Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic:
جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (Arabic: صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريتي Ṣaddām Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Maǧīd al-Tikrītī; 28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006) was the fifth President of Iraq, serving in this capacity from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organization Ba'ath Party – Iraq Region—which espoused Ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and socialism—Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup (later referred to as the 17 July Revolution) that brought the party to power in Iraq.
As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflict between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and other industries. The state-owned banks were put under his control, leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions. Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatuses of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were mostly filled with Sunni Arabs, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population.

ASH-SHARQAT, IRAQ — Sadiq al-Husseini, head of security for the Iraqi central government in the province of Diyala, recently announced that ISIS fighters killed a baby during a training exercise. Reports suggest that the militant Islamic group blew up the infant as part of a demonstration in improvised explosives. al-Husseini said that the child fell into ISIS’s hands after the group executed of his father. ISIS accused the child’s father of killing a number of ISIS fighters near ash-Sharqat, a city in the ISIS controlled portion of northern Iraq. So far, no information has emerged other than al-Husseini’s statements, where he denounced the Islamic State group for their “crimes against all segments of Iraqi society [that] have not stopped, and doesn’t exclude an elderly man or woman or...

Read your free e-book: http://copydl.space/mebk/50/en/B00DY2Z8PS/book Undoing Saddam tells the story of northern Iraq during the transition from U.s. occupation to local sovereignty. During 2004, U.s. and Iraqi government forces faced numerous challenges: insurrection, reconstruction, the creation of a new government, and how to portray the nation, its people, and the governments actions accurately. Wayne H. Bowen was a U.s. Army Reserve civil affairs officer in charge of higher education and antiquities in the provinces of Nineveh, Dohuk, and Erbil, where he played a critical role in promoting peace and stability. He managed reconstruction projects, served as a key intermediary between Iraqi educational leaders and U.s. forces, and assisted in the search for weapons of mass destruction.un...

The Iraqi Kurds have been fighting for independence for a long time and are part of a very modern struggle in the Middle East. "There are close to 30 million Kurds spread across northern Syria, northern Iraq, southern Turkey, and western Iran. They are the largest ethnic group without a homeland in the world. In the 1990s, the Kurds in northern Iraq, with the aid of the Coalition no-fly zone, began to develop their own autonomy, in what is now known as Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Regional Government is functionally now its own country, although it is still officially recognized as part of Iraq." PressTV's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/videosptv As militants from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group intensify their bloody campaign in Iraq, questions are raised about their supporters. Earlier this week, Militants from the al-Qaeda-linked ISIL took over the capital of Iraq's northern province of Nineveh. They continued their bloody rampage on Iraqi civilians in other regions but were met with heavy handed response from the Iraqi army. Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has asked the parliament to declare a state of emergency in the wake of the ISIL attacks. Takfiri groups, such as the ISIL, are reportedly coming to Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country. Maliki says Saudi Arabia and Qatar a...

Fierce fighting in northern Iraq continues daily between the Islamic State, IS rebel army, Iraq's Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and the Iraqi national army. For Our World, Yalda Hakim has travelled to the region to assess how the brutal treatment of Iraq's Christian and Yazidi minorities at the hands of IS, could be a terrifying precursor for what might lie ahead in Iraq if IS gains the upper hand in the battle for control of what is fast becoming a failed state.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress. The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid acc...

Kurdistan, a mountainous region made up of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Armenia and Syria, is home to one of the largest ethnic groups in West Asia: the Kurds. Now, most in the West know them for their small, oil-rich autonomous region in northern Iraq called Iraqi Kurdistan — one of the U.S.’ closer allies in the Middle East and a bulwark against the expansion of the so-called Islamic State. What does the success of Iraqi Kurdistan mean for Kurds in the surrounding region?
