When you're sick, you go to the doctor and the doctor treats your disease. They've been trained to do that pretty well. But what do you do when you're healthy? Well, you probably just go about your day. You've got a busy life, we all do. And you can't afford to be sick.
So what if I told you there are people out there whose job it is to make sure you stay healthy? And what if I told you these are people you've probably never met? Well, these folks are in a field called public health. And their mission is to promote health and prevent disease. Doctors, on the other hand, are on a mission to treat disease.
So let's say this person is diagnosed with diabetes. Now it's the doctor's job to treat her patient. She'll prescribe medications and insulin to help him meet his target blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, he'll have to keep going back for prescriptions for the rest of his life because there is no cure. To make matters worse, he will have to deal with issues like long-term health complications, health insurance concerns, and even social discrimination. And don't forget his medical bill, almost fourteen thousand dollars a year. His priorities in life are now secondary to his disease. Sure, modern medicine has come a long way. But is this the best way to address disease?
Well, let's take a step back and focus on preventing disease. According to public health researchers, simple things like a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes. So public health folks put their health promotion and disease prevention mission to work. They lower the prices of healthier foods and beverages in school cafeterias to promote a healthy diet. And they build community sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes to promote exercise. And at a fraction of the cost of disease treatment, public health makes it really easy for people to stay healthy in the first place. No diabetes means no long-term health complications, no health insurance concerns, and no social discrimination. Just health promotion and disease prevention.
And the crazy thing is, it works. Really well. Because people you've never met, people you've never even talked to, devote their time to make sure you stay healthy.

I was a math major in college. Well, not for long. During my first day of multivariable calculus, the professor said something about double integrals, and I was done. Nope. Not for me. I'm out.
The only course available during the same time slot was called introduction to public health and the professor wrote on the overhead: college will make you sick. What does that mean?
He said your health is determined by things like when you're born, where you grow up, how you work, what you buy, who you spend time with--it's like everything in life can affect your very own well-being.
Public health is about making sure these things beyond yourself, these social determinants, keep you healthy. I was hooked.
I grew interested in sexual health because I was a teenage boy. I thought about sex all the time. I had very little personal experience and soon learned that the limited knowledge I had was entirely wrong.
You see, I learned about sex from watching hours and hours of movies and TV shows. But they showed me a type of sex that doesn't exist in real life. Based on their rules, condoms are never used, sexually transmitted infections don't exist, and the best sex is actually quite risky. No talking, no negotiations, no running to the bathroom. Media sex was perfect. And entirely unobtainable.
The worst part is that half of the nineteen million new sexually transmitted infections each year occur among the largest consumers of media: young Americans ages fifteen to twenty-four years old. The cost burden of these infections is estimated to be over fifteen billion dollars per year. That's billion. With a B.
But we can't just blame mainstream media. Where are the public health media campaigns that counter mainstream media's perfect sex?
They're out there. And they're really boring.
Why? Because mainstream media uses the power of the story. Public health just has information. And information is boring.
Luckily, I've come a long way since my introduction to public health. I'm on a mission to develop a transmedia narrative to promote healthy sex. Transmedia uses multiple media platforms to tell a story. Because stories teach and engage, stories aren't boring, stories can change ideals and prejudices, they can make sex fun and healthy. And that's way more fun than multivariable calculus.

A little pill for birth control and women's rights improved.
So no more need for diaphragms, or good old fashioned abstinence,
A woman's right became her right to choose.
Well pills, patch, rings, oh they're nice things to give the perfect dose
Of estrogen and progestin for short term goals at most.
Rings last a month, and a patch a week, one pill a day,
The best technique is, like your iPhone, better keep it close.
Depo's great for real estate if your purse won't fit a pack.
It lasts a season, within reason, but a shot means you're coming back.
It's safe and easy in that respect, but once it's in you those side effects
May last a while, you just can't give up that.
Nexplanon's an implant that goes nicely in your arm.
It doesn't hurt, it doesn't itch, there isn't any harm.
Releasing hormones over time, means you come back three years down the line,
You can live your life, while it works like a charm.
But if three year's too short a time for birth control, you say,
I've got something that's small enough to keep pregnancy at bay:
Two IUDs, one lasts for five, the other ten years, it survives
Inside the uterus, where it's built to stay.
I've been across this country teaching everybody who
Wants to know about birth control, the pros, the cons, the truth.
The question's always: "What's the best? Oh, which one's better than the rest?"
I always say: "The best one is the one that works for you."

Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals" (1920, C.E.A. Winslow). It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). The dimensions of health can encompass "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", as defined by the United Nations' World Health Organization. Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy and occupational health are other important subfields.
The focus of public health intervention is to improve health and quality of life through the prevention and treatment of disease and other physical and mental health conditions, through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Promotion of hand washing and breastfeeding, delivery of vaccinations, and distribution of condoms to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases are examples of common public health measures.

