Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, died after being in critical condition while battling a lung infection. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, July 18, 1918. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. Mandela was arrested in 1962 sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. Nelson Mandela was released on February 11, 1990. He later became the first black President of South Africa in1994 in the country's first free elections. Children: Zindziswa Mandela, Makaziwe Mandela, Makgatho Mandela, Zenani Mandela, Madiba Thembekile Mandela.
