STORYLINE
The leaders of the two parties backing Greece's coalition government called on their deputies on Saturday to back legislation that calls for harsh new austerity measures - essential if Greece is to get a new bailout deal worth 130 (b) billion euros (171.6 (b) billion US dollars) and stave off bankruptcy.
Ministers and lawmakers from former Prime Minister George Papandreou's socialist PASOK party arrived at parliament on Saturday morning to discuss the measures with their leader.
Conservative leader Antonis Samaras also addressed his MPs in parliament.
Both Papandreou and Samaras told their respective parliamentary groups that there is no real alternative to voting for the legislation, except pushing Greece to bankruptcy.
Samaras said Greece's priority was to "get over this hurdle without causing greater damage and without preventing the passage of the new loan agreement, with which we can start moving from chaos to stability."
Samaras had opposed the initial bailout, worth 110 (b) billion, that Papandreou, as Prime Minister, had negotiated in May 2010, saying the measures it contained would worsen the crises and result in a deep recession.
He now says he feels vindicated, but that conditions have worsened so much lately, due to the bad handling of the crisis by the previous socialist government, that social cohesion is at stake.
Samaras insisted the country must hold a snap election once the agreement is in place and the debt swap with private creditors is completed.
"Only with elections can political representation and Greece's bargaining position be strengthened," he said.
He added that he would not agree to the extension of the mandate of the coalition government.

The Agora Forum 2018, organized by Agora Dialogue in cooperation with the Athens Development and Governance Institute (ADGI- INERPOST), was held on 1–3 December 2018.
It brought together twenty participants from the government, private and educational sectors to discuss the very serious challenges faced by numerous democratic countries across the world and in particular in Europe.
Adopting a process of moderated round-table dialogue, participants discussed a number of foundational texts, including extracts from Plato’s Republic, Rousseau’s The Social Contract and Rawls’ A Theory of Justice, and through a mixed array of presentations and debate considered the impact on democratic institutions and civil society of ‘fake news’, globalization, new technologies and rising social and economic inequalities.
A presentation by Professor Louka T. Katseli of the Report of the Independent Commission for Sustainable Equality, an initiative of the European Parliament co-chaired by former Prime Minister of Denmark, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and Professor Katseli, formed a particular positive focus and an alternative road-map for European policy.
The group also benefited from presentations by Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou, Minister, Hellenic Ministry of Administrative Reconstruction, and representatives of Ernst & Young and IBM, who discussed the impact of technological innovation on jobs and income distribution and the role of the private sector in safeguarding democracy and promoting social cohesion.

STORYLINE
Greek cabinet ministers arrived at Parliament on Monday to approve key pension reforms, cutting payments and increasing retirement ages, part of the government's new economic austerity measures put in place to secure an international loan to stave off bankruptcy.
Eurozone leaders on Saturday gave the final approval for an 80 (b) billion euro (100 (b) billion US dollars) rescue package of loans to Greece for the next three years to stave off default.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also approved its part of the rescue package, loans of 30 (b) billion euros (38 (b) billion US dollars) on Sunday.
The international loans were the country's only shield against bankruptcy on May 19, when some nine (b) billion euros (11 (b) billion US dollars) in debt must be redeemed.
In return, Athens announced new painful austerity cuts over the next three years, prompting union anger and violent protests last week in which three people died.
Unions, which complain that low earners and pensioners are being unfairly targeted, said they were planning to stage another rally on Wednesday.
Greece's dire straits result from years of unbridled government overspending, the budget deficit reached 13.6 percent of annual output last year, combined with a public debt expected to reach 133.3 percent of gross domestic product in 2010.
The centre-left government has pledged to bring the deficit below the largely ignored EU limit of 3 percent of GDP in 2014.
Preliminary data released on Monday showed that the effort was well on track.
The finance ministry said the budget deficit reached 6.3 (b) billion euros in the January-April period, 41.8 percent less than in the first four months of 2009, and exceeding a targeted reduction of 35.1 percent.

"Greece's credibility is just as much in deficit as its government budget and its general fiscal position. There is none. But, that is not the issue. The issue at the moment, well, over the last year and a half, concerns the credibility of Europe. Let's not forget that Europe has tried to save Greece, in inverted comas, and avert the systemic crisis of the eurozone about 15 or 16 times, on 15 or 16 different summits. It has failed spectacularly. The political failure we are talking about is unprecedented in the annals of European history."
