This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

Luego del prólogo que alude a la tradición de los cuentos infantiles y su enseñanza ejemplificadora (“un árbol bueno no puede dar malos frutos, ni un árbol malo producir buenos frutos”), le sigue la presentación del protagonista de la historia: Harry Powell, que tras su apariencia de predicador se esconde un cruento asesino de mujeres (“Desconfiad de los falsos profetas que se cubren con pieles de cordero, pero que en su interior son lobos furiosos” versa la voz de Lilian Gish en el prólogo). En esta escena Harry confiesa sus crímenes y pecados ante Dios con total irreverencia y sin presentar arrepentimiento alguno deja expresar toda su misoginia: “Pero hay algo que tu odias Señor. Los seres perfumados, seres perezosos, seres con cabellos ondulados”. Luego de estas palabras llegamos a la escena en el salón de baile, donde Harry, perturbado por el strip-tease que se le presenta delante de sus ojos, deja expresar toda su ira y odio contenido en el puño cerrado, y la navaja adquiere un destacado papel como sustituto del falo en erección que corta la tela y penetra proyectivamente en el cuerpo de la mujer del escenario. Concluido este momento, la expresión de placer y regodeo con la mirada desplegada hacia el cielo de Harry cierra la metáfora del orgasmo(1).
(1) En este sentido, podría abrirse también aquí una nueva línea de análisis con relación a todas las escenas de muerte entre dos personajes (generalmente hombre y mujer) que pueden ser leídas en esa misma clave: sin duda alguna, el coito es por excelencia el acto en el que se sintetiza la unión inevitable de la vida y la muerte.

Hija del bailarín Eduardo Cansino, natural de Castilleja de la Cuesta (Sevilla, España), y de Volga Haworth, de origen irlandés. Rita empezó su carrera como bailarina junto a su padre, y con su nombre real, a la temprana edad de 13 años.
Llegó a Hollywood en 1933, y desde 1935 actuó como actriz en papeles secundarios, realizando muchas películas de serie B en las que sobre todo destacó por sus dotes para la danza, o por su elegante aspecto. De esta etapa destaca la película Charlie Chan en Egipto (1937), de Louis King, película perteneciente a la saga dedicada al célebre detective oriental, en la que trabajó junto a Warner Oland, que encarnaba a Chan.
Fue su marido, por aquel entonces Edward Judson, quien la lanzó al estrellato, convirtiéndola en su mejor inversión personal. Judson le consiguió un contrato con Columbia Pictures, productora que necesitaba de estrellas importantes y a quien la actriz acabaría colocando entre las primeras compañías cinematográficas, reportándole a la empresa millonarios ingresos sólo con su presencia. Rita Hayworth es la Columbia, dijo Frank Sinatra. Para entonces, Harry Cohn, magnate de la productora, se enamoró de ella. La presión y las disputas por este motivo entre la actriz y el productor, darían mucho qué hablar entre los profesionales de la industria, y él estuvo toda la vida obsesionado con ella, que no respondió nunca a sus requerimientos amorosos.
Su primer papel importante fue como actriz secundaria en la película: Sólo los ángeles tienen alas (1939), de Howard Hawks, lo que hizo que la crítica cinematográfica se empezara a fijar en ella. Ella poseía una personalidad tímida y bondadosa, que contrastaba con su fuerza y enorme impacto en la pantalla; en este film, compartió cartel con Cary Grant, Jean Arthur y Thomas Mitchell. Luego rodó una comedia junto a Brian Aherne: Una dama en cuestión (1940), de Charles Vidor.
Rita ingresó triunfante en la Twenty Century Fox (compañía que años atrás la había rechazado), reclamada por el director Rouben Mamoulian, para interpretar a Doña Sol en la superproducción basada en la novela de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, Sangre y arena (1941), junto a Tyrone Power y Linda Darnell. Esta película significó su lanzamiento como sex symbol indiscutible durante toda una década. Su carrera la convirtió en una de las grandes estrellas de su época y en la actriz mejor pagada del cine.
Luego intervino en dos comedias musicales de amplio eco popular, junto a Fred Astaire: Desde aquel beso (1941), de Sidney Lamfield, y Bailando nace el amor (1942), de William A. Seiter. Estos éxitos y su talento la llevaron a protagonizar un musical ya clásico, Las modelos (1944), de Charles Vidor, junto a Gene Kelly y Phil Silvers, filme innovador en su día, al trasladar los números de baile de salón a ambientaciones callejeras. En esa época rodó The Strawberry Blonde (1941), de Raoul Walsh, junto a James Cagney y Olivia de Havilland; Mi chica favorita (1942), de Irving Cummings una cinta de corte biográfico junto a Victor Mature y Carole Landis; y Esta noche y todas las noches (1945), de Victor Saville, un musical que fluctúa entre la comedia y el drama de tono menor, junto a Lee Bowman y Janet Blair.
No obstante, su fama como mito erótico se consolidó con Gilda (1946), de Charles Vidor, una de las grandes películas del cine negro, en la que tan sólo con un brevísimo, pero sugerente strip-tease, y la recepción de una bofetada consiguió récords de taquilla en todo el mundo. Dicha bofetada se convertiría en la más famosa de la historia del cine estadounidense, y fue propinada por su pareja en el film, Glenn Ford, en respuesta a la que Hayworth le había dado momentos antes.
La película fue un escándalo, y en países como España fue considerada "gravemente peligrosa" por la Iglesia Católica, debido a su strip-tease insinuante, en la famosa escena donde se quita un guante. Esta película la hizo inmensamente famosa, hasta el punto de que se colocó su imagen en la bomba atómica de pruebas arrojada por Estados Unidos sobre las Islas Bikini. Dado el carácter pacifista de la actriz, este hecho la indignó profundamente. También ocasionó una histérica expedición a la Cordillera de los Andes, a fin de enterrar allí una copia de la película, para que se conservase en caso de un desastre nuclear.
Este momento de fama internacional también coincide con una de sus crisis en lo personal: su matrimonio con Ali Khan entró en crisis, y ella declaró a la prensa una frase que se haría célebre: «Todos los hombres que conozco se acuestan con Gilda, pero se levantan conmigo».
La suerte profesional parece ir en racha, y en 1948 rueda, junto a su nuevo marido, el director Orson Welles, un filme que fue en su día maldito, pero que resultó de enorme trascendencia: La dama de Shangai.
La película no tuvo mucho éxito comercial porque Welles le cortó el pelo, la tiñó de rub
