The Candy Shop Trailer
The Candy Shop is a thirty minute film that Whitestone will release in November. This film is being made for the Doorpost Film Project, and with support from 12Stone® Church and Street GRACE.
The film is a Fairytale/Parable about the child sex trafficking epidemic that has overrun our city of Atlanta. We are using the film to not only raise awareness but provoke meaningful action towards this issue taking place in our own backyard.
Approximately 500 children are trafficked for sex in Georgia every month, according to Street GRACE, an advocacy group whose mission is to stop the exploitation of children. Atlanta has one of the worst records for child sex trafficking in the United States and is considered one of the worst cities in the world for the sexual exploitation of minors.
This plague has gone on for too long, and now we at Whitestone, in cooperation with Doorpost, 12Stone® Church and Street GRACE want to put a stop to it.
This film represents the spearhead of a citywide and possibly a nationwide campaign.
It is not a documentary. It is not a PSA. It is the beginning of a movement.
We will have a special pre-screening event at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Free tickets will be available soon.
Please visit stopthecandyshop.com to find out what you can do to get involved.

Undressing the Truth
By Victoria Zade Castillo | Felix Varela Senior High School
Angie Varona, 17, had her Photobucket account hacked when she was 14, causing her world to turn upside down.
The image-hosting website held several inappropriate pictures, each one starring Varona in bikinis and lingerie wear. She never appeared naked.
“I had been notified by a close friend who had seen me in a porn site ad,” Varona said. “I spent the whole summer trying to take down all the pictures, but it was virtually impossible to track down who hacked me. I felt like crap knowing my life was going down the drain.”
After her schoolmates at John A. Ferguson Senior High found out, massive rumors spread like wildfire.
“I remember walking down the hallway, hearing people talk and watching people stare at me,” she said. “There were rumors that I was becoming a porn star.”
In reality, school was the least of her worries.
“I began getting real stalkers,” Varona said. “People from other states found out my address and took pictures of my house. They threatened to rape me.”
Three years later and now homeschooled, Varona is still coping.
“They’re not even getting my pictures from Photobucket anymore,” she said. “They’re getting them through my Facebooks. I can’t even have my real name. I’ve had like six Facebooks now.”
Her initial action of taking pictures for her boyfriend evolved into something she couldn’t imagine. Although her parents were supportive, they were disappointed at her for taking such sexual pictures and having them in the incapable hands of the Internet.
This popular trend of posting nude or sexual pictures has been practiced since cellphone cameras came on the scene.
“It’s everywhere, even where you least expect it – like on your teen’s computer, cellphone and game device,” Parry Aftab, a pioneering Internet law lawyer, said on her website.
“Forty-four percent of boys in coed high schools we polled reported seeing at least one image of a fellow female classmate in the nude,” said Aftab, who practices law in New Jersey. “Most saw images of more than just one girl. And many saw multiple images of each girl. Your daughter may be among them.”
A survey conducted by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy reveals that nearly one in five young people have sent nude pictures electronically or online.
“They’re posting these pictures trying to look older, cooler,” Aftab said. “They’re posing in their bras before they’re old enough to wear them. Now, when they’re passing the pictures from kid to kid afterwards, the kids that are passing them are being charged with child pornography.”
Because federal law doesn’t make any distinction about who creates the child porn, teens who take nude photos of themselves and child pornographers who abuse and exploit children can receive the same punishment.
That means that a child could spend up to five years in federal prison for simply possessing their own naked picture. Sending it out to others, however, can get a 15-year term.
Bryan Roussell, a detective in the Special Victims Unit of the Hollywood Police Department, has received many calls from parents who also don’t realize the consequences.
“[Parents] don’t understand that their daughter or their son is the one who started the crime by taking the picture of themselves and posting them on the Internet,” Roussell said.
“If a kid has a bunch of stored nude images [of minors] on his computer, he’ll be arrested for that and he’ll have to go through the judicial system like anybody else, whether he’s an adult or a child.”
Also, in many states, like Florida, if a person is convicted of a crime against children, it automatically registers him/her with the sex offender registry, a lifelong curse.
What really perturbs authorities and parents is why adolescents take these pictures. Therapist Ana M. Moreno, a licensed mental health counselor in Miami, believes self-esteem plays a role in these behaviors.
“The cases I have worked with that have engaged in this behavior are looking for outside validation. These teen girls feel that their sexuality makes them ‘popular’ and attracts attention,” Moreno said. “They may not feel good about their decision to share sexual pictures; however, if positive validation is received, they tend to feel content and sometimes elated with the feedback.”
Child pornography prosecutions skyrocketed in 2004, the same year as the creation of Facebook, creating a 650 percent increase from 1994.
“Those pictures are going to get out and you know how it is in school. Everyone will call these kids names. Now she becomes a ‘slut’ and she’s going to have to deal with that social issue,” Roussell said.
The trend is affecting people at all levels. Even celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudges have been caught in the act of “sexting” and sending nude photos to people in confide

