Waste Management - Garbage Disposal
Waste Management - Garbage Disposal
Unwanted and discarded, garbage stands as a smelly testament of mankind's wastefulness. Join us as we rummage through the history of rubbish and discover the ever-changing composition of refuse. We'll also examine the current high and low-tech means of taking out the trash, including recycling, and learn how to use less stuff! Waste management is the "generation, prevention, characterization, monitoring, treatment, handling, reuse and residual disposition of solid wastes". There are various types of solid waste including municipal (residential, institutional, commercial), agricultural, and special (health care, household hazardous wastes, sewage sludge). The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and the process is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. There is a wide array of issues relating to waste management and those areas include: Generation of waste Waste minimization Recycling and reuse Storage, collection, transport, and transfer Treatment Landfill disposal Environmental considerations Financial and marketing aspects Policy and regulations Education and training Planning and implementation. Waste management practices are not uniform among: countries (developed and developing nations); regions (urban and rural area), and sectors (residential and industrial). Throughout most of history, the amount of waste generated by humans was insignificant due to low population density and low societal levels of the exploitation of natural resources. Common waste produced during pre-modern times was mainly ashes and human biodegradable waste, and these were released back into the ground locally, with minimum environmental impact. Tools made out of wood or metal were generally reused or passed down through the generations. However, some civilizations do seem to have been more profligate in their waste output than others. In particular, the Maya of Central America had a fixed monthly ritual, in which the people of the village would gather together and burn their rubbish in large dumps. Following the onset of industrialisation and the sustained urban growth of large population centres in England, the buildup of waste in the cities caused a rapid deterioration in levels of sanitation and the general quality of urban life. The streets became choked with filth due to the lack of waste clearance regulations. Calls for the establishment of a municipal authority with waste removal powers were mooted as early as 1751 by Corbyn Morris in London, who proposed that "...as the preservation of the health of the people is of great importance, it is proposed that the cleaning of this city, should be put under one uniform public management, and all the filth be...conveyed by the Thames to proper distance in the country". However, it was not until the mid-19th century, spurred by increasingly devastating cholera outbreaks and the emergence of a public health debate that the first legislation on the issue emerged. Highly influential in this new focus was the report The Sanitary Condition of the Labouring Population in 1842 of the social reformer, Edwin Chadwick, in which he argued for the importance of adequate waste removal and management facilities to improve the health and wellbeing of the city's population. In the UK, the Nuisance Removal and Disease Prevention Act of 1846 began what was to be a steadily evolving process of the provision of regulated waste management in London. The Metropolitan Board of Works was the first city-wide authority that centralized sanitation regulation for the rapidly expanding city and the Public Health Act 1875 made it compulsory for every household to deposit their weekly waste in "moveable receptacles: for disposal—the first concept for a dust-bin. The dramatic increase in waste for disposal led to the creation of the first incineration plants, or, as they were then called, "destructors". In 1874, the first incinerator was built in Nottingham by Manlove, Alliott & Co. Ltd. to the design of Albert Fryer. However, these were met with opposition on account of the large amounts of ash they produced and which wafted over the neighbouring areas. Similar municipal systems of waste disposal sprung up at the turn of the 20th century in other large cities of Europe and North America. In 1895, New York City became the first U.S. city with public-sector garbage management. Early garbage removal trucks were simply open bodied dump trucks pulled by a team of horses. They became motorized in the early part of the 20th century and the first close body trucks to eliminate odours with a dumping lever mechanism were introduced in the 1920s in Britain. These were soon equipped with 'hopper mechanisms' where the scooper was loaded at floor level and then hoisted mechanically to deposit the waste in the truck. The Garwood Load Packer was the first truck in 1938, to incorporate a hydraulic compactor.- published: 30 Mar 2014

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) - All Nuclear Waste Locations (Waste Management Trophy/Achievement Guide)
There are a total of 30 Nuclear Waste Collectibles in GTA V. Finding all of them will earn you the "Waste Management" trophy / achievement. To collect them you need to buy the Sonar Collections Dock while playing as Michael. This property can be bought after completing the "The Merryweather Heist" story mission. The dock costs $250,000. You need to pick up the waste with the submarine. The submarine always spawns at the dock. Pretty much all of the nuclear waste is at the bottom of the ocean. Buying the docks will also give you a new app called "Trackify". The app starts automatically when entering the submarine and provides a radar that points to the next collectible. The order in this video matches with the order of the Trackify app. However, the app won't mark any of the waste on your in-game world map. Sometimes a piece of waste is miles away on a different part of the coast. The submarine is also very slow. If you collect everything in one run it will take about 2 hours. On the bright side, getting all this stuff will help you uncover the ocean map further and you will get a lot of money. $32,000 per piece of nuclear waste you find and a $250,000 bonus after finding the last one. Collection Services - what happens to your waste after collection
Recycling collection services vary across the country. The factors that influence these services include whether the area is urban or rural, the different types of housing and the facilities available to process your recycling.
Broadly there are three scheme types:
* ‘Kerbside sort’ schemes where recyclables are sorted into their respective materials on the lorry at the kerbside;
* ‘Two-stream’ where paper and card is collected in one compartment and the containers (cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles and jars) are collected in another compartment; and
* ‘Co-mingled’ collections where all your recyclables are put into one compartment on the lorry before being taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and sorted.

Garden Waste - how it is recycled
When garden waste is recycled it is transformed into nutrient rich soil conditioner. This can then be used in a range of different applications, such as for agriculture, for land reclamation and as an ingredient in some multipurpose composts you can buy at a garden centre.
Most types of garden waste can be recycled, including bark, flowers, grass and hedge cuttings, leaves, plants, small branches, twigs and weeds. If you are unable to compost at home, you can take it to your local garden waste recycling point or put it into your garden waste collection scheme, if you have one, where it will then be taken to a central composting facility to be processed. Check with your council to see if you can recycle garden waste locally!

Healthcology - Adapted tools
Healthcology is a global design project meant to facilitate medical waste management in hospitals. It has three main goals materialized by three concepts: improving the sorting of recyclable material (RVB concept), adapting waste collection equipment to the newly implemented cycle (Dess’ concept), and evolving medical tools (Scalp-L concept). More advanced than already existing products, these three devices complement each other.

Allied Waste Services of Corvallis - McNeilus Autoreach - Garbage Collection
Out in the middle of nowhere in the greater Corvallis, OR area we found this truck nearly done with route. Though it may be a very typical truck, I still found it very fun to watch and film. Between the belted grippers, the particular fashion in which he operated it, the beautiful scenery and the little surprise at the end, it sort of makes this truck stand out from the crowd, at least in my eyes. :D This four minute video was all I was able to manage before he was finished with his days routes. Huge thanks goes to a super friendly driver (as are all drivers we've met in these parts) And I hope you all enjoy the video.- published: 15 Mar 2014