Klausner, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Public Health, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Fielding School of Public Health Recorded February 9, 2015 Abstract: Infectious diseases are the leading causes of death and disability world wide. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases are readily identifiable through laboratory tests however strategies to implement testing and realize the benefits of treatment are often lacking. Prof Jeffrey Klausner was a deputy health officer in San Francisco, 1998-2011 and played a key role in increasing access to HIV testing. From 2009-2011 he was Chief of the HIV and TB Branch for the CDC PEPFAR program in South Africa where he helped scale-up testing and treatment services. Currently as Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the UCLA schools of medicine and public health he conducts research on infectious disease prevention, detection and treatment in Peru, Haiti, Botswana, South Africa and Los Angeles. Prof. Klausner will discuss how infectious diseases can be controlled at scale to maximize the benefits of early detection and treatment at the population level. -

Renaming Ceremony: UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs
On Friday, March 18, 2011, the UCLA School of Public Affairs was officially renamed the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin School of Public Affairs during a ceremony hosted by Dean Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. and featuring remarks by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block, and UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh. Nearly 400 guests from across the Los Angeles community were in attendance in the Murphy Sculpture Garden to mark this historic occasion. The renaming in honor of the Luskins reflects their recent $100 million gift to UCLA, half of which is directed to support fellowships, teaching and research, and programs in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The gift is the second largest philanthropic donation to UCLA in its history. -

When you're sick, you go to the doctor and the doctor treats your disease. They've been trained to do that pretty well. But what do you do when you're healthy? Well, you probably just go about your day. You've got a busy life, we all do. And you can't afford to be sick.
So what if I told you there are people out there whose job it is to make sure you stay healthy? And what if I told you these are people you've probably never met? Well, these folks are in a field called public health. And their mission is to promote health and prevent disease. Doctors, on the other hand, are on a mission to treat disease.
So let's say this person is diagnosed with diabetes. Now it's the doctor's job to treat her patient. She'll prescribe medications and insulin to help him meet his target blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, he'll have to keep going back for prescriptions for the rest of his life because there is no cure. To make matters worse, he will have to deal with issues like long-term health complications, health insurance concerns, and even social discrimination. And don't forget his medical bill, almost fourteen thousand dollars a year. His priorities in life are now secondary to his disease. Sure, modern medicine has come a long way. But is this the best way to address disease?
Well, let's take a step back and focus on preventing disease. According to public health researchers, simple things like a healthy diet and regular exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes. So public health folks put their health promotion and disease prevention mission to work. They lower the prices of healthier foods and beverages in school cafeterias to promote a healthy diet. And they build community sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes to promote exercise. And at a fraction of the cost of disease treatment, public health makes it really easy for people to stay healthy in the first place. No diabetes means no long-term health complications, no health insurance concerns, and no social discrimination. Just health promotion and disease prevention.
And the crazy thing is, it works. Really well. Because people you've never met, people you've never even talked to, devote their time to make sure you stay healthy.

I was a math major in college. Well, not for long. During my first day of multivariable calculus, the professor said something about double integrals, and I was done. Nope. Not for me. I'm out.
The only course available during the same time slot was called introduction to public health and the professor wrote on the overhead: college will make you sick. What does that mean?
He said your health is determined by things like when you're born, where you grow up, how you work, what you buy, who you spend time with--it's like everything in life can affect your very own well-being.
Public health is about making sure these things beyond yourself, these social determinants, keep you healthy. I was hooked.
I grew interested in sexual health because I was a teenage boy. I thought about sex all the time. I had very little personal experience and soon learned that the limited knowledge I had was entirely wrong.
You see, I learned about sex from watching hours and hours of movies and TV shows. But they showed me a type of sex that doesn't exist in real life. Based on their rules, condoms are never used, sexually transmitted infections don't exist, and the best sex is actually quite risky. No talking, no negotiations, no running to the bathroom. Media sex was perfect. And entirely unobtainable.
The worst part is that half of the nineteen million new sexually transmitted infections each year occur among the largest consumers of media: young Americans ages fifteen to twenty-four years old. The cost burden of these infections is estimated to be over fifteen billion dollars per year. That's billion. With a B.
But we can't just blame mainstream media. Where are the public health media campaigns that counter mainstream media's perfect sex?
They're out there. And they're really boring.
Why? Because mainstream media uses the power of the story. Public health just has information. And information is boring.
Luckily, I've come a long way since my introduction to public health. I'm on a mission to develop a transmedia narrative to promote healthy sex. Transmedia uses multiple media platforms to tell a story. Because stories teach and engage, stories aren't boring, stories can change ideals and prejudices, they can make sex fun and healthy. And that's way more fun than multivariable calculus.

On Friday, March 18, 2011, the UCLA School of Public Affairs was officially renamed the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin School of Public Affairs during a ceremony hosted by Dean Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. and featuring remarks by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block, and UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh. Nearly 400 guests from across the Los Angeles community were in attendance in the Murphy Sculpture Garden to mark this historic occasion. The renaming in honor of the Luskins reflects their recent $100 million gift to UCLA, half of which is directed to support fellowships, teaching and research, and programs in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The gift is the second largest philanthropic donation to UCLA in its history.

