The Dinner Party

The Dinner Party is an installation artwork by feminist artist Judy Chicago. Widely regarded as the first epic feminist artwork, it functions as a symbolic history of women in Western civilization. There are 39 elaborate place settings arranged along a triangular table for 39 mythical and historical famous women. Virginia Woolf, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Empress Theodora of Byzantium, and Georgia O'Keeffe are among the guests.

Each unique place-setting includes a hand-painted china plate, ceramic flatware and chalice, and a napkin with an embroidered gold edge. Each plate, except the one corresponding to Sojourner Truth, depicts a brightly-colored, elaborately styled vagina-esque form. The settings rest upon elaborately embroidered runners, executed in a variety of needlework styles and techniques. The dinner table stands on The Heritage Floor, made up of more than 2,000 white luster-glazed triangular-shaped tiles, each inscribed in gold scripts with the name of one of 999 women who have made a mark on history.

"The Dinner Party" is the 15th episode of the second season of The CW television series, The Vampire Diaries and the 37th episode of the series overall. It originally aired on February 17, 2011. The episode was written by Andrew Chambliss and directed by Marcos Siega.

Plot

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) are still at the Gilbert's lake house where Elena reads Jonathan's new journal she and Stefan found in the secret room of the house. Stefan is still mad at her for her decision to sacrifice herself to save her family and friends. While reading, Elena finds out that Stefan attacked Jonathan and tried to kill him but Jonathan did not die because of the Gilbert ring. Stefan starts telling Elena about his life after he first turn into a vampire and how different he was than he is now.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) plans to kill Elijah (Daniel Gillies) with the dagger that John (David Anders) gave him and he informs Stefan about it but they both hide it from Elena. Damon is at the Grill with Alaric (Matt Davis) and Andie (Dawn Olivieri) when Elijah comes in with Jenna (Sara Canning). Damon gets the opportunity and invites Elijah and everyone for dinner at the Salvatore house.

The Dinner Party is a one-act comedy written by Neil Simon, about marriage and divorce. This is Simon's 31st play.

Production

The Dinner Party had its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles, in December 1999 and then ran at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. in June and July 2000.

The play opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre on October 19, 2000 and closed on September 1, 2001 after 364 performances and 20 previews. Directed by John Rando, the cast featured Len Cariou (Andre Bouville), Veanne Cox (Yvonne Fouchet), Penny Fuller (Gabrielle Buonocelli), Jan Maxwell (Mariette Levieux), John Ritter (Claude) and Henry Winkler (Albert). The sets were by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Jane Greenwood and lighting by Brian MacDevitt.

Near the end of the run, Ritter and Winkler were replaced by Jon Lovitz and Larry Miller.

Fuller received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Background

In an interview in The New York Times (as reported by talkinbroadway.com), Simon said that "he was trying to write a play very different from anything he had done before, and that he 'had the concept of creating a farce up to a certain point, and then instead of continuing the farce, to make a turn to where it becomes quite serious. [He] wanted to break the concept that farces can never get real, even for a minute.' "

Dinner Party (play)

Dinner Party is the only play written by the Italian author and novelist, Pier Vittorio Tondelli, originally in 1985 for the Riccione-Ater Theatre Prize and published by Bompiani in 1994 after Tondelli's death. The play features a series of conversations between the cast of characters, who assemble for an apparent innocent evening dinner on July 11, 1982. This date is significant in that it was the day that Italy won the World Championship (FIFA World Cup) in Spain (Italy beat West Germany, 3-1). However, events take an odd turn, and this innocent dinner becomes a comical, unusual drama. As the soccer match takes place, another 'game' takes place on the stage between the various characters at the Oldofredi house, which Tondelli describes as "a cruel yet entertaining game of coups de théâtre, betrayals, revelations and ambiguity."
