Merry Christmas!
The lovely Lauren gave us this boozy Christmas gift, so I thought I’d give it a go last night. By the way, that maple syrup is phenomenal.
I kind of made a bit too much which made me drink it down fast. Then I looked like these guys:
This year we decided (like 3 days before Christmas) to exchange stockings (hung by the fire!). Looking forward to these later tonight!!!
The one decoration we bought this year, from The Finnish Place.
Last but certainly not least, is miss Isha flea pants. She’s been grooming a little too fervently lately, and I being the mama that I am (always picking at her when something seems slightly amiss) noticed some crazy things going on with her skin. Took her to the vet yesterday and blammo, fleas! I feel so bad because this is probably from the summer when we let her go out on the porch. We’re supposed to make her wear this cone, but it makes her nervous so she does the walk around the perimeter thing, and thus gets caught on EVERYTHING in her path. Hilarious for us, but kind of sad to watch too. I don’t like her wearing it unsupervised so she’s getting a free pass through Christmas.
Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!
Waffle benny, Silver cutlery, and Contest winner
Yesterday we went to Starving Artist for some eggs benedict over potato and chives waffles. We’ve been looking for new brunch places to try, and we’ll definitely be returning here. If you guys have any recommendations of places that are open on Mondays/Tuesdays that serve a great brunch, we’re all ears (besides Aunties & Uncles, Grapefruit Moon, Saving Grace, Mitzie’s, Yasis’s Place).
I also wanted to mention that we only have 2 pairs of Yuki Sakano cutlery left at the shop. Each piece is made by Yuki herself from solid Nickel silver, and then plated again one last time with pure silver. You can keep the beautiful light colour by polishing with a soft cloth, or as Yuki would intend, enjoy the tarnished silver as it naturally oxidizes.
$205 / set
I wanted to take this time to thank everyone for your encouraging words. We’ve got some pretty amazing artists we’re looking forward to working with this year, and I hope you’ll like our new products as much as we do!
As for the winner of the family of Oak birds here are the results:
The winner is…
Graham!
Congratulations, check your inbox!
White sprayed electric fireplace
We finally got our vintage fireplace sprayed white and lugged up to the apartment (I’m very proud of Juli). The burnt orange was pretty cool, but I’m happy that we got it sprayed a simple white.
Tim from Beresford Inc. did an amazing job keeping all the details intact, including this retro “Log” logo.
We picked up an extension flue at Home Depot and the little tin cap which finishes off the top, but also has an open vent for the fan.
The faux logs are pretty quirky, but they do set the mood. I’m still toying with painting the brass handles black, just for simplicity sake.
1 Year today
It was 1 year today that we opened our doors for the first time.
To mark the 1 year anniversary we had our friend Lindsey –Lindsey Bakes– to bake us a collection of Moomin cookies, she did an amazing job, and they are just as tasty as they look. We’ll be giving them out for free all day (while we have them) so please stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
They last a while and a customer has already mentioned she’s going to be hanging her cookie on her Christmas tree.
If you’re wondering where we got the beautiful wooden plate to display the cookies, it’s a new product line we have in the store by Rina Ono, a series of soft egg shaped serving pieces.
A year after opening, the symbolism of milk is just as strong. Our focus for our future is about nurturing. Providing a gallery space for new limited production design by emerging designers from Scandinavia and Japan, nurturing their creativity as they grow together with our store. We have some exciting new products that we can’t wait to share!
We started Kitka before we had the store, and it’s been the continued support from you guys that really pushed us to open the store. We can’t thank you enough, but we thought we’d give away a whole family of Kristian Vedel birds as a token of our appreciation.
To enter, just leave a comment! We’ll have a draw Tuesday to announce the winner.
NOTE: Sorry if your comments are not showing up – wait a few days and if it doesn’t appear, try again.
