Tripoli is the capital and largest city of Libya, with a population of about 1.1 million people in 2022. It is located in the northwest of Libya on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea and forming a bay. The city of Tripoli houses the port of Tripoli and the country's largest commercial and manufacturing center. It is also the site of the University of Tripoli. The vast Bab al-Azizia barracks, which includes the former family estate of Muammar Gaddafi, is also located in the city. Colonel Gaddafi largely ruled the country from his residence in this barracks.

The U. S. Marine Corps hymn starts with"From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli", and this film's story purports to be the reason why, and is give or take a few incidents in this movie: It is 1805 and the Tripoli pirates have challenged America's right to freedom of the seas---all of them, anywhere---so United Stares warships were sent to that port to bottle up their fleet and set the riff-raff right concerning who could sail where.
Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who gave it the Libyco-Berber name ‘Oyat” before passing into the hands of the Greek rulers of Cyrenaica. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archeological significance in Tripoli.
In the Arab World, Tripoli is also known as Tripoli-of-the-West, to distinguish it from Tripoli, Lebanon, known in Arabic as Ṭarābulus al-Sham, meaning 'Levantine Tripoli'. It is affectionately called "Arusat al-Bahr; meaning ‘’The Mermaid of the Mediterranean" or 'bride of the sea', describing its turquoise waters and its whitewashed buildings.
Tripoli is one of the main hubs of Libya's economy along with Misrata. It is the leading center of banking, finance and communication in the country and is one of the leading commercial and manufacturing cities in Libya. Many of the country's largest corporations locate their headquarters and home offices in Tripoli as well as the majority of international companies.
Major manufactured goods include processed food, textiles, construction materials, clothing and tobacco products. Since the lifting of sanctions against Libya in 1999 and again in 2003, Tripoli has seen a rise in foreign investment as well as an increase in tourism. Increased traffic has also been recorded in the city's port as well as Libya's main international airport, Tripoli International.
The city's old town, the Medina, is still unspoiled by mass-tourism, though it was increasingly exposed to more and more visitors from abroad, following the lifting of the UN embargo in 2003. However, the walled Medina retains much of its serene old-world ambiance. Three gates provided access to the old town: Bab Zanata in the west, Bab Hawara in the southeast and Bab Al-Bahr in the north wall. The city walls are still standing and can be climbed for good views of the city. The bazaar is also known for its traditional ware; fine jewelry and clothes can be found in the local markets.
Tourism in Libya is an industry heavily hit by the Libyan Civil War. Before the war tourism was developing, with 149,000 tourists visiting Libya in 2004, rising to 180,000 in 2007. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes.
Tourism in Libya is not very developed due to the continuous political changes that have taken place in the country, the military conflicts, the lack of security, the theological reasons linked to traditionalist neo-fundamentalism, the difficulty in obtaining tourist visas, the lack of infrastructures, protection of archaeological areas, lack of competent human resources, insufficient budget and no action plans.
The United Nations international embargo, which has been recently lifted, has been a major deterrent for tourists. It has resulted in delays in tourism development and made it difficult for tourists, who have instead had to travel through an arduous, physically exhausting way into and out of the country through the Tunisia-Libya land border. International tourism into Libya has suffered due to the instability caused by the Libyan Civil War.
Libyan cuisine is generally simple, and is very similar to Sahara cuisine with several Ottoman/Turkish and Italian influences. In many undeveloped areas and small towns, restaurants may be nonexistent, and food stores may be the only source to obtain food products. Some common Libyan foods include couscous, bazeen, which is a type of unsweetened cake, and shurba, which is soup. Libyan restaurants may serve international cuisine, or may serve simpler fare such as lamb, chicken, vegetable stew, potatoes and macaroni. Alcohol consumption is illegal in the entire country.
There are four main ingredients of traditional Libyan food: olives, palm dates, grains and milk. Grains are roasted, ground, sieved and used for making bread, cakes, soups and bazeen. Dates are harvested, dried and can be eaten as they are, made into syrup or slightly fried and eaten with bsisa and milk.
A lot of economic and infrastructural development has been taking place in Tripoli in recovery from civil war, and this has seen Tripoli being placed amongst fastest developing economies Africa. Generally, Tripoli is an exciting city and trust me you'll want to find yourself there, sooner or later.