Taking Over LA On Two Wheels
Riding fast is his thing. “Only talking about it makes me smile like a child,” says the 31year-old cycling Angeleno. Sean Martin started riding bikes more than ten years ago, first on a BMX. Now he feels “one” with his fixed-gear bike while riding through the streets of LA. A fixed-gear bicycle (fixie) is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning there is no time for coasting. The pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving. “That makes you feel one with your bike, you are in control, and if a car comes out of nowhere you have to be in control to bring you self into safety.”
Urban legend has it that the bike messengers in Manhattan were the first ones to take fixies out on the road. Low-maintenance and fast starts and stops were the draw for fast-passed messengers in the Big Apple. Fixed-gear cycling has now been popularized in a number of US cities. Beyond being popular, fixie riding has become a whole new sub-culture to witness in LA. From east side to west side, a wide variety of people can be found riding all different colors of fixie bikes on the streets of LA. This is an even more curious phenomenon given that LA is a city where automobile traffic rules the streets. Cyclists are very much in the minority and still must strive to earn their rightful spot in traffic on the streets. Cyclists routinely organize and form groups, throwing unofficial street races and riding together as a ‘critical mass’ to make their presence known.
Years ago when Sean moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, he had been used to joining several bike events per week. At that time, in LA, only the bike messengers would throw a race, and far less frequently. While Sean was on a training ride around Griffith Park, it hit him: “This route could be a race!” Sean’s first race was The Lord of Griffith, described by some people as the most epic fixed-gear climbing race in LA. Sean soon organized more races (including one called Stairway to Heaven), and started working with good friend Joseph Lobato on Take Over LA, a blog about bikes and other random sh*t we like. In 2010, Sean was featured in To Live And Ride in LA, a documentary about fixed-gear riders in Los Angeles.

The Face of Proposition 8
This footage was recorded 10/23/08 in Oakland, CA, on a public street corner near Lake Merritt.
I was on my way home from the Lakeshore district when I encountered this group of supporters of Prop 8. After turning my vidphone on, I was screamed at, physically intimidated and eventually attacked by one of the more aggressive sign-wavers.
Approx two dozen people were standing under the I-580, chanting "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" and "Mom and Dad, not Dad and Dad", etc. There were at least three counter-protesters present as well.
For several minutes prior to shooting this footage, I watched from a distance. One of the Prop 8 supporters lunged at a solitary man holding a "Vote No on Prop 8" sign. She didn't actually touch him, but she got right up in his face, screaming. She was loud enough that you could hear her several blocks away. As far as I could see, he hadn't provoked her in any way beyond the dissenting opinion stated on his sign. The man seemed to remain quiet and calm throughout. Witnessing this, I decided to turn on my phone's video application and approach.
Proponents of Prop 8 have gone to great lengths to try to deny the inherent fear, anger and bigotry fueling their camp's desire to ban gay marriage. However, these Prop 8 supporters (and many other protesters I've seen in recent weeks) were visibly enraged and screaming themselves hoarse in their righteous indignation over the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in the state of California.
Having documented this clash between fellow Oaklanders, I'm putting it online because I think it's important to convey to as many people as possible --supporters and dissenters alike--- just how irrational, hysterical and potentially dangerous the situation actually is. This is senseless bigotry of the saddest kind.
Something to keep in mind: when I hit the record button, I hadn't said a single word to anyone, or interfered with the rally in any way. I stood a fair distance from all of the sign-wavers (remaining at least four feet away from all of them... until they approached me). But as soon as they noticed me filming them, I was greeted with curses and threats of violence. "Get that shit out of here. I'll knock it out of your hand." None of these folks knew me, yet they instantly knew they hated me.
Eventually, as you can see, some of the protesters surrounded me and began poking at me with their signs. Others, some of the most visibly angry and hysterical among them (apparently minors), hid their faces behind their banners while continuing to scream at passing traffic.
I asked the most aggressive woman (who was not underage) "are you afraid to be online?" She answered, "oh, no, they already videotaped me, but these kids don't want to be online, cause they're [unintelligible] loaded on a sexual perv profile and [unclear] look at my little cousins." Fair enough. I'm all for protecting the innocent. (Not that there's anything particularly innocent about shouting hate speech in public.)
"Go away, Nasty-Nasty. Nasty, nasty, nasty, nasty."
The woman continued to poke at my face with her sign and call me "nasty." Disturbed by the complete lack of rational behavior I'd seen up to this point, wanting to look into her face and possibly connect on some level with her as a fellow human being, I pulled a corner of the sign down away from my eyes and asked "why are you calling me nasty?"
That's when she attacked, clawing, grabbing and then shoving. I didn't fight back; she was much bigger than me. Calling me a "nasty fucker" and threatening to kick my ass, she pried my phone out of my hand and tried to break it in half while her friends egged her on.
Please note that I never touched or threatened her in any way (unless you want to consider my pulling the edge of her sign out of eye-poking territory a threatening gesture).
As she grabbed at my phone, I stood there stunned, not really sure what to do. One of the counter-protesters (the woman who you see saying "No on Prop 8" towards the beginning of this clip) quickly intervened and calmed the attacking woman down enough that I felt safe enough to try to take my phone back. After a second or two of grappling, she let go and went back to screaming at cars from a lawn chair near the side of the road.
(Big love and gratitude to the kindly counter-protester who pleaded for calm. I don't think my phone would have survived without you!)
I stood there for another minute or two, checking the phone's applications for damage. One of the other sign-wavers, a teenage boy standing nearby, leaned over and whispered "fuck you, dyke."
Even though I wasn't hurt besides a small scratch on my hand, and my phone was okay, being attacked definitely shook me up. I was a bit tearful. Call me naive, but I never thought I'd actually be in physical danger just for shooting footage of their activity and pulling the edge of a person's sign out of my eyes. Verbal insults, sure. But attacked by an anti-gay ac
