Pete Wendling (June 6, 1888 – April 7, 1974) was an American composer and pianist, born in New York City to German immigrants.
He started his working life as a carpenter, but gained fame during the mid 1910s as a popular music composer - producing such hits as Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula, Take Me To The Land Of Jazz, Take Your Girlie To The Movies, Felix The Cat, and Oh What A Pal Is Mary.
More however, Wendling was also one of the top pianists of his era, and set a long-standing record when he appeared at the London Hippodrome for 8 consecutive weeks. He joined the Rhythmodik Music Roll Company in 1914, and started to record his performances on paper rolls for player pianos. In 1916 he recorded for American Piano Company (Ampico). In 1918, he joined the largest piano roll company, QRS, and rapidly became one of their most popular artists - his distinctive yet always fresh performances constantly topping their best-selling lists and are still in production as of 2003 - over 80 years since they were produced.

Here a great medley roll from the teens with some of the lively tunes from the musical comedy shows of the day. In the hot early Wendling style, this dance tempo roll was surely the souce of much "rug cutting" back in those days as family and friends gathered 'round. Enjoy this markedly "Pete" performance played on my 1925 Stroud Duo Art Pianola, and while you are at it, hit the "subscribe button", so you don't miss any more. Thanks !
I know the audio is awful; I will redo it when I find my good mike.
Here is a great old QRS player piano roll with a classic performance by the gifted composer and pianist, Pete Wendling. As with most Wendling performances, it starts out fairly conventional, but really ramps up along the way. No two choruses are alike. Enjoy this great old Ruby melody as presented here on the 1925 Stroud Duo Art Pianola. There are more of these of these classics to come, so subscribe now and don't miss one. Enjoy !
Here is an interesting early Ampico 1-step piece, a "Stoddard-Ampico" roll. This is an excellent re-cut. http://www.amica.org/Live/Publications/Past-Bulletin-Articles/EvolutionOfTheAmpico.pdf http://www.pianola.org/reproducing/reproducing_ampico.cfm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aba_Daba_Honeymoon

The year was 1917, the great war in Europe was cranking up, and Tin Pan Alley was pumping out tune after tune almost daily. Ray Goetz and Jean Schwartz were right in the thick of it and wrote this little ditty about the simplicity of generating the volume of pop tunes that were produced in that period. This is a also a great early Wendling performance. Enjoy !
From 1921, comes this snappy little tune written by Kendis, Brockman & Weslyn played by the talented Pete Wendling. Watching his right hand may make you dizzy, but to understand that he was capable of playing like this, makes one appreciate the talent and finger dexterity of the man. Enjoy this Fox Trot as presented on my 1925 Stroud Duo Art Pianola, and subscribe to this channel for more classic rolls to come. Thanks for viewing!

Pete Wendling is mostly known for his brilliant and prolific work as a piano roll arranger for QRS player piano rolls. He was also a masterful pianist. Here is one of the six recordings he ever made--a novelty (he billed it as such) on the themes of composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski cut in 1923. The transfer and restoration were carried out by Adam Swanson. If you know of any other copies of Wendling's recorded work, please get in touch with me.

My 1916 Stroud Pianola Metrostyle Themodist Playing Sweet Lovin' Mama Played By Pete Wendling. A QRS Word Roll number 2178; This was recorded using a Canon HF S21 HD Camera using a Canon 5.1 surround microphone and encoded into Microsoft Windows Media with Dolby 5.1 surround. Skip to half time for Mandolin mode and words.
In my opinion, not one of Pete's better rolls. Even though this roll was made in 1922, when Pete was still making his own rolls at QRS, this roll does not show any of the usual "extras" that he was famous for. Yet, I have archived this here because nobody else has, and perhaps SOMEONE might like the song itself. Not one of my favorites though, and summed up my feelings at the end when I said, "Thank goodness it's over." ;-)