The U. S. (History begins to suffer a bit along about this point.) A U. S. Marine unit, headed by Lieutenant O'Bannon, was sent to attack them from the rear. He organized his unit around Hamet, Pasha of Tripoli, in exile after being overthrown by his brother. In Hamet's court was Sheila D'Arneau, a diploma's daughter, who disguises herself as a dancing girl, and joins the group of eight U. S. Tripoli, Lebanon - Is it safe?
Join me as I explore Tripoli, Lebanon! Everyone here loves Mohamed Salah. 😆
I traveled alone in Lebanon, but I met friendly locals everywhere! I always travel in a Liverpool shirt, and people constantly stop me in Lebanon to chat about football and Liverpool FC. In Arabic-speaking countries, locals always want to talk about Mo Salah, their favorite player.
Tripoli is considered a high-risk area to visit in the Middle East. However, I felt completely safe while exploring alone in the city. I visited several other places in Lebanon and felt safe everywhere.
This video was recorded just before the pandemic started. I am currently editing and sharing footage from my previous travels. However, starting next month, I will begin to travel again, capture videos, and create current vid...

Warlords of Tripoli (Full Length Documentary)
Click here to subscribe to VICE News for more: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
The war in Syria is dragging neighbouring Lebanon to the edge of the abyss, and nowhere is the growing chaos more stark than in the second city of Tripoli. Sunni militants aligned with the Syrian rebels frequently clash with fighters from the city's encircled Alawite minority, who support the Assad regime, in bitter street fighting the country's weak government is powerless to stop. With the rule of law no longer in effect in Tripoli, warlords like Sunni commander Ziad Allouki are now the city's real rulers, so VICE hung out with him and his fighters for a week to discover why they're fighting, and whether the country really is on the brink of civil war.

→ BONUS SCENES ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/20Camels
Tripoli is liberal -- they follow their own rules. As the second most populated city in Lebanon, Tripoli, or Trablus (طرابلس), has a unique culture of its own that didn't remind me of anything I had seen in Lebanon up until that point. At first glance, it came across as chaotic and scary, but once we got used to it we relaxed and found the people kind and welcoming, and the city to be an interesting mix of old and new, traditional and revolutionary. In this video, join us for the more traditional side of Tripoli: The Citadel, the Souks, the Artisans, the Food and a Hammam.

Tripoli: "We are not extremists" - BBC News
Tripoli in northern Lebanon is known to have problems with extremism, but many in the city feel they’re being unfairly accused of terrorism. Following years of war and fighting between two neighbouring communities, and the increased presence of extremist groups, the government has cracked down hard. Thousands of homes in Lebanon's Tripoli at risk of collapse
Thousands of people in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli are living in danger because their homes are at risk of collapse.
At least 10,000 housing units are at risk of collapse. The city has suffered from decades of government neglect and instability.
But hundreds of families are living in unstable structures because they are too poor to go elsewhere.

I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and YouTuber who's been to 53 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017. So far, my trips have taken me to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This trip marked the start of my efforts to make a YouTube full-time job.
After that European trip I went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan (seeing me cover a lot of Far East and Southeast Asia in particular).
I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey,
Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022, along with a first stop in the Caribbean.
I've travelled to North America just once as a YouTuber, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was as a child on family holidays.
In 2022, I took my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania, before making my way to the Middle East, stopping in Dubai on my way to Lebanon.

Tripoli in northern Lebanon is known to have problems with extremism, but many in the city feel they’re being unfairly accused of terrorism. Following years of war and fighting between two neighbouring communities, and the increased presence of extremist groups, the government has cracked down hard.

Al Jazeera's @Zeina Khodr has more from Tripoli, Lebanon.
