Anthony Newley - Pop Goes The Weasel
1961 Pop Goes The Weasel/ Bee Bom (Decca F11362, reached #12 in UK) - interpretation of the nursery rhyme
Mentioned in the video (and, which is perhaps more likely for a poem from the East End of London), if "pop goes the weasel" is taken as Cockney rhyming slang, the "weasel" that goes "pop" is an item of value that the worker pawns, probably after spending the week's wages (always given on a Saturday). The "serious" Cockney uses "pop" to mean pawning or the redeeming of a pawned item, while the word "weasel" means "coat" (derived from "weasel and stoat"). Cockney slang also uses 'pop' to mean 'go away' ("Pop off!") or 'to hit' ("I'll pop you one!"). Another possibility is that "weasel" is a corruption of "whistle" and means "suit" (in this case being derived from "whistle and flute"). In either interpretation, the rhyme describes the pawning of the worker's only valuable items — the "Sunday best" clothing — after exhausting the week's wages on the food items such as rice and treacle, which, though cheap, were and are fundamentally useless to anyone if the buyer is poor and has nothing to eat them with. It is thought, however, that early "quack" doctors would have prescribed treacle as a sort of medicine, and gullible purchasing workers that were prone to illness due to exposure would doubtless have spent their savings on trying to maintain their and their children's health.

Anthony Newley - "The Joker" 1965
This short but groovy version of "The Joker" from "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd", was recorded for Newley's Album "Who Can I Turn To", 1965. "The Joker" was one of his most beloved songs - and symbol for himself - "they don`t see his painted heart break...!"
All film clips of Anthony Newley are from "Playboy After Dark" 1969.
During watching this show (with Sammy Davis jr), I suddenly realized, that Anthony Newley was looking sometimes very unhappy, even sad, especially when Sammy Davis jr. was singing a medley of his hitsongs. I think for Newley it always was a permanent wound, to see that others, like Tony Bennett, Andy Williams and especially Sammy Davis jr. had the great success with his songs . But he always made a funny, smiling face, but how he looked inside - we can only think and imagine.
Of course in this time his marriage with Joan Collins was crumbling, but this is only one aspect of his sadness. More important is his poor childhood, the strange family surroundings. His whole life was a permanent struggle for survival & appreciation and influenced his whole work and caused his sadness and in the end his illness.
"The poor painted fool " - therefore I cut in between filmclips of Mario Lanza in "Pagliacci" singing "Vesti La Giubba"(from his last movie "For The First Time", 1959).
"Ridi Pagliacci..." "Laugh Pagliacci"- this came to my mind when I saw the sad face of Anthony Newley in "Playboy After Dark." Laughing although you want cry !
And in MY provoking opinion Sammy Davis jr. always (ab)used Anthony Newley's creative abilities and artistic genius to refresh his tumbeling career. From "What Kind Of Fool Am I" to "The Candy Man". Anthony Newley was always so proud that the the GREAT Sammy D. jr. was singing his songs and was becoming his dear friend, that he never (or too late) realized that he only was exploited (emotionally and artistically) by him.
In my opinion his version of "Stop The World..." is not so overwhelming, although he pressed out a new song for this show from Anthony Newley & Leslie Bricusse - "Life is a woman". Why he - Sammy Davis jr. - needed a new song ?? Even its inventor - Anthony Newley - needed no new song in his own musical !!
And Sammy Davis jr.destroyed his "friendship" with Anthony Newley, after Newley dared to refuse his will to direct his show of "Stop the World..".
I know some will hate me because of this, but this is my point of view and Sammy Davis jr is not sacrosanct !
And Sammy Davis jr is not the only artist who exploited Anthony Newley's creativity without any scruple.
The dance sequences are from Bob Fosse's "Sweet Charity" (1969). A man who also was a big disappointment for Anthony Newley , because he had stolen some of his ideas ! But this is ANOTHER story !

Anthony Newley Live
The Greatest British Entertainer Ever! Live in Cabaret It is time for a Live Anthony Newley DVD. This would be a great concert for DVD as it highlights the many talents of Mr Newley. He left us far too soon but his body of work remains and it is time to recognise the man voted Las Vegas Entertainer of the year 3 times! This wonderful rare song about lost love says so much about of Newley as a song writer and performer.

Anthony Newley " What Kind Of Fool Am I" (1993)
The worlds of Anthony Newley and Federico Fellini are very similar - represented by their favorite metaphor - The CIRCUS. The Circus, symbol for the never ending circle of life. The Circus as own microcosmos and a parallel world to human life. Clowns (im)personate people of real life - the good, the bad, the poor, the rich, the clever ones and the FOOLS. It is the playground for illusion and desillusion. In one aspect Newley's and Fellini's views are very different:
Despite desperation and despair Fellini sees an optimistic end, a light at the end of the tunnel, the good overruled the bad and hope is winning.
Anthony Newley sees no hope and no redemption in the big game of life. The loud, hypocrite roaring crowd kills everybody, especially those who have their own visions and ideals . You can see this pessimistic view in Newley's whole work.
In Fellini's "La Strada" the gentle tightrope walker(!) and clown "Il Matto" (the mad one, the FOOL) is killed by the strong, loud and jealous "Great Zampano." And this is my metaphor for the "Funny Man", "The Fool" Anthony Newley.
Therefore I combine Anthony Newley and Fellini's "La Strada".
A spin off my video "Goodbyes & Anthony Newley".
Richard Basehart is "Matto", Anthony Quinn "The Great Zampano", Giulietta Masina "Gelsomina"
