightman Cup and Federation Cup from 1978 to 1989.^[1] She was ranked as the top British player for periods during her 12 year career and achieved a best WTA ranking of 33 in singles and 6 in doubles.

Although primarily a doubles specialist, reaching the final of the Australian Open in 1983 and the U.S. Open in 1984 with Wendy Turnbull and the Australian Open Mixed Doubles in 1983 with Andrew Castle, she won singles titles at Indianapolis in 1983 and in Auckland in 1985 ^[2] and the British Closed in 1985.

Hobbs' industrious serve and volley game earned her singles victories over Virginia Wade, Rosie Casals, Jo Durie, Carling Bassett, and Zina Garrison, among other top ranked players of her time. She now works as a tennis coach and consultant in the area of sports psychology.^[3]

Cameron Russell (born June 14, 1987^{[citation needed]}) is an American fashion model.

Early life[link]

Cameron Russell was born in Boston, and raised in Cambridge. Her mother is Robin Chase, founder of ZipCar. Russell displayed an interest in politics at an early age, and friends who had worked on the Clinton Presidential election campaign arranged a meeting on June 5, 1998 (when she was 10) with Bill Clinton after he delivered a speech at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His advice to her was to stay in school, get to know as many different types of people as she could, and to understand their dreams and aspirations.^{[citation needed]} She graduated from the Commonwealth School in 2005.

Modeling career[link]

Russell's mother had a friend who worked at Ford Models agency, and Russell decided to sign with that agency in 2004. She later moved on to DNA Model Management in 2006, and is currently represented by Women Management with whom she signed in 2008.^[1]

Since beginning her modeling career part-time at the age of 16, Russell has worked with numerous successful photographers including Steven Meisel, Craig McDean, and Nick Knight among others, in such magazines as Vogue, Paris Vogue, Vogue Italia, W, Self Service and Numéro.^[1] She has featured in advertising campaigns for companies including Calvin Klein, Armani, Oscar de la Renta, and Yves Saint Laurent.^[1]

Russell has featured in runway fashion shows for designers including Shiatzy Chen, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Ralph Lauren, and Diane von Fürstenberg.^[2]

She briefly attended Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, her mother's alma mater, before transferring to Columbia after her freshman year.
