Poisonous School Lunch Kills At least 22 in India
Poisonous School Lunch Kills At least 22 in India
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:10
  • Updated: 17 Jul 2013
At least 22 kids have died and more than 20 others are in hospital today after eating a poisonous school lunch in eastern India on Tuesday. The mass food poisoning sparked a protest, with residents in Bihar State taking to the streets and destroying police property to express their outrage at local officials negligence. This footage shows protesters smashing pots and furniture in the office building of the "Mid-day Meal Directorate" in Bihar. Here is more footage of police chasing protesters in Chhapra, the area where the school is located. The exact source of the poisoning is unknown but an initial investigation points to a phosphate that is commonly used in insecticides. The cook, who has also died from eating the food, had concerns about the cooking oil as well, which witnesses say smelled foul. There is also a question as to whether the poisoning was intentional or just a terrible, terrible mistake. The teachers and the administrators fled the building after seeing the children get sick. The government has offered the families 200,000 rupees in compensation, that's about $3,400, but the trust in government sponsored food programs will probably not recover so easily. Over 130 students were taken to the hospital last year after being served bread at school believed to have E Coli. You see, India struggles with child malnutrition and according to the International Food Policy Research Institute 43.5 % of Indian children are underweight. To change this, the government started a free lunch program in 2001 that covers about 120 million children under the age of 13. This not only combats child hunger but also gives parents an incentive to send their kids to school.

  • Updated: 06 Aug 2013
U.S. Sen. John McCain says this summer's ouster of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy was "a coup," a description that goes against the statements so far from the Obama administration. The White House has avoided using that term for the Egyptian military's ouster of Morsy. "We have said we share the democratic aspirations and criticism of the Morsy government that led millions of Egyptians into the streets ... . We've also said that the circumstances of (Morsy's) removal was a coup," McCain told reporters in Cairo on Tuesday. McCain also referred to the ouster as a "coup" in July, but he chose to reiterate that description on Egyptian soil at a time when the country is roiling with unrest and violence in the ouster's aftermath. He and Sen. Lindsey Graham, both Republicans, met with officials there to press for a quick return to civilian life. The senators were visiting the country for the first time since its president was removed from office. McCain said they were not in Egypt to dwell on the past but to help the country move forward in a peaceful, democratic manner. He and Graham also urged the government's release of political prisoners.