She is channeling the current momentum to champion a new vision of the Los Angeles River in partnership with community groups, foundations, government entities, as well as, individual and corporate donors. Between 2008 and 2013, Maria Luisa Camacho served as Vice President at Consensus Inc., where she specialized in managing political and key stakeholder communications strategies for high-profile real estate development projects, transportation projects and state-wide projects. In November 2011, Maria was appointed by Governor Brown to preside on the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. Maria will serve a four-year term. Maria earned her J.D. at Loyola Law School, where she became a certified mediator at the Loyola Law School Center for Conflict Resolution. She has a B.A. from Stanford University in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, with a Minor in Urban Studies.

Jonathan E. Fielding, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., M.A. has contributed to the fields of public health and prevention for 45 years and has served in a variety of leadership positions. He is a Distinguished Professor of Public Health and Pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he has been a tenured faculty member since 1979.
Dr. Fielding led the public health activities for Los Angeles County as Director of Public Health and Health Officer for 16 years until 2014. In this role, Dr. Fielding was responsible for all public health functions including surveillance and control of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health protection (including against bioterrorism) for the County’s 9.8 million residents. He directed a staff of nearly 4,000 with an annual budget exceeding $850 million. Dr. Fielding also served as Commissioner of the First 5 L.A. Commission, which provides over $100 million in funding annually for programs to improve the health and development of children 0-5 years.
The public health school was renamed the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health in 2012 in recognition of their generosity and Dr. Fielding’s many contributions to improving the public’s health.
In addition to his UCLA work he has been a founding member and long time chair of the U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force, and was a founding member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Both Task Forces assess the evidence for and make national recommendations on the effectiveness of health relevant policies, programs and practices. Dr. Fielding is the long serving Editor of the Annual Review of Public Health and the immediate past Board Chair of the American Legacy Foundation. He is a Presidential appointee and founding member of the national Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health, and also consults to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Formerly he chaired the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s expert advisory group on the national 2020 Healthy People Project. Dr. Fielding previously served as Commissioner of Public Health for Massachusetts and is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Fielding has authored more than 300 original articles, commentaries and editorials on public health and prevention issues. His current research interests include the effectiveness of governmental and private sector policies and programs to improve health and cost-effectiveness. His research also covers how to better invest the excessive resources in our health care system to yield lasting improvements in health and well-being.
He received his medical, public health and history of science degrees from Harvard University and an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of Business.
Dr. Fielding has also had success as an entrepreneur and businessman, having created health promotion and quality assurance businesses respectively acquired by Johnson & Johnson and Baxter. He served as a Johnson & Johnson Vice President for 7 years.

“This was an important exercise and allowed our health care team the opportunity to practice and receive valuable feedback from the Department of Public Health,” said Dr. Zachary Rubin, associate clinical professor of infectious diseases and medical director of clinical epidemiology and infection prevention at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. “Preparing for patients stricken with Ebola has involved a significant amount of time and thought. We are trained and believe we are prepared to care for such patients, and that includes doing everything we can to ensure the health and safety of all of our patients, faculty and staff, and the community.”

Dr. Dick Jackson of the UCLA School of Public Health explores how trees are an important part of building healthy communities. The talk was given as a part of the Invest from the Ground Up! campaign by the California Urban Forest Council. Dr. Jackson gave this speech at the East Hollywood Business Improvement Forum held at the Hollywood Hotel in June of 2013. Million Trees LA partnered with the California Urban Forest Council, the Los Angeles Beautification Team, and the East Hollywood Business Improvement District to put on the event for local businesses, including the major hospitals in the neighborhood.

He teaches courses on methods of policy analysis and on drug abuse and crime control. Mr. Kleiman edits the Journal of Drug Policy Analysis and serves on the Committee on Law and Justice of the National Research Council. He is the author of When Brute Force Fails: How to Have Less Crime and Less Punishment and co-author (with Angela Hawken and Jonathan Caulkins) of Drugs and Drug Policy and (with Hawken, Caulkins, and Beau Kilmer) of Marijuana Legalization. Previous books include Against Excess: Drug Policy for Results and Marijuana: Costs of Abuse, Costs of Control. In addition to his academic work, Mr. Kleiman provides advice on crime control and drug policy to governments here and abroad. Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) is a commonly used technique for assessing whether the additional costs associated with a wide variety of interventions, including health care technologies, are reasonable to achieve improvement in outcomes. Because market mechanisms often don’t work properly in health care settings to separate cost-effective from cost-ineffective technologies, CEA is now widely used to improve the allocation of increasingly scarce resources. This module provides an introduction to CEA, including why health care markets rely on CEA rather than market competition, and how CEA differs from other methods of economic evaluation (such as cost-benefit analysis). Participants will also learn about the structure of generic CEA models that are frequently used in medical settings, and a general framework for conducting CEA, including how to identify appropriate costs for inclusion in such analyses.

During the Reagan governorship, he left because of philosophical differences, joining the School of Public Health at UCLA. There he sequentially assumed chairmanship of various departments in public health.

A pitbull was raped and murdered in Thuston County, Washington last week. The animal was found hanging from a tree, with its feet just out of reach of the ground, on Department of Natural Resources land. A mountain biker came across the macabre scene while cycling through the property.
