Queen Elizabeth is running this show. The men in her court should be thinking about how to add to the glory of the Elizabethan Age and how to foil those pesky Spanish who got far too much influence in England when her older sister Mary was on the throne after their father Henry VIII was succeeded by their sickly half brother. Elizabeth thinks Michael Ingolby can do great things. Michael is mostly thinking about one of Elizabeth's ladies in waiting, Cynthia. Soon his mind is on survival when Elizabeth sends him on a voyage to Spain.

Fire Over England - Part 12
Fire Over England is a 1937 London Film Productions film drama, notable for providing the first pairing of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. It was directed by William K. Howard and written by Clemence Dane from the novel Fire Over England by A. E. W. Mason. Leigh's performance in the movie helped to convince David O. Selznick to cast her as Scarlett O'Hara in his production of Gone with the Wind. The film is a historical drama set during the reign of Elizabeth I (Flora Robson), focusing on the English defeat of the Spanish Armada, hence the title. In 1588, relations between Spain and England are at the breaking point. With the support of Queen Elizabeth I, English sea raiders such as Sir Francis Drake regularly capture Spanish merchantmen bringing gold from the New World. Elizabeth's chief advisors are the lord treasurer, Lord Burleigh (Morton Selten), and her longtime admirer, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (Leslie Banks). Burleigh's beautiful but featherbrained granddaughter Cynthia (Vivien Leigh) is one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting, and the aging queen is plagued with jealousy of the girl's attractiveness and vitality. In a sea battle between the Spanish, led by Don Miguel (Robert Rendel), and the English, led by his old friend Sir Richard Ingolby (Lyn Harding) the English are captured. Miguel arranges for Richard's son Michael (Laurence Olivier) to escape. Michael washes ashore on Miguel's estate, and his wounds are tended to by Miguel's daughter Elena (Tamara Desni), who quickly becomes enamoured of the handsome Englishman. As the months pass, Michael recovers and laments being apart from Cynthia, his sweetheart, but is nonetheless impressed by Elena's charms. Miguel brings Michael the sad news that Sir Richard, his father, has been executed as a heretic. The grieving Michael denounces his rescuers and flees to England in a small fishing boat. When he is granted an audience with the Queen he urges her to fight the Spanish menace by whatever means necessary, and swears undying loyalty to her. Elizabeth is flattered by the young man's fervent devotion and later has an opportunity to take advantage of his offer of service when Hillary Vane (James Mason), an Englishman spying for Spain, is killed before the names of his English co-conspirators can be uncovered. Michael, disguised as Vane, goes to the court of King Philip II of Spain (Raymond Massey) to get the letters that will set into motion a plan to assassinate Elizabeth. At the palace Michael meets Elena. Her father has been killed by the English and she is now married to Don Pedro (Robert Newton), the palace governor. Elena keeps Michael's identity a secret as long as she can, but finally must tell her husband out of loyalty to him. Philip sees through Michael's disguise and orders his arrest. Pedro helps him escape so that it will not be discovered that his wife aided a heretic. While Michael is returning home, the Spanish Armada sails against England and Elizabeth joins her army in Tilbury. Michael meets her there and reveals the names of the traitors. Elizabeth knights Michael and then confronts the six traitors and tell them to fulfill their plot and kill her. They are overwhelmed with shame and agree to go with Michael on a dangerous mission, using fire ships to make a night attack on the Armada, which is massed off the coast of England. The mission is successful as Michael and his men set the Armada aflame and then safely return. Elizabeth allows Michael and Cynthia to be wed, and after sadly ordering all mirrors to be removed from her rooms, greets her adoring subjects

Richard Addinsell: Warsaw Concerto
Richard Addinsell (1904-1977), born in London, was a prolific British composer of theater and film music, best known for his Warsaw Concerto, composed for the 1941 film 'Dangerous Moonlight' (also known under the later title 'Suicide Squadron').
Addinsell studied law at Oxford and, briefly music at the Royal College of Music in London. He wrote his first theater score in 1928 for the English novelist and playwright Clemence Dane (pseudonym of Winifred Ashton). Addinsell continued collaborating with Dane until her death in 1965.
After a break in 1929 for study in Berlin and Vienna, Addinsell returned to London and the theater. Eva La Gallienne, actress, producer, director, writer and teacher who was for many decades one of the grand figures of the American stage, asked him to score her production of Alice in Wonderland (another Dane project) in 1933. After that, Addinsell continued to write off and on for the stage, but he focused more on film music, scoring such classics as Goodbye Mr. Chips, A Tale of Two Cities, Blithe Spirit, Fire Over England, and Dark Journey, as well as a number of patriotic English documentaries during World War II.
Richard Addinsell's most enduring contribution to the repertory, the Warsaw Concerto, was embedded in his score for Dangerous Moonlight (released in the United States as Suicide Squadron). From 1942 Addinsell took occasional time out from his movie work to collaborate with Joyce Grenfell, who was considered in many ways the pioneer of British female comedy, on songs for such London West End revues as Tuppence Colored and Penny Plain, and later for Grenfell's one-woman shows.
Warsaw Concerto for Piano and Orchestra
Sometimes a piece of music appears at just the right time and in just the right context to become an indelible part of peoples' experience and memories. So it was with Richard Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto for piano and orchestra—a pastiche of the quintessential romantic piano concerto, composed for use in the 1941 British film Dangerous Moonlight, in which a Polish pianist finds himself caught up in the Battle of Britain. The original idea of the filmmakers (one of whom, Terence Young, would go on to direct three out of the first four James Bond films) was reportedly to use Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2, Op. 18 as the musical centerpiece of the film, but that idea was ultimately dropped in favor of commissioning a new, Rachmaninov-like piece from Addinsell and orchestrator Roy Douglas.
The music of the Warsaw Concerto is used in the film both as incidental music and as the subject of a performance in the film (a concert worked into the plot); it fills and surrounds each moment, its passion and nostalgia (it was modeled on Rachmaninov, after all) movingly at odds with the horrific reality of life in Britain in 1941. Not at all surprisingly, audiences embraced the Concerto, which soon appeared on record and in sheet music adaptations and arrangements.
The Warsaw Concerto is not a full concerto in the usual sense of the word; it is in one movement only. The opening is certainly dramatic enough; the piano enters with a gusto matched perhaps only by the Grieg Piano Concerto's opening plunge; tympani alone supports this first gasp.
The second theme, a melody once famous and instantly recognized around the globe, is pure Rachmaninov (its cadence-moment is borrowed straight from the Piano Concerto No.2), but one should not think any less of Addinsell's effort for its unabashed stylistic borrowings. The effort is supremely skillful, the music graceful, and not overly self-indulgent.
It is worth noting that many similar pastiches that appeared in films and on discs over the course of the next two decades have all been basically forgotten, leaving Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto to mark the genre. It helps to remember how desperately the suffering Britons needed a warmth like Rachmaninov's, even as diffused through another composer, in 1941.
