Big Daddy talks about the Death of King Kong Kirk during a bout.
In 1985 ITV cancelled the British wrestling programmes in favour of showing the American World Wrestling Federation (WWF) programmes. However Big Daddy made live appearances and performed in wrestling bouts around the country. In 1987, during a wrestling bout with Big Daddy Mal "King Kong" Kirk turned blue during a Belly Splash and died in hospital from heart problems. Though Big Daddy was cleared at a coroner's inquest he retired from wrestling. Shirley Crabtree aka Big Daddy died of a stroke on December 2nd 1997. He was aged 67 years.

Do The Crusher! Big Daddy Vs Giant Haystacks (music fromThe Novas)
Do The Crusher! Big Daddy Vs Giant Haystacks (music fromThe Novas)
This is the edited highlights of the Final Showdown that Grapple Fans throughout Britain had waited for: "Mum's and Dad's Favourite" Big Daddy, alias Shirley (Yes, that was his real name) Crabtree, versus Giant Haystacks (Martin Ruane, in reality a quiet and devoutly catholic man, who wouldn't wrestle on Sundays). Crabtree, a former Rugby League player followed his Father (also called Shirley) into wrestling after his temper saw him never making the first team at Bradford Northern. He was originally a Heel, or 'baddie', who at one time formed a tag team with the six-foot-eleven-inches tall, Haystacks , but a bit like Arnie in the Terminator films, he was so popular he 'crossed the ring' and became a goody. He was famous for his huge midriff and his signature way of finishing-off opponents with his 'Belly Splash". He retired from wrestling after one of his opponents Mal 'King Kong' Kirk died after their bout in Great Yarmouth in 1987. The Coroner found Kirk had a serious heart condition and cleared Crabtree of any responsibility, but Big Daddy never went back to the ring. Shirley Crabtree died of a stroke in 1997, aged 67. Giant Haystacks went on to have a brief career in World Championship Wrestling, in which he 'feuded' with Hulk Hogan. Sadly, he was diagnosed with cancer shortly after his American debut in 1996 and died in 1998 at the age of 52. The Crusher, by The Novas, released in 1965, was a thinly disguised homage to a US wrestler, Reggie 'The Crusher' Lisowski ...
